Which shows how long it has been between sloppy joes for me. I only
bought the can because I didn't see packets and just assumed I'd find
packets somewhere else. Unfortunately, I can't even find a mention of
a packet on the internet now. I know I preferred the packet over the
can and I preferred Manwich brand over Hunt's in a packet. Well, the
packet of dried doesn't seem to exist anymore and I can't stand that
crud in a can. Unfortunately, I've never made sloppy joes from
scratch that I liked either - so I guess Sloppy Joes will not have a
snowball's chance in hell of being served at my house again.

I don't think it's overpriced. Only less than a dollar for a 15.5oz can
that you add to a pound of cooked ground beef and onions. That's a pretty
cheap and easy meal, imo.

It's a uniquely seasoned can of tomato sauce, Ophelia. If you ever try it,
try the original first....that's what made it famous. Oh and it's not knife
and fork. You put this on a fresh roll and eat with 2 hands.

That's where you went wrong, Jill. You don't cook your meat in the sauce.
You cook it first with onions and drain off any excess grease, then combine
it with the can of sauce.

Thanks, Gary. I doubt I could find it here. I was just curious.

It is very rarely on sale for $1 here, and never for a penny less. I think the regular price is somewhere around $2 a can.

As you know, the finest cooks in the world work for the U.S. Navy. Navy cooks
achieve greatness by simply opening the right cans in the right order.

Do you have a Food Lion grocery store out there on the left-coast?
If so, try their cheap (59c) store brand of hotdog chili (no meat). It's
very good. I've actually eaten leftovers in a bowl just as a bowl of chili.

You don't run across a gem like this often.

That's way too much. I shop early every Saturday morning. I'll look to see
what the regular price is here. And maybe even buy a can...it's been a long
time.

I can't find it there.

My BH&G cookbook is from ~1972, and the recipe is in the canning and
preserving section.

This recipe is pretty much exactly the same:
http://www.recipegoldmine.com/canveg/chili-sauce.html

My mother used to make this every year, and now so do I.

DUH! That's a given, Gary. Brown the meat, drain it, then simmer it in
the sauce and serve on hamburger buns. It's still awful.

Pay no attention, Ophelia. If you ever run across a can, give it a try and
decide for yourself.

It's stayed in business for many many years, so a LOT of people evidently
like it well enough. It's just a matter of preference as most foods are.

Mine is so close it must have started there. That one says it
makes 6 pints. Mine uses 17 pounds tomatoes instead of 14- uses a
single bunch of celery [4 cups, chopped] and adjusts the spices
slightly.

And my notes say 6 *quarts*.<g>

Quarts- pints- it is *good* stuff.

To carry things further-- once you make the chili sauce, make some
Michigan [or Coney Island] hot Dog Sauce
Quick Michigan Sauce
1 medium onion chopped
1 diced green pepper
2 tbls butter]
1lb hamburger
1 ½ cups homemade chili sauce
1 tsp cumin
1 tbl chili powder
1 tbl salt
2 tbls Franks Red Hot sauce

Saute onion and peppers in butter until soft-
Add hamburger and cook until brown
Add rest of ingredients and simmer for an hour or two until it firms
up a little.

To serve- use soft hotdog buns- lay in some chopped raw onions- a good
hot dog- and 1/2 cup sauce. In northern NY it is called a Michigan-
in the south it would be a Coney Island. [at least it is how I
remember Coney Island dogs tasting 50 years ago]

And that's the weird thing. It's sooo expensive! And you can make the dish
from scratch for cheap. Then again people seem to like Hamburger Helper
too. I don't get that either.

It is here in Edmonds, but I don't know why. They have today and tomorrow
off. Still on in Bothell but they get a mid winter break soon.

Also it seems that more and more kids are being home schooled or online
schooled these days. My friend's grandson had trouble in school and was
pretty much kicked out of every school in his district. So he was forced to
do the online schooling but they had no computer. So the mom sent him to
the library. And what did he do on the computer there? Pretty much
everything but school.

Oh, no, no no. I don't like burgers too much to begin with and that sloppy
sauce smells and looks so awful. There is no way I would put that in my
mouth. If I do eat a burger, it has to be plain. Used to be that I
couldn't eat them with cheese. Then when I couldn't have cheese, I got used
to them like that. Then I started eating cheese again and found that I
disliked them with cheese at all.

Now if I had to eat a burger with a bun, I suppose I would. But if I have
to eat a burger at all, I prefer just the meat patty on a plate topped with
lettuce, tomato and onion. I have never ever liked any condiments on the
burger.

Some people claim Stagg is the best, so that's what I bought for the
pregame chili dogs. Hubby put the flavor into words: it tastes like
the can. Hopefully, it cured him of wanting canned chili again.

I have only ever heard that Stagg is the worst! My parents swear by Nalley
but it has TVP in it. Not sure how long they have been doing that for. I
buy Hormel once in a while. But more often I buy the Albertsons brand. I
did buy a can of Western Family but haven't tried it. My all time favorite
was Hytop but they quit making it.

No idea where that hearsay came from. The only "people" I've seen
proclaim one canned chili brand superior to another is here in rfc.

Online reviews and in talking to other people about canned chili. My friend

You can't get the Albertsons brand? I thought you had Albertsons there. At
