I was eating a grapefruit this morning, which had just the right balance
of sweet and sour and it occurred to me that such pink grapefruits are my favorite fruit. They beat out my next favorites: properly ripe seedless grapes and yellow kiwi fruit. I wonder what are other people's favorite fruits? -- Jim Silverton (Potomac, MD) Extraneous "not" in Reply To. |

I liked grapefruit a lot. However, I'm no longer allowed to eat it due to medication concerns. So, being diabetic leaves me with limited fruit choices. I will eat a Macintosh apple once in a while. My main fruit items are berries. With blueberries topping the list when they're not too expensive. I usually purchase blackberries. |

The patient had not been drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice "due to her nausea." No, she was drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice because she likes grapefruit juice, and it was on the breakfast buffet at the Best Western in Grants, New Mexico, and the one in Gallup, where we had stayed on vacation. We took the Amtrak back, and that evening, my wife--the "42-year-old female"--almost died. Dr. Pillai was her nephrologist at St. Mary's Hospital. I like berries. All kinds of berries. But the best fruit I ever ate was in Tahiti. The fresh pineapple they served there every day was unbelievable. I've never had sweeter, more ripe and juicy pineapple before or since. Once in a rare while when the "golden" pineapples are really ripe looking I'll get one....but nothing has ever measured up. |

Can't say I have one favorite, but I'm partial to cherries and berries. You mentioned grapes, but they can vary considerably depending or the time of year and where they are from. One batch is great, the next now as much. Citrus is great in season. I bought a couple of boxes of oranges through www.localharvest.org and the connection to the Orange Store. I've never found anything as sweet and juicy as what they shipped. In fact, we had grapefruit juice this morning that I squeezed from their ruby red. The oranges from them are so loaded with juice they have to be peeled over the sink. Almost like holding a water balloon except filled with OJ. Things like local strawberries, peaches are may favorite for the short time they are at the peak locally. |

Driving across northern Minnesota one year ?August? we came upon a
pick-your-own strawberry field. It was a large commercial farm. I have never before or since had such strawberries-washed and eaten fresh-it would have been criminal to add sugar to make goop. Most people in their life will never have that taste experience with grocery store strawberries. ps don't google big ag strawberries or you will never enjoy another strawberry again unless it came from your own personal garden. I like fruit raw best without any added ingredients. I like raspberries fresh from the bush. Don't really care for apples unless they have been turned into chocolate pecan caramel tart green apples :-) Hate grapefruit. I like white saturn peaches but don't like yellow round peaches-hate peach based desserts. I like unripe plums. I hate oranges. I like hard pears not ripe. I like green bananas don't like ripe. I like those holiday globe grapes but dont care for green grapes. I like raw or dried cherries but hate cherry pie etc. Prefer honeydew to cantalope. Love fresh pineapple. I hate fruit juices of any kind. I basically rarely eat fruit compared to other people. Something that always stuck with me is what someone said about God's plan--if humans were meant to eat fruit daily from all parts of the world then all fruits would grow everywhere. Fruit is a treat not a staple imo. |

It's hard to beat a fresh, ripe Georgia peach. But what's better than
icy cold watermelon in the summer? This Christmas, I had a box of tangelos from an FFA fund raiser that were amazing, so juicy and sweet. Tara |

I used to love grapefruit, but my system reacts badly to citrus and grapefruit us the worst for me. I also used to like oranges, even though the oranges we get here are third rate compared to what people get in areas where they are grown. The fruits I eat the most would be: strawberries blueberries mango pineapple pears grapes kiwis melon |

Hmm... would have to be blueberries, raspberries, cherries and avocados. Seems unfair to exclude things like bananas, apples, pears, quinces and citrus, but then my favourites would be a long list. Blackberries are out in force here at the moment, so that's what fruit I'm eating mostly ATM. |

I fully agree with you, Jebus. I love whatever is in season, ripe and in front of me ATM. I like some better than others based only on ease of eating. For instance I want my peaches sliced and my grapefruit fully prepared, which means I have to do it. OTOH, blueberries are a rinse off and eat by the handful proposition for me. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I enjoy the occasional watermelon but it's not a favorite, I much prefer cantaloupe, honeydew, crenshaw and the like. That said I just bought a packet of watermelon seeds to try this year as an experiment... got a packet of cantaloupe too, hoping for more of these as an omen of things to come... imagine if I can grow watermelons like these, I'll be convert: http://i45.tinypic.com/rll2qx.jpg |

This year I am going to attempt growing my own watermelons, and cantaloupes. I grew cantaloups last year and now I am spoiled, no store bought compares to home grown cantaloupe. I will probably never buy a cantaloupe again. I am going to look for honeydew seeds too. The comparison to vine ripened cantaloupe to store bought is the same as with tomatoes. |

Since cranberries are so seasonal, I don't eat them often. I do have some dried ones. I also like rhubarb but I am unsure as to whether that is a fruit or a vegetable. The problem with grapefruit though is that it isn't always good. Costco used to sell it in cups and it was tasty. What they sell now is not. It's just bitter. |

I have lived in a cherry growing area long enough to learn that cherries are best eaten within hours of picking, and within a couple days they start to deteriorate drastically. I rarely buy imported cherries because they are so disappointing. I pity those who aren't close enough to fresh sour cherries to be able to make pies and other baked items with nice fresh cherries. I miss the small orchard that was across the street when he first moved here. It was tended just enough to get a crop but I rarely saw them harvesting. We had the tradition of the annual stolen cherry pie. I would get hme from work, make some pie dough, run across the street to get enough cherries to make a pie, pit, add some sugar minit tapioca and then into the oven it went. Fresh sour cherry pie. It was the best pie of the year. |

BTW.... we use a lot of sour cherry juice that we get in concentrated form from a local cherry farm. It is supposed to do wonderful things for arthritis and to have many other health benefits. A few years ago my wife had to go off all medication for a few months, including her arthritis meds. Drinking cherry juice kept he arthritis under control. |
