I get to see a big chunk of sky in my back yard so I get to see lots
of strange cloud formations. Most are quite beautiful but sometimes
they look downright evil. This was last week at 4:30 PM, lots of very
furious lightening and thunder but this time very little rain... one
minute the sun was shining, the next it was as dark as a very dark
night, very eerie:

Where do you come from?
The dust
Where will you go to?
The grave
Darkness soon falls
Everyone calls
Something wicked this way comes.

That looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. It must be so great to live
where you do. I would love the solitude.

Lots of critters negate the solitude. I share an hour every morning
with my coffee and the birds... and of course the cats, always the
cats. Just try sleeping in solitude with two kittens romping in bed
all night.

I'm not talking about critters, you can enjoy them at your leisure. I'm
talking away from the hustle and bustle of boom boxes, motorcycles, trains,
etc.

Not at all. Storms come in from the north not the west.

It certainly does where I live and up the coast to points North.

I lived in Alameda. We didn't get fog there much but I sure did see it when
we went to San Francisco. And on Cape Cod, we had it early in the morning.

Yes, skies like that are fairly common here, but I know what you mean
The spookiest thing I've experienced (perhaps you are all used to it but
I've only ever seen it once) was when I was driving through a heavy snow
storm with lightening directly above! Seems it is called 'Thundersnow'!

Since sf has you killfiled, I'm commenting so she can see that you are
not always her enemy.

Fog is prevalent in coastal New England but you don't often see it
coming like that pic. When living up there, there were a few times
when I would have to pull off the road for a few minutes. The fog was
so heavy, you literally could not see beyond the hood of your car.
Didn't last but a few minutes that bad though.

I drove in fog like that in Marrieta, Ohio one night. Stopping
is a good way to get hit from behind, and going is a good way to
hit someone. Lose/lose. Even pulling over, if someone behind you
sees your tail lights, they might think that's the way to go.

Fog/driving, a scary mix.

Yeah...the times I pulled over, I just HOPED that someone wouldn't hit
me from behind. If I did it now, I would pull over then get out of
the car and stand well away from it.

Many many years ago we took a family trip to Cape Cod, and one day we
drove up toward Provincetown for whale watching. The fog was so thick
that day they canceled the boat trip and the fog didn't lift until well
into late afternoon. I'd never seen anything like that before. We
stopped at one of the national park beaches, one where you have to walk
down a million steps to get to the sand, and from up there the ocean and
beach were completely obscured.

I don't consider fog banks the same thing as storm clouds, so I still
say...not really.

If you live near Monterey Bay, hopefully you go throw your nasty self
in...during a huge storm. Oh, and bite me. LOL

I've only experienced thundersnow a few times, but it's eery. Thinking
about what causes thunder and lightning being hot and cold air masses
colliding, it's strange to see heavy snow with that going on.

Scary looking, for sure. The last time I saw something like that I was
at the office. It was very early morning. Clear as a bell when I got
there. An hour later, it was black as pitch, no rain to speak of. A
tornado hit a few miles from the office.

Fog is common in Chicago, it is the varying temps of the lake, etc... Oft-times it will be sunny *and* foggy...

Great Lakes weather is *never* boring, that's fer sure...

Nobody cares that it's storm clouds or a fog bank, we have the same
view daily.

Weird, isn't it? It's like rain on a sunny day (which happens too)

I agree. Sheldon posts a nice picture of some clouds and it turns into a ****ing match about who's the biggest authority on fog banks and storm clouds. *yawn*

Just the one time for me, and it was spectacular

True, it is devoid of city sounds here, haven't heard loud music in
years. There are no trains nearby, occasionally a motorcycle zooms
by. School started so now there are a couple of school buses twice a
day, but most days I don't see them. You can always move to a rural
location.

A couple of months ago we had a classic frosty morning with crystal
clear skies... and a rainbow.

It rains here in the lower part of SC quite often when the sun is
shining. It's amusing.

It's so easy to say "you can always move". Things are not always that
simple.
