Default OT one cat back home!

I woke early and had the feeling to check the raccoon traps. Heard Jazzy as
soon as I opened the door. She couldn't have been in there too long because
husband always checks them before he leaves for work. She had some stickers
in her fur, is missing fur on part of her face and a bad looking injury on
her tail. Can't get her into the vet until tomorrow and don't really feel
that this is a case for an emergency vet as the tail wound isn't fresh. She
seems very happy to be home! Sadly I suspect that Bali is dead. Although
neither cat is a real fighter...they did fight some but as in perhaps
learning and not to do damage... Jazzy is strong and powerful and was very
overprotective of her daughter. I just can't see Bali fighting very hard
and I suspect she is up there with Maui now. But happy to get one cat
back!

Great! I hope you will also find Bali, but I'm glad you do have one of
them. I would like to recommend, again, that you call and *keep calling*
any animal shelters in your area. It isn't enough to check once. I have
had friends who failed to check and learned later that their pets were
eventually turned in to the animal shelter. In some cases, the news was
good; but there were also cases where the cat or dog was put to sleep
because it had been at the shelter past the time for it to be held. An
owner could find that their pet was not at the shelter--but it could be
turned in a month later. Even if you leave a description and a request for
staff to call you, they are often so busy that the call does not get made
(probably because no one recognized the "stray" from the owner's
description).

Oh I am so pleased you have her. Let us hope your luck holds out and you
get Bali home!

Congratulations and sorry to hear of the potential loss.

Don't give up hope, but try and keep Jazzy in for a bit maybe.

There are only two animal shelters and they do not take calls. The one is
so far away, nobody who lives in this area would be likely to go there.
They are for unincorporated Snohomish county and that is where we live but
that covers a wide span of cities.

The other is closer and is more likely where someone would take her but...
Unless she is gotten in a trap, it's unlikely that anyone would be able to
get her. Because Jazzy stuck so close to home and because she is not
calling out for her now as she would always do if Bali were in some odd spot
of the house or getting too close to the garage door or something, it leads
me to believe that she knows that her daughter is gone. I will go out and
change the pics I have posted though to have just Bali on them.

Thanks! Jazzy is catching up on some much needed sleep now.

They are both indoor cats. Had something not pulled her through the window
she would never have gone out there. And you can tell that she is terrified
of the outside now. She looks frightened every time she looks out the
window. Mr. Handyman is coming on Tues. to put something over the windows
to prevent this from happening again. Said it won't look good but I don't
care. I just want my babies to be safe. And I sure don't want that raccoon
getting in here. I have not checked the wildlife cams yet today but that
raccoon was spotted trying to get in here.

The animal shelter, where I volunteered, charges $75 to get your cat out
of "jail", plus $22 per day, so I would visit the animal shelter fairly
often to see if your cat is there. Wishing you luck.

Yes, I'd forgotten about the window incident.

That's traumatizing.

I mounted a platform bird feeder to the window frame for ours to enjoy,
but magpies made him bah like a new lamb.

Keep those traps out, btw, racoons love bird seed, in case you feed...

It's not like that here at all. They don't charge anything. But I really
think she is no longer with us.

They also like kibble, but they will eat just about anything.

Julie has said on several occasions she doesn't feed birds because of
rats. But yes, raccoons will eat just about anything. I can't keep a
hanging bird feeder because raccoons keep tearing them down. I had a
lovely terra cotta feeder that hung by triple chains. They were joined
at the top on a S- hook. They knocked it down and stole the chains!
Who knows what raccoons would want with chains. But they stole them.

I'm glad Jazzy is back home. Julie said both her cats are chipped. You
and I have read about cats that were found *years* later. Sometimes
they manage to wander farther away than people expect them to. They
climb into a car or truck and get driven hundreds of miles away. Heck,
sometimes they even hop on a boat and get transported to another
country. It happens quite often.

I'd keep checking with the shelters and vets. And make sure you have
pictures. She's also said she doesn't take pictures. But really, I
don't know anyone who doesn't have at least one picture of their pet(s).

I watched a show last called 'Infested', or something like that.

It detailed one family and the house they rented. It was infested with
Raccoons in the ceiling, it was incredible what damage they caused,
including sending the mother to hospital with a lung infection
normally only found in cavers. There was 'sludge' running down the
walls... which turned out to be liquid racoon feces. I had no idea how
bad raccoons could be... they make our possums here look like little
angels.

Amazed also at the complete lack of help they received from *anyone*
at all, other than a health inspector - but even that only happened
after repeated requests. He fell though the ceiling because it was all
rotten.

Even though they were paying rent, they got no help from the landlord
whatsoever and apparently legally were not entitled to any help. They
had to abandon the place and lose their deposit (or whatever its
called there).

Yeah - we tell ppl to check the shelter website daily and for weeks on end. Not all surrenders happen within the first days. Also check the various adoption groups in the area, plus neighboring counties and city shelters.

Best thing is to have that pet chipped, and, that done, still take precautions against their getting out.

Wow - our shelter is ten per night. If an animal is there for just a partial day, it's a freebie, we are so glad to reunite owner and pet.

Yes! I watch that show in horror. I felt particularly bad for the low
income woman who got a kitten as a present for her son then got rid of it
thinking he was allergic. No. Bedbugs! I can't remember who it was that
finally did help them but they wound up getting rid of pretty much
everything they owned!

I found that it is particularly hard here to get help with raccoons.
Apparently you need a special license.

I had not had time to check the wildlife cams until just now. Nothing came
onto my deck so that's good but there is also no more food or water there.
But the one by the back fence? Lots of activity there. Quite a few cats,
including Jazzy. Thought at first that one might be Bali but the way she
showed in the pic was so tiny. Had to e-mail it to myself and blow it up.
Wasn't her but was a skinny tabby. Also got one pic of the small raccoon
which I think is the one we trapped.

Spoke to one of the workers next door and he said they had to stop their
outside work because of the huge raccoon. He said that it came right up to
them, making horrible noises. They were frightened and went inside.

Still pretty sure that she is long gone. Nobody has seen her and there were
no pics of her on the wildlife cams. Plus I don't think Jazzy would have
come home or be this calm if she were still out there, alive. If she were,
I know Jazzy would be crying a lot and/or looking for her. She doesn't seem
really sad though as I have heard/read that cats will do when another cat in
the household dies. She is being overly affectionate and purring nearly
constantly when she is not sleeping. And she is sleeping a lot.

We once had to pay to put two cats in a shelter. I would have loved to have
kept them but I couldn't really afford three cats in those days plus Maui
didn't like other cats. I think we had to pay $150 for the two of them to
get them their needed shots and to get them fixed. Otherwise they wouldn't
take them.

It's quite possible that her internal clock was reset during the time
she was gone, but it sounds like she misses her baby/friend and is
looking at you for love and reassurance. She might be depressed if
she's sleeping more during the daytime than a cat usually sleeps,
which is most of the time.

Not only everything you had to do... on top of that, I also had the
experience of needing to keep a stray cat for 30 days just so I could
claim I owned it - so a no kill shelter would take it. I suppose I
could have lied, but I didn't know that rule when I took it there the
first time and I didn't know how good their record keeping was. It
was a nice enough cat, but we didn't want another one (on a permanent
basis).

My cats have always been outside cats at night. In the beginning, I
would set out food and water at night and saw raccoon paw prints in
the morning... so I finally bought a clue and stopped feeding the
raccoons.

I set up a wildlife camera on the porch yesterday. Something was crapping
on my deck. One right after the other. First shot of a raccoon, then a cat.
I figured it was probably a raccoon before I set up camera. I set up the
camera out back. Saw one ground hog today. I was concerned, neighbor
thought he saw a Fisher, but that's not normal for this area.

She is likely sleeping more because she got no sleep while outside. But her
spirits seem fine so long as we are here. We had to leave her home alone
today and she did not like that.

I had these two for a while. A local hay and grain place had told me they
would take them. But then they just kept putting me off. One excuse after
another. They did loan me a big shelter for them. Sadly I had to leave
them outside during the winter while I was at work. Once I got home, I
could bring them in, in the shelter. There was room for food and water in
there but no litter box. I had to shut them in there to protect them from
Maui and shut her in the bedroom. This was not ideal for anyone.
Thankfully my husband called around and found a no kill shelter that would
take them.

I saw something in my pics that I could not identify. Was small and skinny
and tan colored. Looked sort of like a very small weasel.

Oops! I think I did a blank reply!

My mother tells me stories of roaches at her sister's house. I was little
so don't remember. I do remember that they were not big on maintenance. I
can remember going into my cousin's room and being bothered by the light.
It didn't look right. I mentioned it and was told that there was a bulb
out. So now any time I enter a bedroom with a light bulb burned out, my
mind flashes back to that room!

My uncle was not a clean person himself. He did not bathe. I don't think
he ever bathed! I don't know how my aunt put up with him. Neither was a
small person and they slept together in a twin sized bed! He came to visit
me once and I wound up having to throw out the chair that he sat in. This
was in the days before Febreeze and there was nothing on the market at that
time (that I knew about anyway) that would take the body odor smell out. We
also took them out to eat and on a road trip. That was rather unpleasant.
At the time I had some kind of little perfume in my purse and I kept pulling
it out and sniffing it. And my dad stopped at any and all stores, historic
sites, anywhere that looked like we could get some air. Luckily for us,
something went wrong with his car on the way there. Radiator leak or
something. Right by a waterfall. We had some cups in the car and we took
turns filling cups and running them across the street to get enough water in
there to get us home.

Anyway the story was that we ate dinner at their house and my uncle sat at
the head of the table as is often common for men to do, or was in those
days. This would have been the early 1960's. He started passing the food
and when it got back to him, he put the bowls and plates on the floor. My
mom was horrified. She was even more horrified when they were clearing the
table to do with dishes. She said all these roaches went scurrying behind
the fridge as they entered. We never ate at their house again.

My newsserver sometimes skips messages and I see the originals quoted when
someone responds to them. It's a free newsserver though so I guess I can't
complain. "You get what you pay for."

No, they released the dog to AFC since the owners didn't pay and it was the
second offense of her running loose. She was in terrible shape, emaciated,
and a rack of bones. I saw pics of her when she was first brought in (not
surprised she ran away twice) and after AFC rescued her from the pound, got
her well, and put her up for adoption. It doesn't even look like the same
dog. I would never want her returned to them. I've had her for three years
now and she's never once run away..

I had two cats. Mom and daughter. Some animal was tormenting them on June
28. I thought it was a raccoon but the pet psychic said it was a large gray
tabby. She might have been right. The tabby has been spotted on the
wildlife cam and it came by again last night. Jazzy was very upset! Jazzy
is the mom. They both went out the barely opened window and the screen was
knocked out. Psychic said the tabby pulled them out.

There is severe damage to the screen caused by the other animal. Jazzy has
a wound to her tail and face. We never did find the daughter. Psychic said
she was injured and stuck in some bushes next door. And she might have been
in there because Jazzy kept going in there but try as we might, we could not
find her.

So when Jazzy came back home, we concluded that her daughter is no longer.
If she were still alive, she would still be out there looking. They were
very close. So now we are going to adopt a kitten as soon as daughter gets
out of the shower. We saw a calico that we wanted but that was a few days
ago. Might not still be there but they had tons of kittens.

Someone's got to pay the people who work there, the food bill,
the lights. Donations only go so far.
