I don't get misty about much, anymore. Been around too long and seen
too much. But, being a hopeless romantic, Christmas gets me all sappy. I even choke up near the tail end of Alastair Sim's Christmas Carol. Another holiday delight is old Christmas carols, specially those sung by the Dirt Nap Boys. You know, Perry, Andy, Dean, etc. One peculiar tradition around here is by one of our local radio stations, the one which caters to the youngsters, playing the latest Gomez and Beiber bubble gum, year round. In a perverse kick the kids to the curb dirty trick, they totally switch directions and drag out all these old geezer Christmas standards every Dec 25th. I love it! Tonight I heard a new one and it blew my socks off. What Child Is This by Carrie Underwood! Greensleeves has been a fave ever since I was old enough to realize The Teddy Bears Picnic rocks out, so I was astonished, having never heard this variation of the traditional Eng folk classic. Took me a few hits n' misses online to discover the working title and who sang it, but finally found it on youtube. It's now my new favoritest Christmas carol of all time. What's yours? nb |

Came out around 1959 and a boyfriend liked to imitate the singer ( Bobbe Vee, or something) and he was almost as bad. Brings back bad mems when it's played, which is way too often. I don't mind Burl Ives tho and "Have a Holly Jolly Xmas". I just like his voice. |

Bah! I am exposed to almost zero commercials. I only listen to public radio, watch pretty much no TV, except very rarely, PBS. The few TV shows I watch are time-shifted by a year, and on DVD w/o commercials. Back when I still did watch some TV, I was somewhat offended that Baba O'Reilly was being used as a theme song to one of the shows I watched, but after seeing Townsend and Daltrey make complete asses of themselves at a Super Bowl halftime show (again, on TV), I lost all reverence I still had for those guys. I guess they gotta eat. I'd never whore out anyone's sacred music to Mammon. The stupid reindeer and Frosty crap, that's OK, since no one past the age of 6 or 7 believes that's actually true anyway. I know that The Messiah is really more of an Easter thing, but here in St. Louis, they tend to perform it around Christmas, and I got to heaer it in its entirety twice on the radio, and once live. Anyway, on Christmas Eve, the church hired a woman with her two sheep to come to the 5:00PM service, and stick around to let the children pet the sheep, and I got that part from the Handel stuck in my head, "All we like sheep! have gone astray-ay-ay-ay-ay. All we like sheep!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3YYsKO6YAA > > Janet US --Bryan |

The whole Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy thing seems wrong to me, like institutionalized lying to kids. St. Nicholas was reputed to be an orphan with a large inheritance who chose the life of a priest, who renounced worldly wealth and was reputed to give his money away anonymously to children. To tell children that we are inspired by this guy's actions, and so we give children presents to commemorate that is nice. To tell them that there is a guy who lives at the North Pole, is seemingly immortal, and who defies the laws of physics seems really bullshit. > --Bryan |

The Little Drummer Boy is my all-time favorite. I remember playing that
RECORD, on my parent's stereo, when I came home from school, before anyone else was home yet. One of my great regrets is that I didn't get around to visiting Branson, Missouri before Andy Williams was gone. I grew up watching his specials on TV. And I always play the Dean Martin slot machine at the casino :-) The only modern Christmas song I like is Adam Sandler-makes me laugh every time I hear it. Ya Ya I know, so shoot me, I was gone. |
