Default King Cake

Sorry, I can't hear you, I'm busy eating my Haydel's king cake. I don't
care if Mardi Gras was last week. This is something special. If only
McKenzie's Bakery was still around!

What's so special about it? Looks like an ordinary fruit bun with icing.
And the price???!!!

It's not suppose to have fruit in it. It's simply a cinnamon coffee
cake iced with white icing, sprinkled with yellow, green, and purple
sugars, and decorated with Mardi Gras decorations.

I like the praline (pecan caramel) filling, and sometimes a syrup-y praline
sauce on the side.

There's also different ways of cooking it. Some people brown it, so it's
like a cinnamon bun. Some people don't brown it much at all, so it's more
cakey.

The icing and colored sugars make it fun.

I can't believe we went this year without one King Cake. We were away
for a while and he Boss has been sick the past week. Not that we have a
lot of choices here in East Texas.... the best we usually find is an
average commercial version at the local grocery.

Never mind. Crawfish season is upon us and I'll have my first taste of
this year's crop this weekend.

I checked Haydel's website.
$52.00 for a King Cake?! I saw them at the grocery store for less
than $8.00 during Mardi Gras weekend. Their other items are just as
overpriced.

The extra cost is for the plastic baby and beads that come with it.
Normally a coffee cake that size costs around $4.00 at Kroger.
They're even less if you happen to be there when they mark them down.

I can see a killing to be made here...... run of the mill cakes with
those expensive added extras of beads and plastic baubles.

It's like taking land off the Indians!!

I'd pay $52 for these cup cakes:

You forgot the recipe for praline sauce.

And I can tell you Peter it's no fun if your caramel sauce boils over.
Caramel sauce can boil over in a matter of seconds.

I'm not crazy about colored icing. I use regular icing and sprinkle colored
sugar on top.

I covered my king cake with foil this year, so it didn't brown much. It came
out cakey and delicious. I also used praline filling, and made a syrupy
praline sauce (no cream, not much butter).

Some people put a coffee can in the middle of the king cake (without the
plastic lid) and cover it with a damp cloth. Maybe I'll try that next year.
But I'm concerned that the paint on the coffee can might not be nonreactive.
