Default OT Kitten Matters

Hi friends,

I've been off list for a while. I was diagnosed with small cell lung
cancer in mid-July. Came out of no where. Was fine and then had a pain
in my lower let back. thought it was a pulled muscle (you know me with
the gym and the yoga stuff) but it defied treatment, so they stuck me in
hospital and pulled a liter of crud from my left lung. Got it tested
and there was cancer. invasive and quick.

Had one round of chemo and it has now shrunk to less than half the size.
Next week for 3 days is round two. Daughter is coming in from NJ.
Three weeks later is round 3 and I should be done. Still have hair.
Wish I had more of an appetite.

Had several more lung drainings and a half a liter on Thursday, but it
means my body is fighting. I also have lots and lots of people praying
and sending good thoughts. a mani-pedi and a haircut last week were the
best medicine and I had an amazing birthday lunch on 8/13 with a
surprise from half my Pilates class coming. I am so blessed with friends!

Steve let me know that someone was asking about kitten raising, so if
you can repost, I'd be happy to help. We turned over #5 who we brought
home May 1 and named Cinca de Mayo in early June and she is now in a
loving home and thriving. All of our foster babies are doing great.
Told DH that as soon as I'm better, we'll take another baby.

I missed our back to back Baltic and Transatlantic cruise, but we have
moved it to next summer, so we will have a do over.

Doctors and we are very optimistic. This is not my first rodeo and I'm
gonna ride this bronc until I bust it.

I'm the one who asked about kittens.

First, sorry to hear about your ordeal, but your attitude sounds positive and I know it will bring you safely off that bronc'.

I had asked for brand names of what to feed a kitten of say 6 weeks til adulthood. I may get into fostering, as my shelter is overflowing with kittens right now. As I have had only adult cats, I am not sure what to feed and thought you had plenty of experience.

Thanks.

Oh, many many purrs are headed your way! Your positive attitude goes a
long way in helping to beat this nasty disease. You are in my thoughts.

Scary stuff. I didn't know if I should explain why you didn't answer
about the cat fostering or if that was bad Facebook etiquette. I've
been thinking good thoughts for you every day.

Any Vet will be able to tell you all you need to know... they will
give you literature and lots of free samples of kitten food that they
get for free from the pet food companys... they usually have kits made
up. Contact any of the major pet food companys and they will also
answer your questions, send you literature, free samples, and many
coupons. Also any of the major chain pet stores, like Petco, will
have a large section with all sorts of kitten products and someone
will help you with how-to info... some of the stores will send a
volunteer to your home to instruct. Pets are a huge business,
there're plenty of freebies out there. Oh, and never use clumping cat
litter for kittens.

a 6 week old kitten has teeth and can probably manage kibble pretty
well. We fed ours Purina Kitten Chow unless someone donated something
else to the shelter. We did give them an occasional bit of canned food,
but you have to remember that someone will be adopting this kitty and
they might not have the resources to feed fancy wet food, so it is best
to give them kibble and water.

If they balk at the kibble, soak it in water. Some of them are
reluctant to use their new teeth. Cinca de Mayo went directly from
bottle to dry kibble, but the others went from bottle to Momma Janet's
Kitten Swill which was a combo of Hartz Mountain kitten formula, soaked
kibble and a strong-smelling wet food.

I learned that kittens will eat better if the stuff smells good, so if
you have a problem with kibble add a little kitten food salmon to the
soaked kibble.

Let me know if you need any more help and bless you for taking them on.

We did use clumping litter, PetSmart brand, and they never had a problem
with it. Ours were such babies that I would hold them over the litter
box and stimulate them with wet cotton balls. When the urine and feces
began to come out it would hit the litter and that's where they learned
to go when they became capable of doing it themselves.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts, prayers and good wishes. I
will beat this because I have too many things to do, places to see and
new friends to make. I'm just not ready to go.

I also want all of you to know how lucky and wonderful you have made me
feel with your concern and care.

Am I supposed to reply to the kitten stuff on the FB list?

Janet,

Lung cancer is evil, but it sounds as if the doctors caught it before it
spread far beyond your chest. Keep plugging along--there will
undoubtedly be plenty of kittens to foster once you're off chemo.

Thanks, Cindy. It was caught early. Doctor showed us the first scan
and then the one from after the first chemo. Evil Thing was about 1/3
the size, so we know we have good reason for hope.

Sigh. My mother, may she rest in peace, tried to teach me. I never got
the hang of it. Can't crochet worth a damn either, but I can sew,
embroider and I used to be on hell of a beader.

A well-tied turban and maybe a brooch pinned on it is SO much more
funky elegant and stylish

Also try on some Berets. A beret and a scarf and you can pretend you are
French. Speak in a slight French accent and all the people in the Rio
Grande Valley won't know what to make of you!

I am glad the chemo is starting to work.... you are in our prayers.

Ask the doctors for something to help in that direction. I don't know which
State you're in but some states allow cannabis for lack of appetite

Don't think it's legal in TX. Though the thought is appealing (last
toke is way beyond the statute of limitations)I'm trying to be as drug
free as possible. Stopped coffee, alcohol and even Coke Zero, which was
a definite addiction. Am not even allowed to take vitamins.

When I played the nutty medium in the Noel Coward play, "Blythe Spirit"
a couple of years ago, I looked up turban tying on the internet. I'm
just too clutzy to get it right. :-)

Have to see what's available. I like bright blues, purple, pink, red.
I don't do green, yellow or orange.

They will think I am one of those horrid Quebec Winter Texans that are
developing an unhappy, but not undeserved, reputation down here for
rudeness. :-)

Thank you George.

We are still planning to be in Cleveland, TX in late September to go to
the Yankee games in Houston. Looking forward to visiting with you and
Becca and finding some great local eateries.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bull**** and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.
