I love to look at the stuff intended for college dorms. Got a great buy on
a little purple mini fridge online at Walmart. Only $69! We've been running out of fridge space partly because I no longer have that freezer and partly because I now have to stock bottled drinks that I didn't before. I need cold ones to take when we go to see my dad. So there wasn't enough room for the cans that we usually drink. This fridge is smaller than my other little fridge and it fits in the family room. Kind of takes the sting out of the fact that I was unable to get my long coveted "Eggplant" colored sofa. Discontinued and although it was available for sale, the place selling it would not pick up the old one and dispose of it. I had to settle for a brown one. It will arrive on Thu. And (hopefully this will be true) I had two people from the store tell me that not only will they dispose of the old couch but also the other old couch and loveseat in the backhouse! I would have been happy for them just to have taken this one couch but if they can take the others, it's like a dream come true! What do people do who buy new furniture? I had a heck of a time finding stores that deliver and will also take away the old stuff. And mostly the ones that do did not have what I was looking for. Like Reclinerland. As much as I love that store, I am just not into those reclining sofas. Or Lazy Boy. Most of what they sell is too large scale for my tastes. And too expensive! I got a nice milk crate style bin today also in purple for the laundry room. Now everything is contained. Even the slippers that I keep in there for those times when I need to run outside really quickly and have no shoes on. It is a smaller than a standard milk crate but it is the perfect size. This is also a great time to pick up a new microwave if you need one. We saw terrific sales on those and also lots of small appliances for the kitchen, but we don't currently need any of those. |

I recently replaced my living room furniture that was about 12 years old. I was told very few places will remove your old stuff, but you can get delivery for a price. I'm lucky in that my refuge pickup will take furniture provided it doesn't have any glass, like glass topped tables. I only had to have my brother help me move mine to the curb. -- CAPSLOCK–Preventing Login Since 1980. |

I find that odd, but I haven't bought furniture for about 5 years now. They have always delivered and hauled the old couches and love seats away, from Breuners to our local stores. Did they change in recent years? Cheri |

Mine *might* take it. Not sure. I can call and get extra stuff taken for a fee. The problem would be getting it to the curb. The couch that I currently have is horribly heavy. It has a queen sized bed in it. It used to belong to my parents and is nothing I ever would have chosen. The couch I had when Angela was born got wrecked on the first day that I had it. I didn't know it but a staple came loose from it and tore the fabric. I did stitch it back up but it never looked the same. And then of course Angela did a number on it in a variety of ways prior to age 4. My parents bought me the set that I loved. Couch and loveseat that are in the back house. They are beautiful. Cream color with mauve flowers. Very comfortable too. Part of the problem? It was only $250 for the set. So you can imagine how well they held up. I did expect as such but with a young child I did not want anything expensive. She did do a number on the couch right away too. Involved scissors and an pen. You can imagine how livid I became when her pre-K teacher told me that she needed more experience using scissors. Oh no she did not! So much so that I had hidden all of the scissors at home The final straw came when the stitching just became undone. And it was not the type of design where you could use a cover over it. Now that I think of it, neither is the new one but... I really dislike the slipcover look that we have now. It is a fitted one and when I sit down on it, it's fine. But seemingly when anyone else sits on it, the cover becomes disloged and then it just looks even crappier than it did with the cover! At any rate, the new one isn't expensive either. It's pretty much almost the bottom of the barrel in price in terms of something I could get delivered and also have the old one picked up. There was one cheaper at another store but neither Angela or I liked it. Was just too old fashioned looking for our tastes. We did see a lot of stuff that we liked at Big Lots but I don't think they deliver and then of course there is the pick up. Another thing I have noticed is that in terms of color of furniture, most of it is some shade of brown! Bleh. The next most popular color seems to be sage green. Even more bleh IMO. Followed then by grey or slate blue. I just could not find a color that I wanted anywhere. So, brown it is. At least it will fit in this room since the only other pieces of furniture are a light brown and a leopard print of light and dark brown. Accents are purple, gold and green. That'll have to do. |

As I said in the other post, it is so heavy, there is no way I could get it anywhere. Not even out the door. My old couch that we got rid of on Staten Island, for as bad as it was did at least have one redeeming quality. It had a super comfortable double bed in it. This one has the Seinfeld type bar in the back Queen bed. Oh how that bed brought back bad memories. I had the double bed growing up. Not my choice. But when I decided to buy the white French Provencial canopy bed set from Sears (with my own money) when I was in the 3rd grade, my parents insisted that I get a double bed so that I could use their old mattress. Then because I had the bigger bed, every time we had company, they got to stay in my room and I got the back breaking bed. I would beg them. Please! Just let me sleep on the COUCH! Not the BED! But, no. The memories of that were so bad that when we moved back here and had to stay with them, we had sleeping bags shipped to their house. Angela and I slept on the floor. My husband said we were making a big deal out of it and he'd sleep on the bed. I was like... Fine! Whatever. You'll see! But I think what they wound up doing was taking the mattress from my dad's bed and putting it over that in an attempt to make it more comfortable. |

Did they change > in recent years? Apparently so. When we got the new set when we lived on Staten Island, we didn't even ask about haul away because we needed the bed that was in the old couch. We actually only ever needed to use it once for guests but many people had said they would come to visit and didn't. Getting rid of it there was not a problem. My husband just hauled it up by the trash cans and they took it. I knew there was a potential problem when my parents got a new rocking chair from Lazy Boy. They asked about delivery and the woman said they would also haul away the old one (I think for an additional fee) and that most places wouldn't do that. Then when we got my husband a new recliner as a retirement gift, we learned that this was true. Places like Sears will not take the old one. We learned even more when we went into some stores looking for a couch. Not only do some places not deliver but very few will pick up. And some that used to pick up, won't do it now. There is one place that advertises that they give superior customer service. That was the place that claimed they had the couch that I want coming in on July 28. Two of them. I found this suspect because nobody else had it in stock and when I called the company that makes it, they said that it had been discontinued. So not only do they not haul away but they don't even know anyone who will do it for a fee. I also know that it is very common in this area for people to put old furniture outside. Sometimes with a sign that says "Free" on it. I guess they are hoping that someone will take it but from the looks of it, they rarely do. |

It is odd because I think almost all of the appliace places will take the old appliances. And the mattress places will usually take the old mattresses. What do they think we will do with the old stuff? My nephew has a truck but we just don't have the manpower to lift all this heavy stuff. |

Wow, I have never encountered a furniture store that would take away your old stuff. The exception is mattresses. It would be very convenient if they would do so. My town has bulk pickup a couple of times a month so I just have to get it to the curb. Otherwise I would need to call some hunks with a truck type of service. nancy |

It's getting it to the curb that's the problem. I have found someone who has manpower and will haul away stuff for us for a fee. He's the neighbor of a person from the dance studio. That will have to wait though. Still waiting on that money we are owed and I just ordered a new computer desk so want to get that set up and this one out of here first. |
