Default Nut prices.

Maybe I've just been spoiled. I loved my health food store. Not only did
they have the freshest popcorn and nuts but the best prices! I'd been
buying sprouted walnuts. They do cost a bit more but I like them for eating
as is. But the health food store as it was, is no more. The owner has moved
it to her house but I've yet to get out there. I don't think she is selling
much in the way of food and mostly has supplements. I do take supplements
but rarely bought those from her.

Anyway... I recently bought walnuts at two different stores and were
shocked at the prices. These were neither organic nor sprouted and one was
a store brand. And they cost a lot more than I'd been paying at my health
food store.

So... Have nut prices gone way up recently? Or was I just a lucky duck in
getting cheap prices at the health food store?

I pay $7.98 per pound for shelled walnuts. I think that's pricey, but
I don't eat many. A few per day. I purchase them from a health food
store, but they're not labeled as being organic.

Trader Joe's has good prices on the nuts I buy - cheaper than Whole
Foods and I think they're better tasting, too.

Beats me. Nut prices are always astronomical but I find Trader Joe's
has the best prices and their nuts are fresh. Don't bother to tell me
your personal horror story about stale nuts at Joe's, because it
simply hasn't happened in my experience and I've bought nuts there for
years.

I agree with you. TJ's has really good nuts, a good selection, and never
stale IME.

You don't say how much you paid.
I can get a three pound bag of almonds at Costco for $12.99. About a
year ago or so, the same bag was $9.99. I don't remember how much the
walnuts or pecans cost - but I do believe the price is better than the
regular supermarket, which can be around $7 per pound.

One would suggest the farmers market (I get them for $3-5/lb and often
less), but Julie who lives in the land of abundance just can't find one

Unless you specify actual prices your post is as totally useless as
you are.

That is about what I paid. Perhaps a tad more.

I will look there. But I have a feeling they are done on shared lines.

I have not ever found stale food at TJ's. But my issue with them is that so
much of their food is processed on shared lines.

That's a good price! Costco has a good price on nuts but theirs are on a
shared line too so I can't eat them.

It was just over $8 for 4 cups. The Costco nuts are done on shared lines so
I can't eat them.

The last walnuts were just over $8. Maybe $8.38? Was an odd price. For
four cups. These were pieces. Not halves.

AS a farmer for almost 25 years, I can tell you prices have gone up.
Fertilizer rises with the price of oil/gas and everything else. Just
a fact of farming.

I don't know exactly except that they use the same equipment or something
like that for other things. In the case of nuts, it is highly likely that
they will use this for other nuts. So unless you are buying nuts grown and
processed by a dedicated place for only that kind of nuts, there will be
cross contamination. I do accept this and take my chances there. But a
person with a specific nut allergy could not. However, in the case of
Trader Joe's and Costco, it says shared lines with dairy, eggs and other
things. The dairy and eggs are a problem for me.

Some people would say that they are just putting this on there as a CYA type
thing but... We have had problems with shared lines things so I just won't
buy them, provided that whatever they share those lines with are problematic
for us.

If you do not have a nut allergy, what is the problem?
Of course, if one of you doesn't have an "intolerance", you will
develop one soon.

I have an intolerance to almonds and macadamias plus OAS to almonds and
pistachios. So far buying nuts that could be cross contaminated by other
nuts has not given me a problem. It has for my daughter though. Peanuts
give her a weird sort of seeping nose bleed. It's not full on blood but
like a watery discharge with blood in it. I myself have been having the
same problem lately but don't know what to trace it to.

We figured this out after she was first diagnosed. Dr. told me to buy
cashews for her instead of peanuts. I didn't know enough then to check the
label. Had I done so, I would have realized that they were roasted in
peanut oil! Then she asked for some sort of food (can't remember what it
was now) that said it "may contain" peanuts. Not long after eating what it
was, she got the nosebleed. She tried it two more times. Same thing.

Dairy and eggs make me very ill. Not an allergy. An intolerance. But even
a trace amount of the offending food will make me ill. I once picked a
stray shred of cheese out of a salad in a restaurant. Continued to eat it.
Got sick as soon as I got home. So now I am uber careful to avoid these
things.

I usually get nuts at TJ's or at Costco. TJ's is a good source
for almond flour (meal) too.
