He was a machine gunner on the Soviet front. He was captured and did
8 years in the Soviet Gulag shit holes that Stalin invented; not only for the POW's, but for his own people as well. And I **** on youse who think my Pappy was a war criminal. He just shot em' full of holes, and filled them full of lead which is what he was supposed to do. My aunt, she could tell you stories about what the filth did to Hanover. They threw down White Phosphorus, and incinerated babies, women, old men. The deaths were horrible. Many of those who had WP rained on them jumped into the lake in the middle of Hanover. When they went under, the WP was extinguished. When they resurfaced, the shit started to burn again. **** you filth that rejoices in this garbage bombardment. I **** on you, and the likes of David Smith. |

You guys were not on our side until more than two years later. Hitler and Stalin had a mutual non aggression pact that allowed Germany to invade Poland, despite British threats to fight for Poland. After Hitler thought he had the UK under control he violated that treaty with the Soviets and invaded them. The US did not get involved until 6 months after that, and only after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and Hitler declared war on the them. The Soviets where never much of an ally. It was more a matter of having a mutual enemy. |

I wish we'd stayed out of subsequent non-wars, but by that time we were the world's policeman. Like many Americans, I would be just fine with us going back to being an isolationist country. > > The Soviets where never much of an ally. It was more a matter of having > a mutual enemy. I honestly do not care how you want to frame it, the fact remains they did not side with Germany. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

Strictly speaking, your dad was in a GUPVI (Glavnoe upravlenie po delam voennoplennykh i internirovannykh NKVD-MVD SSSR ), basically a series of labor camps for both POWs and internees, the object being to work foreigners to death. Forced labor provided 10% of the Soviet Union's output during the Fifth Five Year Plan. Czech partisans captured my mom's uncle on his way home after the armistice, and he spent the next three years of his life at Camp 40 in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan. He was a likable guy, so they did not actually work him to death. |

Like this one now. lol It seems like we're suddenly in the middle of a flame war, but I don't remember the first shots being fired here. I'm just curious where it got started and wonder why it bled over here. I know Moose came as a troll, but he stayed and played nice. In fact, I've enjoyed reading (most of) his posts to rfc. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I **** on you, and the likes of David Smith. Things must be boring in fantasy land and whining about what happens to you after you start a war is pretty rich. By the by, since either you were not listening or your family stories are also fantasies, Hanover was not captured or attacked by the Soviet army. It was taken on the April 10 by the U.S. 84th infantry and subsequently was a part of the British zone of occupation. It was thoroughly bombed by both British and American air forces as it was a major center for war production. Estimates of civilian casualties are around 6,000. Oh, and "plonk". |
