The pastor demands that a party of 18 get separate checks to avoid an
auto-tip, stiffs her waitress, then gets the waitress fired. Praise Jesus! http://tinyurl.com/armhtt5 -- -- Beware the delicate, tiny, very talented celebrity starlets. |

The waitress should have immediately consulted the manager when asked for 18 separate checks. Something was definitely amiss. Of course, this auto-tip business does rub some people the wrong way. I wouldn't have fired her tho, unless this was one more infraction, added to a long list of poor performance.

The waitress was not the one fired. The employee that posted the receipt with the pastor's notes was fired. |

I like to segregate my anonymities when possible. It's not always possible. I don't know if you pursued the Alois Bell story far enough, but there is a video of her preaching that is worth the pursuit: Absolutely incomprehensible. |

The auto tip on large parties does sort of irritate, but most every place that has it will post it so you know up front. And there is good reason for the auto tip too. You can always leave. The truth is, the pastor is a turd and Applebees should take some action because it is a violation of policy by posting a customer name. OTOH, I'd probably give the girl a bonus. |

Like at Chevy's, it was this little micro print at the very bottom of the menu, that actually hadda be pointed out by the mgr. Why can't there be a nice large notice that says, "Any folks that eat in a group like pigs at the trough WILL be charged extra cuz yer all cheap bastids"? I could live with that. ![]() See my other thread. nb |

This is one of the reasons that I disapprove of the institution of tipping. It leaves wait staff dependent upon the generosity of customers for their wages, which they should get from their employer. Then they come along with rules like the 18% "tip" for groups, which IMO is excessive. If they are really concerned about the staff getting paid for the service they provide they could put up a No Tipping policy sign and notice on the menu and jack their prices up to include the tip. That being said, I appreciate the hassles waiting on a large party. My father in law used to host a birthday. family Christmas party at a club he belonged to. The club had a family brunch buffet with entertainment. the Big Niece monopolized the waiter. He had come around with coffee. She wanted tea. There was cream at the table but she wanted milk, which she waited to tell him about when he got back with the tea. SO me went for a pitcher of milk. When he got back with the pitcher of milk for her tea she sent him for a glass of milk. He got back with the glass of milk and she asked for a glass of orange juice. He never came back. He disappeared, and I don't blame him. |

Auto tip is to guarantee her at least a minimum tip for so much extra work. Remember....they get paid very little per hour and count on tips to compensate for that. Gary |

But at what level do you set the prices to include the tip? And do the servers who work so hard actually see any of that in their paycheck? I'm not adverse to tipping because I have worked in restaurants. But it also depends on the level of service. > That being said, I appreciate the hassles waiting on a large party. That's the sort of behavior that makes you want to run off. LOL Except it wasn't Big Niece. It was everyone at the table at this one large party. Running me into the ground, constantly sending me back to the kitchen for this and that. (That was before they even got their meals.) I basically got a quarter tip from each of them. A couple of women left me fifty cents. As long as lower wages and the tip system are in place in the US, this is why the automatic gratuity for large parties makes sense. Jill |

What I would suggest for the Big Niece is telling her off so thoroughly that you significantly increase the chance that she'll commit suicide. --Bryan |

That makes life interesting, but I saw it handled with *extreme* grace a few years ago in *the* Italian restaurant in Malone, NY. [if there are 2 now- it is the one with the neon lobster over the door] My son's youth hockey team was in town for the weekend. The coach called ahead and asked if they could accommodate 8 boys and 15-16 adults. They asked for an hour lead time so they could 'open a room'. When we got there, the boys were sat at one table- the adults at the table nearby in a dining area set aside for us. While we were munching on bread and looking over the menu, the adults figured we'd get a check for each table- add them together and divide the bill. Nope-- The waitress came in and started taking the boy's orders, asking each one what his jersey number was. then she went to our table, called out the number,, and added the adults to each bill. Genius! The service was unbelievably good- the food was fantastic- the tips were generous- and we all fell in love with Malone. [a tiny city near the Canadian border in NY] Jim |

I was in a restaurant once and I saw a party leave, then one guy returned, dug around through the change on the table, pulled out his wallet and through some money down. He spied me sitting idly watching and said, "50 cents on a 20 dollar tab! My Dad is living in 1930!" and moved on. It was at that point that I began checking my folks tips. |
