OT(?) Have A Natural Remedy For A Cough?
As luck would have it, I came down with a cold on Christmas Day, along with a pesty cough, especially when I lay down, and keeps me from being able to sleep. I've never had good results with over-the-counter cough meds, and most have warnings on them, if a person has high blood pressure, etc. so would rather not take anything like that. My mother use to make something up when I was a kid, and seems to me one ingredient was honey, and seems like maybe she used lemon juice too, but I can't be certain, but I know there are natural mixtures that alleviate a "ticklish" throat, so does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any advice, including the proportions. There is nothing worse than trying to suppress a cough, but seems like when I get started, it will just keep aggravating me! Appreciate anything you can pass on to me....thanks! Judy |

Everyone had some good suggestions here, but I like yours the best of all, I think. I wouldn't like TOO much bourbon in it , even though it would probably make me sleep better! :) I'm quite sure my mother did use the honey and lemon juice, but when I was a kid, I know she wouldn't have added an booze, or at least I don't think so?! Thanks a bunch to all who had some good suggestions! Judy |

The only thing that works to get rid of a tickly cough for me is Vicks
Vapo Rub. Perhaps we can consider it a bit natural as it does contain menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor oils as the active ingredients. Generously butter up your neck, shoulders, chest, and the tops and bottoms of your feet. Put on some heavy socks. Feel better! Tara |

Already complained to Usenet-news) I'd recommend getting to the doctor and get a real cough syrup. My flu from more than a week before Christmas turned into bronchitis and so I'm still under the weather. Feel better soon! I can so relate to the coughing feeling worse when trying to lay down and sleep. |

Prevention is the cure... Mom almost died couple yrs ago picking up a
bad virus. I insist now she carry a couple zinc lozenges in her purse. I told her when she is at the store if someone who looks or sounds sick so much as looks at her she should pop one of these in her mouth. Same thing at church, concerts, shows, etc. Cold-Eze Sugar Free Zinc Lozenges-they are whitish clearish hard candies with a black cherry flavor. I work with a smoker and young mothers who are from slobbery kissy kissy large families and they bring a virus to work every year couple times a yr. I keep these lozenges year round in my desk drawer. Just one is enough to stop my own subtle onset of symptoms dead in its tracks-but you have to notice that first subtle symptom and instantly pop one. Otherwise, the lozenges will help with the severity of the virus symptoms but not kill it. They are not pleasant candies-all food and drink will taste terrible while the zinc coating is still in your mouth. I think they also increase the coughing if you take it too late. For coughing I drink brandy, and I nuke chicken broth put it in a deep mug and cover the top of the mug with my face and breathe/inhale the steam. In addition, we keep a pack of antiseptic wipes in the car, and wipe off our hands AFTER leaving stores like Walmart. |

It keeps my throat moving and it keeps drops from building up near the top of my throat which for me seems to trigger the majority of the coughs I ever have. Sorry but chewing gum when in bed doesn't seem a great idea. Chewing gum does not help when I have an unproductive (dry) cough. I rarely get that type of cough. Then a steamer seems to work best. I don't even put VapoRub of other chemicals in it just water for steam. A lot of folks report good results with prescription codeine or non-prescription tussin. Never helped me much and I've given up asking for them or buying them. |
