Who would have thought that the WalMart in heavily Hispanic Harlingen,
TX would carry Gus' pickles. I just feasted on the half-sours of my childhood. I feel like I should have bought as many $5 jars (I know that's a lot for pickles)as would fit in my fridge, but I held back. The pickles were crisp and still somewhat green, exactly the way I love them. My mom would make shopping forays into NYC and the Lower East Side. Every trip would end with a gallon bottle of Gus' pickles. I remember going to the corner with her and getting the pickles straight out of the barrel. I'm thinking of saving all the pickle juice and getting some unwaxed cukes to put in the jar after I've eaten all the pickles. I am in pickle heaven! -- Janet Wilder Way-the-heck-south Texas Spelling doesn't count. Cooking does. |

Slightly related. I wandered into a store called "World Market" the other day and discovered that they still make Bosco. I'm fairly certain that I haven't seen Bosco in this area in thirty years or more. It's one of those stores where you could fill a gift basket with odds and ends that would leave recipients scratching their heads. I'm surprised that they didn't have monkey meat in a can that you used to be able to buy in Reno at the only delicatessen here in the sixties. There hasn't been a deli like it since around here. Unrefrigerated hanging meat of all sorts, an open hogshead of pickles, room temperature cheeses, an unforgettable aroma and the best sandwiches I ever ate, all from a small storefront. My memory must be boring to those of you who still experience that pleasure. It's gone from here. Yeah, Tony's Delicatessen, just up the street from the Mapes Hotel. I can't even imagine the delis that New York City, Chicago and Milwaukee had back then. leo |

We had a little paraphrase on it - something about "Mommy puts it in my milk to try to poison me." I think we were probably more loyal, tho, to Ovaltine in our house and Capt. Midnight's shakeup cup. I think Shledon says he still has his. |

Oh I love Bosco. That's the drink for me." We used 'Hershey Syrup' for malteds and ice cream but Nestle's Quick for chocolate milk. Now ask me where I put my car keys five minutes ago and I haven't a clue. Getting old is a bitch. -- Janet Wilder Way-the-heck-south Texas Spelling doesn't count. Cooking does. |

I need my keys to stay out because the door from the garage to my basement is locked as is the door from the stairwell into the main part of the house. My keys rarely go missing though because I'm pretty good about putting them away after that. When we had multiple cars, I had a key rack next to the upstairs door so they'd go there as soon as I got home. The television remote is another story. Hubby and I have different preferred spots for it and god only knows what happens to it when kids (of all ages) come over. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

Whenever I turn off my vehical my keys are removed and stay in my hand until they go into my pocket (if away from home) or when at home they go directly into my desk drawer. |
