She is obviously brain injured, but nothing for the VA to worry about.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Julie has professed several times that her
husband is militarily employed.

I saw a sound bite on TV recently about the VA's inefficiency. Seems that
compared to 5 years ago, they're way, way, WAY slower in processing claims --
something like 50 times slower. E.g. if they used to need 3 mos. to process
one bennies claim, now they need 150 mos. The White House blames Congress and
Congress blames the White House.

And he had a forced retirement in Sept. and they have still not given him
the VA portion of his retirement, which is disability!

Well yeah! They said they are working on it. Keep sending us paperwork
stating as such. The VA is all backed up. There is a website tracking
this.

http://cironline.org/reports/map-whe...log-worst-3792

His is out of the Oakland CA office which you can see is one of the worst
ones.

He has his retirement. It's the disability portion of the pay that he
doesn't have.

Yes, despite getting four new expensive computer systems. But one of those
didn't go to CA, one of the highest hit areas with people making claims.

Jumping in here to support Julie! In their teenage years, my daughter's
best friend was a navy brat. One Sunday she hurt her arm and thought it
was broken. Since the navy doctors were not available that day, her mom
refused to take her to some civilian medical place. She waited until the
next day to take her to the Navy doctors.

Pretty cheesy, IMO. If my daughter was hurt and i thought she needed
immediate medical treatment, I wouldn't have worried about the cost.

There are different medical plans you can choose. One is an HMO. If you
choose that plan you are limited to where they allow you to go. One of my
neighbors in NY chose this plan because her family was rarely sick. Then
something happened to a family member and she dialed 911. She didn't stop
to think that it might not be covered. It wasn't. There was a hospital
(had filed bankruptcy) that was on her plan but it had no ambulances. So
she just dialed 911. They had to pay thousands of dollars OOP.

I do not have that plan. I have what I think is the best plan for us. We
can see any Dr. or specialist, usually with no referral, provided they take
our insurance. But it is not free to us until/unless we meet the
catastrophic cap which since my husband is now retired is $3,000 per family
and not $1,000 like it used to be.

If a military facility were available to us, not only would it have limited
days and hours but more limited still for dependants. Yes, it would be
free. No, it probably would not have specialists for us. Might have
specialists but dependants might not be allowed to see them. And they have
a limited formulary. Prescriptions would be free but they might not have
what we need.

It is sad that people go without medical care because they can't pay or
don't want to. But I know that it happens.

Especially since the cost is nothing outrageous as far as health
insurance goes. Tricare, depending on the plan chosen, has an annual
family deductible of $100-$600. Patient cost for most care is 15%-20%
of the negotiated fee for the service after the annual deductible is
met. In other words, it's pretty much a run of the mill health
insurance plan in terms of costs.
Sure, there's an annual out of pocket cap of $3000, but that's just
the _maximum_ amount a family would have to pay out of pocket in any
year. That does not mean it would cost $3K to see a doctor.

Correct. As insurance plans go, in some ways it is very good for the
patient but not so good for others. For instance, many Drs. won't take it.
And it's pretty bad for the Drs. because they don't pay them much at all.
Same for prescriptions. One of mine was about $2,000, but they only paid
the pharmacy $80. For that reason some pharmacies won't take it either.
And it's bad if you have to make a cross country move and need medical
before the active duty person has checked in. Then you have to pay the full
amount OOP and wait to get reimbursed after the active duty person checks in
to the new duty station. For one move that meant that we had to pay about
$6,000 and wait to be reimbursed. It's not as like one has $6,000 just
lying around when one is making a move. Granted, the military in higher
ranks certainly doesn't get bad pay but we're also not rich!

I will mention this to him. Not sure where they are in NY. And his
computer is apparently not working. I don't want to get into all of the
details here. They have processed part of it and he has the letter stating
that he is disabled, but they are still working on one part that could mean
another 10% disability. And I think that's the hold up. I'm just kind of
like... Give him the amount that you told us and if he will get more later,
then add that to it!

The sequestrations haven't helped with anything government related, I
suppose that relays to military too. So if they didn't get it through
before the sequestration, it will likely take a lot more time. Sad.

Luckily that hasn't affected us yet but I live in fear that it might. I
think he is quitting this job in a couple of weeks and heading back here for
the new one. When he *was* in the military we also had a couple of scares
where they didn't know when they might pay us. Luckily that never happened
either.

We are also trying to refinance our house through the VA and that process is
not only slow as molasses in January but has a lot more to it than the
normal refinance. I think (but am not sure about this) that somehow by
going this route it will save us money over a conventional refinance. At
least I hope so. We have to not only have a termite inspection but a total
inspection of the whole house. Which is partly why I have been so busy
lately. Trying to fix up as much as I can myself and then hiring a handyman
to do all of the other known problems, save for the roof.

Except for the slowness, it sounds like what you'd do for any other
refi. They're practically giving money away (it's almost free) to
people with good credit, so that's your only obstacle if you go with a
conventional refi.

Really? I didn't know that they had all of those inspections. It's too
late to change anything now. We've already paid the fee.

Is he retired or is he in the military? She makes it sound like he's
living on the other side of the country because of being in the
military. If he's retired they didn't *station* him across the country.
She makes it sound like he was transferred. Now it sounds like he
accepted a civilian job and chooses to live there.

If he's not receiving his disability pay (as l not -l pointed out) there
are steps which can be taken and organizations that will help. But
someone has to pick up the phone and get things moving.

Why do you think you are an expert on their lives?

She (so far as I remember) stated that he was out of the military and his
disability payment was being held up. He has taken any work he could to
support his family. She also said that work where she lived was scarce and
now he has the opportunity to get work locally, he is pursuing that. Far
from deliberately working as far away as possible from his family as you
stated, he is trying to get back!!! Perhaps you ought to stop dreaming up
scenarios ?

Doh, doh, doh! I have said repeatedly... He retired in Sept. From the
MILITARY! When he was in the military, he had said he would retire here
then went ahead and signed up one more time. They extended him here for one
more year but beyond that they could not. He was transferred back to CA and
had we gone, we would have had to live in the same inferior housing in
Alameda where we had lived before. We were not willing to do this again.
The Drs. in that area were no good and there was no appropriate dance
school. Plus there is the matter of us owning this house and it likely not
selling. Not in a timely fashion anyway. My not wanting to pull my
daughter from a good school system to one that I thought was not good. And
my elderly parents. We moved to the East Coast specifically to take care of
my MIL. She is safely in a nursing home and she is not alone. Plenty of
relatives around. Not so for my parents. And they need help now.

He did not *choose* to live in NY. He wants a specific job in the Coast
Guard as a civilian. There was no opening here. There was in NY and in two
other places. He was accepted in NY. So he went there. And now he has
found a job here. Not the one that he wants, but it will involve travel to
NY and also TX. But at least his home base will be here and he will be able
to see his relatives in PA sometimes since that is a mere 2 hours or so from
NY.

Well, then I guess he will have to do that. There's not a thing I can do
there. And I'm sure that *you're* not an expert on it either. Do you think
they can help the other thousands plus people who are waiting? Some who
have been waiting for over 2 years? Because that *is* the situation!

Thank you! I'll hire you if I ever decide to have someone write a movie on
my life story. I'm sure it would be totally riveting to some of the folks
here.

Okay, you're posting so much on every thread and clearly getting the attention you crave. 10% of the posts now are replies to you about what a ****wit you are. Consider me out of the game. I encourage everyone else to ignore you as well.

No it wouldn't. She'd leave out the good parts.
