As I've said before, I've never grown watermelon and happened to
have a patch of bare earth that I wanted covered. So I planted a watermelon. Ready for a laugh? If you pick a watermelon way too early and cut it open, what color will the insides be? This one was yellow. Did I manage to plant one of those yellow watermelons? Or do red watermelons start out as yellow. Told you it was a laughable question. What a rube. nancy |

If the innards are yellow, I suspect you planted a yellow watermelon -- but don't quote me on that. Janet US |

I don't want to keep picking them too early, but I have a couple that I think must be ready to go. I'll look at them tomorrow. These are small watermelons with a dark green rind. I'll be checking for the yellow belly. Thanks! nancy |

There is a variety available locally called Tiger melon which is alternating light and dark skinned and like a volleyball only a bit bigger. The flesh is yellow to light orange and has a hint of lemony flavour. http://lifeworksrestaurants.com/site/wp- content/uploads/2011/07/tigerbaby-melon.jpg http://tinyurl.com/luex7mz -- Traditions are group efforts to keep the unexpected from happening. -- Barbara Tober |

Rather like personal watermelons, and not really showing signs of getting much larger. > There is a variety available locally > called Tiger melon which is alternating light and dark skinned and > like a volleyball only a bit bigger. But they are nowhere near volleyball size. nancy |

Aw, don't be dismayed. No one's born knowing everything. |

It says this is Watermelon Sugar Baby, and the picture shows a red fleshed round bowling ball sized melon with dark green rind. 80 days, supposedly, that would be from early May or so. I should have taken a picture of the unripe one, the inside was pure yellow. I should break down and get a scale of some sort, it says they will be 8-10 pounds. Of course, it's still the yellow spot that I will be looking for. nancy |

Here, scroll through these watermelons http://tinyurl.com/mzeswdh and decide which yellow one is yours. Scroll to the end of watermelons and they give tips on how to know if a watermelon is ripe. It wasn't a wimpy unripe looking color, not that that means anything. But the picture of the Sugar Baby, that is exactly what it looks like growing in my yard, and it is a Burpee tag. Thanks for the heads up on the watermelon tips. nancy |
