Default The Food of a Younger Land -- book

I am enjoying The Food of a Younger Land, by Mark Kurlansky. I checked
it out of the library, but I think I will buy myself a copy, as this
makes a great night table book. Kurlanksy has compiled articles from the
WPA "America Eats" projects, which documented food traditions across the
country.

The book is divided into sections by region. Each section has many
related articles.:

The Northeast Eats

The South Eats

The Middle West Eats

The Southwest Eats

Thank you, Tara. I'll see if I can find a copy for my kitchen counter. I do
love to read. My night table book is my bible and then prayer including
some here. . . even if just for their anger management. Polly

I really, really liked this book. After you finish it, try
looking at America Cooks by The Browns and American Regional
Cookery by Sheila Hibben. These vintage books are truly regional
in scope and are, I think, a nice segue after you realize what has
been lost as our food has become more homogeneous. Also, Nelson
Algren's America Eats (was that the only completed part of the
project?) has been published. It is really sad that so much of
the material was lost and that the project ended as the authors
turned their pens to the war effort.

Pat Willard wrote a book based on the same archives, but it is
fairly redundant, and I liked Kurlansky's book much more.

Oh, there is another book that resulted from all of that work:
Pigsfoot Jelly & Persimmon Beer: Foodways from the Virginia
Writers' Project by Charles L. Perdue. That's another good 'un IMO.
