I don't even think the OT should be necessary. I agree, if a thread degenerates it's easy to ignore the sub threads. But there is something pathetic about it, the way a person wants to say something in one thread and is not listened to, so then creates another thread in the hopes of, "Maybe they'll listen this time - if I change the title of the thread just a bit." I am a bit annoyed by multiple threads created by the same person - although I can live with it. But I am not at all annoyed at what happens with a single thread, or by how many times a person posts into that thread, especially if that person's comments are interesting enough to merit responses. I don't have a kill file, but if I did I don't think I'd use it anyway. Everyone has their own way. I think mine is polite enough. TJ |

If you post into that group and no one responds within a day you will come back and find your post two or three pages away from the first. I think some newsgroups are more naturally inclined toward broader topics. One was the comedy group I used to visit -now defunct. The obit group is also broad because it's theme is broad. Everybody dies. Now, not everybody cooks or cares to discuss eating, so this place is a bit more exclusive that the obit group, but it too is open to topics beyond just food, as it should be, otherwise it would cease to be an entertaining newsgroup. And let's face it, entertainment is key. Without being entertained I'm a dead man, TJ |

I think when they debate the issues, that is the sign that the discussion has ended. When a discussion turns into a debate it's time for the lies and venom and win at all costs bullshit to overtake reasoning and openness. __________________________________________ I disagree with your last sentence. I see nothing wrong with debate so long as it remains civil. Debate is importatn in all our western societies - one of the cornerstones of democracy yada yada.... I see no harm in anyone holding strong views and choosing to bebate them so long as the participants remain civil to each other. Once civility stops then that when all hell breaks loose and that's understanable - deliberate insults get the response they deserve IMO. Now, as for Somebody's post about venom in here, I believe he said that just to create a new thread, knowing his comments would get response - not much different from me when I was a kid and would respond to ads in the backs of magazines so the companies would send me mail just to make me feel like someone was communicating with me. ________________________________________ LOL. I think I did that too a couple of times when I was a kid. It's interesting that even today, kids get that same sort of thrill when they get real live mail with a stamp on it that is addressed to them and comes through the snail system. |

By '91 I was in charge of a multi-national, multi-system, mainframe operation centre for a mining software company. It was just prior to that (about '89), that the Army started to introduce computers to Bases around Oz. It was when I was at the large mainframe system that I got into this group, as well as the skydiving group. Back then, programmers thought that their shit didn't stink, and used to look down on us 'lowly operators'. I used to love the look on their faces when the programmers who'd ****ed me off would come running up to the operations room pleading with me to help find the program they'd been working on for a couple of weeks, that had 'disappeared'. If you want this group to turn around and concentrate on cooking, don't take all your cooking posts to FaceBook....post them here too. Once people start posting elsewhere, the ng is doomed. Gary |

I don't. (Actually, it's: pseudonym. I spelt it wrong too ![]() How do you know anyone's real name on Usenet? And so what if you do? Do you know somebody better if you know their "real life" name... I was born a doubting Thomas, and like Mulder trust no one. (As much as that is possible.) But on usenet it doesn't matter. Sometimes, I wonder what it would be like if everyone posted with the same name. Confusing, yes. But then there would be no baggage of the poster's: sex, race, nationality, history, religion, etc. Just words and ideas... and recipes. |

It means that the person has not only made such of ass of himself that he got KFed, but they know that people think they are asses and he can continue to find ways to make an ass of himself. It is truly pathetic. |

The problem is there's always new crop of posters who don't know a thing about netiquette. I'm as guilty as any for adding to some of the flames; I get frustrated. But "Somebody" posts so often about absolutely nothing to do with food or cooking, then has the nerve to complain about it. And morphs constantly. I still won't flee to FB. I don't like FB. Jill |
