I am always on the lookout for interesting foods to take backcountry
camping. I bought a can of these last summer, didn't use them then, brought them out for lunch today: http://www.sunhingfoods.com/bytype.php?flwrsardinemoroc4-38oz|Seafood=Next+%E2%80%BA%E2%80%BA Not your usual canned sardines in plain oil / tomato sauce / mustard sauce. A nice balance of spicy piri-piri pepper and clove flavors. Now I just need to remember where I bought them :-) The point and/or question being: other interestingly flavored canned seafood I might want to look for? -- Silvar Beitel |

You must like sardines.... probably more than I do. Try any new types that you see. No point in telling you about interesting variations unless they are available to you. |

And canned Danish bacon? (I think that is a brand.). Not exactly seafood, though. N. |

Thanks, Dave. I doubt that I would have figured that out by myself > No point in telling you about > interesting variations unless they are available to you. No, no, no! Please tell me about all the interesting variations that are not available to me. -- Silvar Beitel |

Delicious in various preparations. A bit difficult to take camping. -- Silvar Beitel |

I was looking for expansions on the idea of "interestingly flavored canned seafood" although I'm quite happy to get responses like yours about good shelf- stable stuff (for interesting backcountry camping eating) in general. -- Silvar Beitel |

How 'interesting' do you want? Have you tried cockles? or King topshell? Jim |

Yes. King topshell? No. That's new to me. Had to look it up. But, sure, I'd eat that. Thanks for the reference. "Interestingly flavored" (rather than "interesting, as in odd") canned seafood was the gist of my original question. No doubt some overlap in the answers that fit both. -- Silvar Beitel |

That's interesting "Prepared from calamari" --- I was expecting Topshell-- I got mine in the Asian supermarket and still haven't gotten around to preparing it. I've never eaten abalone & all the recipes I see compare the topshell to abalone. Are abalone and calamari close in texture and taste? That might get me to open that can a little sooner- Jim |
