Default Got a date tonight?

If you should ever find yourself traveling along I-8 between Yuma and
Casa Grande, Arizona (a pretty desolate stretch), stop here for a
break and load up on some really fine Medjool dates:

http://www.dateland.com

You will undoubtedly buy more than you will consume as snacks, so when
you get around to wondering what to do with all the leftovers, make
this:

To ... die ... for.

I see that no one followed up on this when I used "Got a date
tonight?" as the subject line.

Can't imagine why. :-0 :-) :-)

Now, I still have plenty of dates and wonder what other good things I
can make with them. Help?

I would be hard pressed to think of anything better to do with them
than to make date squares. In fact, I am in the middle of making a batch
right now. I cooked up the dates for the filling and while they were
cooking I mixed up the ingredients for the crust <?> and melted the
butter. Actually, I use half butter and half Becel and try to convince
myself it is healthier. I turned the oven on and by the time it is
heated up the filling should be cooled off enough.

The bakery in town sells serving size date squares for $1.50 and the
corner bakery sell huge pieces for $2.95. I figure there are maybe 8 of
her squares to a batch and it costs me no more than that to make an
entire batch. The only problem is that I have that whole batch to eat
up and there are few things more fattening than dates squares.

Do you ever make those bacon wrapped date appetizers? They're tasty
and it's up to you to stuff them or not.

I went to a Mediterranean food blog and entered "dates" in the search
box.
http://www.dedemed.com/search?format...258&y=-123

Also the California Dates promotion site has a lot of recipes - many
of them are savory.
http://www.datesaregreat.com/recipes...y/?category=13

The Epicurious site also has various date recipes (including the one
you posted)

Yum, I love dates. Thanks for the link. You can also stir chopped dates
into a cooked frosting until they melt. It tastes so good.

No. My exposure to dates was limited to my wife's relatives' dry-ish
boxed dates stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter, rolled in
powdered sugar, as an addendum to Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.
As a result, I never developed much of an interest in them. Decent
Medjool dates were a revelation.

Bacon-wrapped or other savory versions don't automagically appeal to
me, but I'm open-minded - I'll eat just about anything at least
once. :-)

Good pointer. I find that most food product promotional sites are
good. I mean, if they're smart, they'll put up recipes that actually
highlight their product(s) and taste good [1] rather than any old
thing that happens to include it, right? (But I wonder at things like
"Date Beef Wellingtons." :-) )

When we went to the Palm Springs area, we stopped at the Shields Date
Garden in Indio and watched the Sexy Date movie:

Over towards the outlet mall/casino is Hadley Orchards, which is more

Someone at school brings in dates, each stuffed with a pecan and wrapped
in bacon. They are wonderful -- sweet, salty, smoky, chewy, sticky, and
crunchy.

I mean to try date milkshakes one of these days.

I stumbled across a chicken and date recipe this morning that looks
good to me (obviously, I'm not attracted to sweets)
http://www.edamam.com/recipe/chicken...3621cc58/dates

If you don't like the looks of the chicken recipe, then there is a
recipe for chocolate filled dates in the right hand column (not
something that appeals to me, but you might like it)

Date milkshake? I think you have just invented Ben & Jerry's next ice

This date bar recipe was handed down to me by my father. He called
them Princess Squares.

http://hizzoners.com/index.php/recip...ares-date-bars

I love dates. Love them in flax bread, love them in trail mix, love
them just eaten out of hand.

Can not thank you enough for sharing your recipes with us. Here is a
recipe for cake frosting that contains dates, it came from my great
grandmother, but it does not have a name. It is delish, tastes great on
a spice cake.

2 c sugar
1 c milk
1 c chopped pecans
1 c coconut
1/4 c butter
1 c dates, chopped

In a saucepan mix all the ingredients, except the dates. Bring to boil
and simmer until it thickens enough to be spreadable. If you cook it too
long it will be hard like candy, so be careful not to cook too long.
When done, add the chopped dates, mashing them with the back of your
wooden spoon while stirring them in.

Coconut what? If it's coconut flour, I have it. Bought it when I
thought my DIL was gluten intolerant. She had a blood test after one
year of doing the elimination diet and it turned out it that yeast was
what made her feel so bad.

Sorry, it is grated coconut. This recipe was in my great grandmother's
handwriting, and food was different then. The recipe called for "sweet
milk", which I changed to "milk". I forgot about the coconut.

Thanks, Becca.... I'd have to buy grated coconut, or could I just put
some shredded coconut into a blender/food processor and give it a
whirl?

That was another mistake, I should have said shredded coconut. I will
get this right, eventually.
