Default How Far Do You/Would You Drive?

A woman sent an email to the Dataw listserv. Subject: Whole Foods to
Open in August! She was all excited.

I read the email. She's excited because she won't have to drive to Mt.
Pleasant, SC anymore. Mt. Pleasant is at least 100 miles away. Now
she'll only have to drive about 50 miles to Savannah, GA!

Would you drive that far just to shop at a Whole Foods? Or any specific
store, for that matter?

I would need more than that one reason to make the trip.

I drive about 75 miles one way to do all of my shopping, no other
options to speak of.

Agreed.

~60mi each way to shop at Central Market, Restaurant Depot, Frys and a
few other places. I try to plan out a trip to maximize the productivity
and get the most out of the fuel $.

I may. As it is now, I often drive about 30 miles to some of my
favorite stores. When we do, we try to make a day of it, shopping at
a couple of stores, lunch, maybe a side trip.

Where I get my kielbasa is 30 miles north, but I also stop at the
bakery for rye bread. Another Polish Deli is about 40 miles west and
we make two other stops while there. Whole Foods is about 35 miles
east and we stop in Providence and shop on Federal Hill at the Italian
stores too.

Most of these trips are once a month or so, not to do the weekly
shopping.

I drive about 22,000 miles a year. I'll drive any place, any time.

No, but I suppose it depends on what is available in one's locale.
Also, I assume she would stock up and not make the trip very
frequently.

I might drive a long distance to cabelas, wheeling WV. I've gone to Rodgers
Ohio, Friday only flea market, got some good farm produce. 5 miles is
usually my limit.
I could explore Pittsburgh wholesale strip district, and various other
places, but choose not. I don't like city traffic. I know what's it's like
to live in the sticks, or between cities.

We have had to go that far or further to a military commissary when they
shut the Oakland Army base. In those days, making the trip once a month or
so was worth it to me. I didn't save on everything but I could certainly
save on a lot of things like cheese. And I could get inexpensive kid's
clothes for Angela but I soon learned that they weren't worth it. They were
made of that kind of cotton that might either shrink or stretch after it was
washed and dried. Was the Ponytails brand. But they also sold designer
clothing for good prices (for designer stuff that is). Angela didn't wear
that kind of stuff unless I could get it on clearance but my one SIL would
only dress her kids in such things. So I could get them gifts there. And I
could get really nice Easter and Christmas dresses for around $10 or less.
It was also a good place to buy perfume and other pricey gift items. And
seasonal stuff like Christmas wrap I really did save a lot of money by
shopping there.

But Whole Foods? A store where most of what they sell is overpriced to
begin with? No. I will not go out of my way to go there and luckily I
don't have to. We have PCC and Central Market, both of which are similar
and both of which have better prices. Whole Foods does sell other things
like Tom's. And we do go there about every 3-4 weeks but we buy very
little. We were there today and what we bought was only about a half a bag
of stuff. And it was almost $40! They did have a good price on grapes and
they and the other two stores I mentioned have by far the best wheat grass
which is one reason we went there. We were also near there though. I would
not have driven out there just for that. But we had to go to another store
that was a few blocks away. So we stopped on the way home.

Now perhaps if I had never been to a Whole Foods and had nothing similar, I
might go out of curiosity but... I tend not to go to any one place unless I
have to. I always plan to go to as many places as I might possibly need to
go in any given area. So I would put off such a trip until I did need to go
other places along the way.

I can remember someone here urging me to go to Whole Foods. At that time
the closest ones were in Bellevue and Seattle. But I have Central Market
just up the street and from everything I had read, they were very similar.
The difference being, I think, that Central Market also sells some
mainstream things like Lay's chips, Coke and other soft drinks, and they
carry the Western Family brand of foods, paper goods and cleaning products.
They are inexpensive and everything I've tried of that brand is very good.
So to me that's the best of both worlds. I can get organic, and I can also
get cheap or mainstream.

The first time we did go to Whole Foods was in Bellevue. It was just sort
of a fluke thing. Angela had been scheduled for an MRI and the machine
broke so they sent us to Children's in Bellevue. We spotted the Whole Foods
on the way there and begged to stop. We bought a couple of bags of stuff
and were sorely disappointed in pretty much everything we bought there. The
salad and hot food bar stuff was not tasty. The very expensive gluten free
bread that we bought was moldy. We could not see that due to the way it was
packaged.

But when they opened the store in Lynnwood, we did give it a shot. They do
have some things that I can't get anywhere else but online. Like the chia
cheese. And they have vegan donuts! Although the quality of them really
does vary. I'll get one and really like it, then the next time get one and
won't like it at all. Got an apple fritter once and never encountered an
apple at all. It just seemed like greasy dough. But then the next time I
got one, it was excellent! And no, I do not eat the whole thing at once. I
cut a piece off and stick the rest in the freezer. Angela and my mom do the
same. So something like that lasts us a long time.

It depends on what you have closer of course. I get the feeling you
don't have many shopping options within a few miles. So if my choices
were just mom/pop stores or stores that aren't big enough to offer lower
prices, I'd drive there once a month or so to stock up. Or to another
store that I liked, because I'm not really a fan of Whole Foods for most
of my needs.

I live out in the boonies, so driving 50 miles to shop is no big deal.
I do, however, try and squeeze as much as I can into one trip, so it's
usually an all day deal.

Other than the small market in town all other markets are no less than
a 15 mile drive, so I keep a running list on my desk and when it's
time to make a necessary trip in that direction, like a doctor
appointment, I will shop at several stores and stock up, especially
non-perishables as I have unlimited storage space.

Me too. But I also do a lot of shopping on line, I can usually find
better prices and free shipping right to my door for many
non-perishable food items, especially ethnic condiments. I'd rather
search for difficult to find items by mouse than drive my car all over
creation... also saves me from having to lug heavy items from distant
stores and I buy several items by the case/bulk. I shop often at
http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/ They have good products, good
prices and only charge a flate rate of $4.49 (a little more than one
gallon of gas) for any size order. I bought my lawn mower on line,
from Amazon, better price than anywhere else, free shipping... saved
me from having to drive a 40 mile round trip to a big box store, have
to lug it home, and waste a day. On line is my first place to shop...
the last time I was at a maul has to be some twenty five years ago.

A Whole Foods is opening today 50 miles from me. I'll be in the
neighborhood sometime next week and will check it out then. If it
carries what I'm looking for I'll make the trip on a regular basis. I
drive farther than that now in order to stock up on items I can't get
locally.

There's one 1.5 miles from me and I haven't bothered to go there yet. I have
a locally owned healthfood store only 1/4 mile from me that has all that I
need (other than regular grocery stores).

I go to TJ occasionally for some exotic items but it doesn't impress me much
either

My grocery store options are few. I've posted before it's about 20
miles to grocery shop. I go to Publix.

There is a Food Lion across the street. That store is dingy and old; it
*really* needs a face-lift. It is allegedly less expensive than Publix.
But I found it depressing to shop there. My neighbor told me last
week she'd heard it was cheaper, too. But she didn't like the store,
either.

I could drive about 8 miles further and go to Piggly Wiggly. I've not
been to The Pig since I lived in Memphis. I shopped there in the
1980's. I haven't been to the one in Beaufort. But I can't imagine a
reason to drive an extra 8 or so miles just to shop there.

OTOH, The Pig does have a home grocery delivery option in this area.

I could drive further and buy groceries at WalMart. Never going to
happen. And I'm sure not driving to Savannah to take a look at Whole
Foods.

Unfortunately, I am not that efficient. It is lucky that most
places that I get groceries are fairly near here.

Before I discovered online shopping I only went to WF for one specific
item, empty gelcaps for my cat's medication. Now I can get them easily
with a click. I never found anything very special there to make the
trip. I went to one in Gaithersburg MD because it is close to where I
work. Not sure if there are any close to my home. But I drive more
than 50 miles round trip in traffic to get to work, at least when I go
there. Mostly I work from home. I'm very lucky to be able to do that.

Well it all hinges on what they have that a person might want. Have heard of folks driving 20 miles round trip to get special stuff..but since some have obviously been naggin at the website they are now moving closer to the debit card. Sure the CEO of the place can tell its a no brainer to take a trip much shorter to Central Market or Sprouts to leave them plumb out of the pic. Smart folks follow the money huh?

I used to make a 70 mile round trip to Costco once a month or so Then again
buying their gas made the trip worthwhile.

Whole foods I would not go around the block. I think they're a rip-off.

Default How Far Do You/Would You Drive?

I go to Whole Foods almost every weekday -- it's on my regular lunch
time route, and very near our framers' market.

I cook for two, and I prefer everything as fresh as can be -- so all I
buy at WF is produce, seafood, cheese, and meat. Basically, I go around
the periphery of the store, and have no reason to go down any of the aisles.

I skip their baked good, which are *all* flavorless.

For the rest of my grocery shopping (name brand and packaged goods), I
drive 1 to 2 miles to a Harris Teeter, Giant, or Safeway about once a week.

What am I doing that's so unusually efficient, don't most people shop
with a list? I only keep a list so I won't forget things but that
doesn't mean I only stick to my list, I typically buy a lot more items
that are not on my list as once I get to the stores I notice things I
hadn't thought about. And I'd think by now since the advent of
ridiculously steep fuel prices folks would have long ago began
consolidating their shopping trips.

I know I do. Unless I'm running in for one specific item (I can't think
of what that might be), of course I have a list.

I only keep a list so I won't forget things but that
> doesn't mean I only stick to my list, I typically buy a lot more items

Same here. There's no one cracking a whip saying "stick to the list!"
LOL I buy things that aren't on the list. Often times I rethink an
item on the list and cross it off. Lists are handy.

And I'd think by now since the advent of
> ridiculously steep fuel prices folks would have long ago began

I've been doing that for a number of years. Fuel prices aside, I simply
don't like shopping. I consider it a chore. I pretty much always know
what I have on hand and when things are running low. So yes, I keep a
list. I wait until I need a number of things before making the trip.

If there are other stops I can make at the same time, that's great! The
veterinary office where I buy Persia's r/x food is near the grocery
store. So is Grayco Hardware. It's nice when multiple stops can be
consolidated into one trip.

I guess I have been and am spoiled by the proximity of various
markets. Thus I go to the store quite frequently armed with my
list. I get ca 55 mpg, so I don't seriously dent a gallon even
with multiple trips.

I drive 20 miles to the only meat store I know of that sells chicken
backs. I have done it just for that but I also have a sister a mile
from the butcher and I sometimes stop to see her, too. Fifty miles
would require at least one other stop besides Whole Paycheck.

A little secret, the Italian places on Federal Hill are mostly a rip off
and you can make the stuff yourself if you're adventurous. I mean, how
hard can Pasta and Broccoli be, or Sausage and Potatoes? Really? Veal
and peas is also simple too.

I live in RI - know what my annual mileage comes out to? Under 10K. Of
course it's on some of the most congested and ill maintained roadways in
the country and drivers who will try the patience of a saint.

The Food Lions in northeastern NC look like they're still stuck int he
1970's.

My favorite was when I went down to D.C. for the National Equality
March. We stopped at a Burger King of all places and it still had that
mustard yellow plastic dining room.

Federal Hill has gone down hill over the years. I still go to Tony's
for a few things though, Venda Ravioli has a few things. The old
CheeseShop was great until the old man passed away. His daughter ran
it for a while but it was never the same.

Interesting. The Food Lion in our little, 5000 person, town in
northwestern NC got renovated a year or so ago. Still not my favorite
place to shop. I still prefer Ingles (regional chain) and the only
other place is Walmart. When Walmart first opened the super store
here we decided to look it over. I picked up a package of chuck roast
and saw the word "ingredients: bouillon) or maybe it was consomme I
left. Chuck roast should not have "ingredients."

I'm not real rural, but rural enough. Closest store is 8 mi. Three
more, 20 mi. Then it's 100 to the big city. I usta live in SFBA
where I could find anything if I was willing to drive, a nightmarish
experience at best. That was when I was making a good living and had
a car that got 35mpg. Now, I'm contemplating not even owning a car
and I wouldn't return to CA at gunpoint. Online shopping delivers to
my door and is cheaper than driving and fer $10 a pop, I can be
shuttled direct to the closest store.

Much of this is being dictated by gas prices. We're up to $3.65 gal,
here, and I know many of you pay more. A car is no longer an option
for me. I figure I might buy a motorcycle fer the summer, but in
winter, I can ride my bicycle or fall back on the shuttle. It's
gonnna be a new world, folks. I don't see gas prices going back down
again, ever, and the days of unlimited travel for any reason will soon
begin to diminish.

IKWYM Petrol here is £1.40 per litre which works out at £6.30 a
gallon ($10 per gallon) Our cars are diesel which is even more
expensive

I'm planning to go to Rhode Island this weekend with my daughter. She's vegetarian but eats eggs and fish. Any restaurant recommendations in Newport that are reasonably priced?

I agree. They also have these wonderful looking prepared foods
that they manage to make tasteless. They need to learn how to use
spices and herbs.

However, their water crackers are very cheap and quite good.
