I got the expected lame answer when I emailed Publix to ask why corned
beef seems to cost so much less in *other* (non-Publix) stores around the country: "The cost of corned beef has risen significantly in the last few years due to a number of variables. These increases in the beef market have been driven by the reduced supply of live cattle and rising cost of corn/feed. In addition, the ever increasing cost of fuel has affected overall expenses associated with production/distribution. Our current ad retail is a result of this increased supplier cost. The regular retail of our Murphy/David corned beef is $4.99 lb., so the current ad price represents a savings of $1.10 lb." So all these other stores around the country have a magic source which make it cost less in other places? Yeah, right. More likely it's because they get it from this one particular supplier. It will be interesting to see if the price goes down a little more *after* today, but I'm not holding my breath. Jill |

Anyhoo, got 4 flat cuts, 5 plus pounds each for 50 bucks. |

As much as I enjoy shopping at Publix, their prices are significantly
higher, even with all the competition in our area. Around here, you can shop at Publix, Kroger, Ingles, Aldi, Walmart, Target, and a few international groceries. Publix prices are still higher. I don't shop there very often, although I do prefer their produce and bakery. I love the recipe kiosk where you can sample the recipe of the week and pick up all the needed ingredients in one spot. Isn't that sort of where the War of Northern Aggression go started? |

I shop there usually every week, but I only buy their buy one get one free items, and if I need anything from their bakery (the Publix bakery is second to none among supermarket chains) I will pick it up, and if I'm in a mood for a sub (their subs are outstanding; I suggest you go with the Boar's Head) I will pick one up. The Publix here in Greenville just started carrying Graeter's Ice Cream, so if I want that, I have to go here. But I doubt I have ever spent more than 20 dollars on a single visit to Publix; I just load all the items into my knapsack when I leave the store and walk across the street to Bi-Lo where their prices are much cheaper, and I get everything else there. |

With the mention of blue and grey it sounds like he's trying to turn this into a Civil War/political thread. Jill |

If you use their promotional coupons and such, they are as cheap as anyone else except Wal-Mart. (I know this to be fact, from very inside sources.) Their edge is gained from the quality of their in-house products, broad selection, and atmosphere. -- Larry |

To me "old South" connotes antebellum, civil war and reconstruction days. I'm not that old. ![]() area is old, to be sure. It has nothing to do with the price of corned beef at Publix. Jill |

If only you had the honor that the Major General had in HMS Pinafo Describing his duty to those whose estate he had recently bought: " GEN. Frederic, in this chapel are ancestors: you cannot deny that. With the estate, I bought the chapel and its contents. I don't know whose ancestors they were, but I know whose ancestors they are, and I shudder to think that their descendant by purchase (if I may so describe myself) should have brought disgrace upon what, I have no doubt, was an unstained escutcheon. Should I consider myself to be of Spanish "heritage" simply because I live here? Nope. It is a really nice area, though. ![]() Jill |
