Default Blimpies

A bit bigger sub than Subway's, or so it seems, plus some real variety.

The have less bread choices though, but the bread they have is more than
acceptable.

I'd give props to the hot pastrami and the roast beef and provolone, the
tuna is about average.

I used to get the blimpies best before the closed all three green bay
location's. I was extremely upset when the last one closed... and they had
a pickle barrel two, which is extremely rare these days.

You must be craving a sandwich! Our local Blimpie's shut down about 2 months ago- there is a note on their window saying they were evicted or ? along those lines.

I haven't see on of those since I was a youngster.

I like Blimpies, no complaints, save for the fact they don't show up on
the Interstates when I'm traveling in the summer.

Do you ever eat at Schlotzky's?

They have an odd round sourdough bun, but it is tasty:

It's the mention of that subpar Subway that set me off, then I started
thinking where else to go.

The tacos are going to have to wait on this latest craving.

Ours is gone now. I don't think we ever got a sandwich in there as we are
not big sandwich lovers. But we did get soup and salad and it was good.

I use to eat a Blimpie 4 or 5 days a week when I was starving musician
in NYC in the 70's. I absolutely loved their sandwiches, which I had
never had before and were very cheap.

A Blimpie opened up nearby, here in SoCal, about 6 years ago and I was
eager to get to it. I was quite unimpressed. I don't know whether it's
me or the chain that has changed in the past 35 years. Probably both.
But I am unimpressed by Subway too.

Jersey Mike's Subs have been opened three stores our here in the past
few years. I think I like the sandwich better, but the selection of
options seems more limited.

There was a Blimpie's in downtown SJ decades ago, before redevelopment, when
the number of restaurants in downtown SJ could be counted on two hands.

I think both Blimpies and a long-established family Mexican place were both
victims of redevelopment. Only Original Joe's survived.

Do NOT ever order an Original Joe's, a dry and tasteless blend of ground beef
and spinach.

Sometimes limited is better. Places that start out with a good business
model often seem to screw things up when they start trying to make and
sell everything under the sun. If you do a few things well and it
works, stick with that.

I absolutely agree with that.

Agreed: And it's key to expansion, I think.

There was a place in Garden Grove run by a Korean woman that spoke no
English. She made dumplings; either pan-fried or steamed. She also had
big bags of them in a freezer that you could get to-go. Anna's Mandu.
Oh jeez it was great. It only lasted about 3 years. I think she had tea
and canned ice tea.

It was in a tiny strip center next to a store that sold local
kimchi. You walked in and there was nothing but big glass-doored coolers
with unlabeled gallon jars of kimchi: just kimchi. Now THAT's a
specialty store.

I never saw any customers In Anna's but us. She had a young Mexican
girl who worked there in the back. She also didn't speak any English
either, and I *know* she didn't speak any Korean. We saw her come back
from lunch one day with a big greasy burger bag.

It reminded me once when I went to a Mexican restaurant with NO ONE in
it. A pizza delivery guy showed up with two pizzas and went into the
kitchen. Me and my friend left. If they won't eat their food--I won't
either!

+100
You should see the menu of many pizzerias here around: endless lists of
dishes for every course, in fact the average qualty is terrible.

Moreover, any restaurants have one great dish and that's it. We went to a
German restaurant for years that made perfect Wiener schnitzel, with great
fried potatoes and cucumber salad, but overcooked vegetables. We eventually
tried all the other dishes, but there was only one winner.

A taqueria I go to makes one burrito that is sublime, but everything
else is meh. People will order a quesadilla and wonder why I like the place.
Stick to the winner I say.
winner I say.

I've not tried their soup, I tend to make my own, maybe when the weather
cools however...

From time to time, I not much of a fan of entering the store (vs the
drive-thru) but some of thier pizza is pretty good, and so is the Original.
Lots of melting cheese and meat.
