I have been using Firefox as my default browser for years. Lately it has
been acting up. I don't know if anyone else is having similar problems.
Maybe it is because I have had dozens of updates and updates add-ons.
For the last few weeks it started freezing up if unattended for extended
periods. The it started freezing up more frequently. By today it was
just crapping out completely every time I tried to do something.

So... I uninstalled it.. after importing the bookmarks to IE. Then I
rebooted and used IE to find and download and install Firefox. Once
installed I tried it out. It works great. It even has all my old book marks.

Flash has been acting up.

That's true. It was happening with Flash as well.
But.... uninstalling and then downloading and installing seems to have
fixed the problem.... for now.

I have a love-hate relationship with Firefox. When it first came out,
it was great. I think the problem with it these days is that it tries
to do too many things and please everyone, which has made it quite
bloated and less stable than it once was.

Mine seems fine on the main machine, but might have been updated a couple
years ago. Last time I updated XP was, maybe last year.

One of my FB friends has been having a similar problem with. My
problem was too many open tabs (which was remedied when I joined
Pinterest). I'll let her know what you did, thanks.

I have to close "Runtime error 217 at 00B900B" every morning or else
Chrome won't boot up. The message just says Error, not what is
causing it. Firefox occasionally gives me the Flash error message,
but it's not as regular as the Chrome error message... whatever that
one is all about.

I never had problems with either Firefox or Chrome until I got a new
machine with Win7.

I don't do it manually. They are set to update automatically and
constantly. Chrome is v28.0.1500.63 and FF is v22. Neither problem
is new. I reformatted my computer after a year in an attempt to get
rid of the problems, but they came back as soon as I reinstalled FF
and Chrome. It's not me, it's them.

I get that.

In some ways we all seem to be drawn back to Microsoft's IE.

I wonder who made that the default browser curve...

I'm not drawn to IE and don't use it. However, IE is a Microsoft
product. It's their OS, their browser and they get to set the
rules... but it's possible to make another browser the default and
that's what I do.

For a time I was rather taken with Opera, but it began experiencing more
errors on certain web sites and I moved on.

Firefox is enjoyable, but not for .pdf files.

And so it goes. Wish I'd taken the Apple plunge.

I have zero problems opening a .pdf from the internet because I
installed Adobe Reader - and that was that. If you don't want to
install a free Adobe product, you could try this (which I haven't
used) http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/

When you sign up, you are required to use either a Twitter or Facebook
account to do it. I didn't want to link it to FB, so I created a
Twitter account for the explicit purpose of joining Pinterest. To my
great relief, I was able to delink them immediately. I delinked them
through "settings" as soon as I opened the Pinterest account and have
experienced no problems in the two years since. I use Pinterest for
my own personal interests and am not trying to be "social" with it. I
Pin a lot - god forbid I should be posting every single pin to my FB
timeline/news feed or tweet them automatically. Gaaak!

I've alternated with both plugins, still getting odd results.

I may need to reinstall cleanly.

Best thing you can do is go search for prior versions of Flash and
download it.

Then remove Flash from the browser add-on's. Install the older version
and voila, Flash issue solved.

The new updates of Flash are MAJOR CPU pigs.

Thank you, T. I know I didn't have any problem with it until I
switched to Win7 two years ago, so I know there's a conflict. What
would switching to an older version do for me? It seems like I'd have
more trouble accessing web sites using an older version of Flash would
be far worse than the annoyance of saying okay to an error message on
start up once a day.

Maybe, but I have a huge hard drive and lots of memory - so I don't
see it very often. I mainly hear my hard drive kick into gear, but I
don't get a notification from windows explorer telling me which
program is hogging and my computer doesn't slow down.

Aren't the new phones the pits?

I got a new Panasonic. It's a freakin' career field. The manual is
96 pages long. I does everything but what I'd like it to do, which is
record the call and provide a headset jack. So, I jes bought another
phone, a Plantronics cordless headphone phone ....bone! For when I'm
on the phone with some online support or another, I can touch type
hands free. I think I got more investing phone than my actual
computer.

Nodnodnod!!! We were quite happy with our old phones until the kids decided
we needed to get up to date with smart phones I am starting to get used
to it now ... for the first couple of weeks I was ready to sling it in the
bin ... but now I am seeing it does have its charms, not least the shopping
list thingy (thank you Sheila) and the to do list

Wow that sounds like some deal! Can you use it away from your computer
though?

Oh yes. It's a little pod about the size of a beeper and it's a
cordless phone, so you can walk anywhere within range of the base,
even outdoors. The pod goes to a headset so one is hands free. I can
even cook or wash dishes while chatting on phone. It's not new. I
had a couple models jes like this new one for several years. I wore
'em out.

You can get 'em as cheap as $70USD for refurbs.

Yes, it does. I don't care for something over the top of my head with
like a headband.

We used something similar to this at work (this is the "home version",
ha!) for many years:

http://www.plantronics.com/us/product/mx500i

It was handy at the office walking from one department to another. I
don't really need something like this at home. I simply walk into the
next room and pick up the phone. Or not.

Gadgets are getting too small and complicated/fiddly to use for me...

I must be getting old - even though I used to work in IT, I can't be
bothered using the Interweb on anything other than a full sized PC and
as for anything portable, I only want a phone I can make calls on,
send a text and maybe take a photo occasionally.

It would be nice if they developed a more stripped down, faster,
leaner, meaner, alternative version of FF.

I have something like that for my cordless landline phone but it also
does bluetooth. I can walk outside over to my neighbors house and still
get a connection. The problem is that some people I've been talking to,
mainly at work, complain that they can't hear me. I can hear them fine
so I'm not sure what that's about. I'm starting to have the same
problem with my home cordless phone on speakerphone when on conference
calls. I sort of think it's the phone that initiated the call on the
other end that has the problem, the one in a conference room where
people are listening on its speaker. If everyone is on individual phones
no one complains they can't hear me.

I work in IT and I'm starting to feel the same way. I don't even want to
fix someone elses computer anymore. I think it's called "burn out".

Yep, I'm so over the whole industry... I have better things to do
these days.

Where I live those devices aren't the greatest. Lots of radio sources to
screw with things like that. And if you're using bluetooth you need to
have the source very close to the device you're using else no dice. It
changes if you're indoors to almost 30 feet though.
