Default OT cat nursing

Yes, I know there are cat newsgroups but they are essentially dead. Since
there are cat people here, I am asking here. So... We had two cats. Jazzy
(mom) and Bali (daughter). Jazzy continued to nurse Jazzy beyond a year of
age and I think, eventually stopped.

Both cats were snatched from the house by a raccoon and we think it killed
Bali. We never found her and it has been almost 2 months now. So we
adopted Jetta who is now about 5 months old.

The other day, I noticed that Jazzy's teats were pronounced. I thought this
was a bit odd but I am not familiar with cat teats. We had a cat who had
kittens when I was a kid but my parents gave her away not long after she had
them. My other cats were all spayed.

But... I just saw the two of them together and Jetta was nursing from
Jazzy. Both seemed to be enjoying it so I didn't do anything but... I am
wondering if this is normal? Can cats relactate this easily?

My friend said that her mom's cat had a new litter of kittens but still
continued to nurse Buddy, her kitten that was over a year old and always her
favorite. She said the mom would nurse him before the new kittens.

She may not be lactating, the kitten may be just sucking for comfort.

I had a female dog that would do this if a pup was brought into the
house.

The teats look very full though. But I guess I don't know for sure.

Probably a coyote. Possibly a raccon. Doubtful.

Yes. I had a male cat many years ago that nevr stopped trying to nurse.
Female cats can nurse other kittens than there own. They've even been known
to nurse baby squirrels and een puppies when they had no litter of their
own.

Same as humans, they play favorites. Some mothers will even kill a kitten
they don't like.

Not doubtful at all. Two raccoons were trapped and removed. One was very
vicous. That one was the one that was coming around, banging on the doors
and windows. And Jazzy's injuries were thought to be from a raccoon,
according to the vet. The wildlife cams I have set up have shown a Stellar
Jay, a squirrel, mom and two baby raccoons and several cats. Since the
other two raccoons were trapped.

Yes. We had a cat who killed all but one kitten and it was only a matter of
time before she got to the last one.

Could be, but unlikely. Raccoons are just not that fast though they can be
very mean when they have to be. If your cat cornered it, then yes, the
raccoon could have gotten the better of it. Really rare, though. The fact
your cat was not eaten is a sign it could have been a defensive kill.

The raccoon pulled both cats through the window. Don't know if it ate Bali
or what. We never found the body.

I don't think it's common (or natural) for any animal mother to kill
her babies. I have read somewhere in the past that they will do this
if there is a problem with the offspring. Like a genetic defect or
something. Only humans will keep birth defective babies, but then we
have hospitals and animals don't.

Absolutely bizarre. Never heard of anything like it.

Probably just her imagination. Her cats most likely jumped out of the
window and the lost one got hit by a car somewhere. Raccoons aren't
going to pull some fighting cat out of a window. Give me a break.

It is absolutely beyond belief. I don't know of any predator that would do
this. Or could do this. I live with raccoons and have for decades. They
are just not like that. Yeah they can attack pets but never like this.
Cats are way too fast for them. Plus to break through glass implies a
knowledge of glass which raccoons do not possess. They would not be able to
figure out a screen let alone plate glass.

When my cat's vet laughed at me when my pal was dying and I was grasping at
anything to save him I grabbed him by the collar, shoved him against a wall
and told him mayb he should get another career.

I got a new vet, needless to say.

I think you meant Bali... get your story straight.

Snatched from the house by a raccoon. Really?! That's not what you
said before.

Do you really think if your cats were snatched by a raccoon they'd not
have screamed bloody murder? I guess they just went along quietly.
"Okay, Mr. Raccoon. We have met our fate and you are it." Not in any
animal kingdom I'm aware of.

Astounding. What kind of vet is that?? I have had the vet say We could
try this and from the look in their eyes and shaking their head No, I
know it's time. They have always been very upset about it. Laughing?

Yep, the whole story is just wrong. No cat is going to go "gently into
that good night" at the hands of a raccoon. Cats are going to scream
and fight, even if they're declawed.

I guess she was too busy worrying about what her family will and won't
eat so the raccoon got both cats without her hearing the yowls. Good grief.

Many animals will nurse a youngster that is not theirs and some will nurse youngsters who are not even their species. The internet is full of those videos. It is not unusual at all.

I haven't noticed him telling unbelievable tales before, so I take
him at his word. Also, I've seen some behavior from people doctors
I found disturbing, it's not unrealistic to hear there's an
unsympathetic vet out there.

As I recall I asked if there was an advanced surgery center. This excuse
for a vet had just diagnosed him with a thymoma next to his heart. He
laughed and shook his head and said something like "hey it's your money
pal."

There was a specialized surgery center as it turns out, they did get the
thymoma out and he survided.

When I found his new vet, which I have kept for 20 years now, she asked who
I was seeing and why was I changing. I told her and she kind of rolled her
eyes and said, you're not my first self referal.

Paul makes shit up all the time. He frequently gets caught in his web of lies and then stops posting for a while.

I guess he was right in one respect ... he wasn't worth the money.
Luckily you found one who was. Nice to hear the cat made it.

An army of racoons come through my barn most nights (my neighbor can
see the back of my barn from his windows and has often counted over
25), they never bother my two barn cats, they could never catch them.
There are all kinds of ferocious critters out there but the cats can
scoot thirty feet up onto the barn's catwalks in two seconds... large
animals can't get up there nor would much of the catwalks support
them. The critters that come through the barn are only looking for
cat food leavings, they aren't interested in the cats.

Exactly. When kittens are born blind and/or deaf the mother won't
nurse them and will kill them rather than allow them to struggle
trying to live a few more days... instead she will put her efforts
towards caring for the healthy ones... she's not going to jeapordize
the healthy ones and risk her own life caring for the sick in vain. To
humans nature seems very cruel but there are reasons for animal
behavior. Had I not gotten Newt to the Vet this week with his
abscessed tooth he would have died with great suffering... it would
have been a more merciful death had some preditor got him. Fortunately
with the tooth extracted and a bunch of antibiotics he is doing fine
now. In the wild there's no one to help sick critters.

I don't believe the Vet "laughed" anymore than I believe your sicko
story.

Our cat mated with her father. She killed the deformed ones. One looked
fine but we doubted that it really was.

Not my imagination. The screen was destroyed and not in an area where the
cats would have done it. Same raccoon frightened away the workers next
door. It was really a horrible animal.

No glass was broken. It pulled the cat out at the same time that the screen
came down. The type of screens we have are made to pop out really easily.
It then went after the other cat.

Raccoons don't usually kill cats but they can. There are pics on the
internet of barn kittens and what they look like after they were killed. I
will not repost. Too horrific. You can google it if you want.

Jazzy did growl. It was her growling that made me turn and look but by then
she was out the window. It all happened so fast. I never heard Bali growl.
Even though she was 2, she still had a tiny, kitten-like voice. Our new
cat, Jetta has a much louder/deeper voice at 5 months than Bali ever did.
Bali was terrified. I never saw her run so fast, ever. So terrified that
there was no way we could catch her. Jazzy just hid.

> I guess she was too busy worrying about what her family will and won't eat

There were no yowls.
