Default prettiest antique cast iron waffle maker on eBay

After spending too much time looking
at this thing, I'm going to try not
to bid on it.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281053230338

It's just the kind of thing I like.
Antique cast iron, just the right era,
food related, a nice mechanical action.
It'll probably go for a high price.

I'll probably use the same reasoning that
got me to stop looking at Toast-O-Lators.
I don't make toast, and a Toast-O-Lator
is not the best way to make toast. It's
an interesting machine, but functionally
it's inferior to a modern toaster.

Likewise, I don't make waffles. I haven't
eaten a waffle since I was a kid. They're
just carriers for butter and syrup, which
I also don't eat.

Unlike Griswold and Wagner waffle irons
from the same era, this waffle maker doesn't
flip to provide even cooking on both sides.
I like the lever action to raise the lid,
but that doesn't compensate for being
inferior to a design that flips. I like
the all-cast-iron contruction (unlike
Griswold and Wagner which are partly sheet
metal), but again that doesn't compensate for
not having the best functional performance.

I'll just have to sigh and let it go.

It is really interesting looking. If it doesn't flip how does a
waffle get brown on the top?

Sure looks like it does to me-- It looks like it is designed to sit
over the hole where you've removed a lid-- then it swivels on those
nubs yo see clearly in the he first picture.

Don't know why the seller didn't show it 'flipped'.

The lever is the flipper-- In the photo where it is open you can see
that the level is on the hinged side.

Here you go-

With a little luck someone could find this sitting in grandma's attic
(heh) or at a thrift shop. I'm not sure I care enough about waffles to
look for a waffle iron. It is pretty, though.

Another one has shown up!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221180301592

It's in the flipped position, so you're right.
I guess they're not that rare, though I have
known rare items to sometimes show up at the
same time, seemingly without any coordination
on the part of the sellers.

Now, I only have to keep remembering I don't
eat waffles.
