Default Olive oil fraud

Yesterday, I picked up a liter of Mastro 100% pure cold pressed.
$4.97. I hope it's what the label says it is.

{
Last July, Eddie Zilli, president of Santa Maria Foods of Toronto,
which markets Mastro olive oil and other products, was convicted of
three offences under the Food and Drugs Act.

The judge ordered Zilli to pay a total fine of $150,000 and ordered
47,400 litres of seized oil to be disposed of.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported that Zilli
unlawfully imported oil labeled as extra-virgin olive oil that was, in
fact, blended oil containing approximately 50 per cent sunflower oil.
The offences occurred between January and April 2006.

damn it. I've been buying that brand because it's been cheaper for
tha past few months.

Cooking with it still has been fine as I rarely use olive oil unless
heat is getting applied...

Mastro has been convicted in the past. I just hope they learned from
their waywardness and now sell what they advertise.

what I was implying was I rarely use the Mastro oil for things like
salad dressings or as a flavouring ingredient on cold foods etc...

Once in a while I used to make a week's worth of Chicken Paprikash.
One chick breast for each day. By the end of the week, the last piece
to be warmed up, it was past well done. Also, ceviche comes to mind.

More likely they'll change their name and
go back to business as usual. Olive oil
is among the most commonly adulterated
foods, mostly because it's hard to detect.
I haven't bought foreign olive oil in ages.
I assume all imported olive oils are
adulterated. That might not be true, but
you won't go too far wrong with that
assumption.

We use the Kroger brand light olive oil for pan frying. Does good up to and including..chicken fried steak..chicken..okry..tates etc. Also got some XXX virgin cold pressed first squeezing for more glamorous occasions. Heating up the good stuff is not a good plan. It will make your whole crib smell like a burnt olive. Also remember..the only oil Eyetalians get is what the Greek's refuse to eat. Use Greek when you want the best. Now it was a Greek fella who splained this so he might be prejudiced. I dont think he was fibbing.

I read somewhere that the exam of the polyphenlos is a very good way to
detect fake EVO oil, but it is not cheap

The good news is that sunflower oil in Europe is nearly all of the high oleic variety, so health-wise, while you may have been missing the benefits of the polyphenols, at least the fats were fine. It's a shame to throw away all of that totally healthful blended oil. They should instead donate it to food pantries.
