In another thread, people mentioned "yellow cheese" and
"white cheese", which is incomprehensible to me, Brit living in Switzerland, so I checked the internet and found this enlightening explanation on Wikipedia: QUOTE: "American cheese is a processed cheese. It is orange, yellow, or white in color and mild in flavor, with a medium-firm consistency, and melts easily. American cheese was originally only white, but is sometimes now modified to yellow. In the past, it was made from a blend of cheeses, most often Colby and Cheddar. Today’s American cheese is generally no longer made from blended cheeses, but instead is manufactured from a set of ingredients[1] such as milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, and salt. In the United States,[2] it may not be legally sold as "cheese", and must be labeled as "processed cheese", "cheese product", or similar—e.g., "cheese food"." UNQUOTE Yuck. The cheesaholic in me is glad to be living in Switzerland and near France. Melanie |

Oh, no - not that stuff. They can't even legally call it cheese, can they? I thought it says cheese "food" or something like that. As a kid, I knew there was something wrong with that stuff as soon as my mother started buying it because it tasted nothing like the real American cheese slices. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I first tasted their once excellent cheese when it was still available only in big wheels, back in the early 70s. Later, I lived about 50 miles from their plant in OR. Now, they are no better than any other US mega cheese. Kraft Cracker Barrel is better. So sad. nb |

If I worked there, aside from being depressed as a result of doing the same repetitive work for hours on end day after day, I'd probably get beat up by my co-workers for saying "who cut the cheese???" repeatedly for hours on end day after day. |

Thanks! I think the only place here that sells that brand of cheese is Dollar Tree and I think it's only the cheddar. |

I tried Kroger brand one time and didn't like it at all. It had a strange aftertaste. |

If I buy Kraft first and like it, I'll look for LoL. If I find LoL first and don't like it, I won't bother looking for Kraft. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

But as an adult I've always preferred cheese, any cheese at all, to American cheese-textured dairy constructs. A girlfriend worked in a gringo Mexican restaurant where they had two cheeses: White and yellow. They threw goo-gobs of it, shredded, on everything and anything. It was called "UniqueLoaf". At that time the package read "An authentic synthetic cheese for use in ethnic dishes." That's right: authentic synthetic. After 30 years they must have gotten some push-back. I note from googling that it now says: "A non-dairy homogenized protein and vegetable oil loaf used as a garnish in the preparation of pizzas, sandwiches, spreads, sauces and other foods." I don't know what American cheese is by type or style. But I can put almost any kind of high qualiy firm melting cheese on a burger. I particularly like fontina or gruyere. |
