Default Vintage TV ad for Canadian copy of Aldi

I found this trying to find a trace of Aldi operating in Canada.

Called "Valdi" this discount no frills food store was owned by Steinberg, owners
of Miracle Mart among other stores. By 1981, Aldi had been operating in the US
for about four years, and apparently looked successful.

Looks like they were after the Knob Hill Farms customers.

We had a large Miracle Food Mart in Belleville that was trying to be a
little more upscale than the other Discount Steinberg operations but all
those strikes finally buried Stienberg operations in Ontario. Valdi
might have been a step below Miracle.

Mind you strikes almost buried A and P in Ontario too.

At that time Aldi sold no fresh food, and I imagine Valdi didn't either.

From what I recall of "The Food Terminal" when I was in Toronto in the late
70s, KHF had a huge selection of fruit and vegetables. Plus such less usual
things as capons and rabbits. This was also the first time I bought milk in
plastic bags.

I remember how much better the KFC tasted from Scott's Chicken Villas than it
did south of the border. Wallpaper paste is a good description of US KFC gravy.

Knob hills farms meat counter was the stuff of legend. The Cambridge
store had a 500 foot meat counter. One big long freaking aisle with
about 20 butchers. People would buy whole skinned lambs and whatnot.
People would also eat in the store and leave half opened food packages
around. Kids were always getting lost. The bigger stores were claiming
they had 1 acre of fresh produce.

The joke was: T"he only thing you can't find at Knob Hill Farms is the
floor". One dirty smelly place. Rumours were always around that birds
lived in the stores, nevermind the rats.

I still have about 5 of their baskets. I believe that Cambridge store
was also the world's largest gorcery store for some time. If you look at
the locations of where they built the stores, they were always near
railway tracks, so that trains could deliver there.

I moved to Toronto in 1995 and shopped there till about 1999. I always
threw out half of what I bought which was expensive for a poor 20 year
old like me. most of what i bought would rot on the 10 minute drive home.

I do remember Scotts chicken villa but never recall eating there. I do
remember having a couple of their branded beach balls at our house.
Used to be if you bought a bucket of chicken and some salads you got a
beach ball.

Are there any KFC left open in Canada now? i see so many of them closed.
