Default Do you have a favorite bowl

One that you use all the time or for special occassions or just for
decoration?

The New York Times wants to see. Here's an interactive feature and
there are some
really gorgeous bowls there already. Send your picture.

Post them. They are looking for the unusual. Some of the captions
are interesting too.

I don't have anything like those beauties but I just acquired a set of 4
handmade salad bowls made by my dad many years ago. My mom gave them to
me because she was cleaning our her kitchen for a remodel, and she has
so many other things he's made. He was quite a woodworker in his day.
He even used to make acoustic guitars with the most perfect tone. I had
one, but my ex-husband got it somehow when we split up and it got smashed.

BAH! Those are just decorative bowls! Not one of them is filled with
food.

While beautiful, those aren't kitchenware. They're purely decorative
art glass and pottery. You might be able to put a few pieces of fruit
in some of them but "use" them? For what?

I have a few nice, expensive bowls from a local artist. I'll admit, that
they are for show mostly but I have made a point to use them sometimes on
special occasions. It's like owning fine china and never using it. Why
have it if you don't use it?

One bowl sits on my dining room table (for show) but I always have it filled
with something....usually whole walnuts.

I also bought an artists coffee cup and saucer from an art store one year.
That was my christmas present to me. It's also a display thing but I do use
it every Christmas morning for coffee.

I think you missed the whole point of the article and interactive.
It is about art, and craft.
Nobody said the bowls had to be used for food although many are if you
read the captions.

I didn't go though it very carefully. I thought the reason it was
posted was they were supposed to hold food and that's why I went
there. None I saw were shown with food, all looked like some pot
throwers idea of art and I thought everything I saw was butt ugly, so
I had no incentive to read about them or look any more thoroughly.

I suppose some people confuse form and function. When one is talking
about a bowl it is not big stretch to assume they are referring to a
function piece of kitchenware. IMO, a bowl is something that should be
used.... for something, rather than just an objet d'art. To make a bowl
that really can't be used as a bowl is IMO, silly. There are some
beautiful bowls around that are useful as bowls. The others are just props.

They can be art, just as a sculpture can be. No more silly as art
than those stupid canvasses that Rembrandt painted on. Now they don't
even make a good tent.

There are plenty of artsy fartsy bowls used for food, they are just
not touted as mixing bowls. I have several very fancy bowls that I
use for serving candy, nuts, etc.
