LOL! Thanks for sharing that. I especially laughed at this: "Next I
approach the beauty aisle. There is a scary looking machine there that
you put your face inside of and it tells you exactly how ugly you are."

Yep. Whole Foods is always busy here. Always! But what you don't see? A
customer with a full cart. Not even a half full cart. Not ever. Like me,
most people seem to go in to get one or two things that they can't get
elsewhere. Like a vegan donut. And I could live without those.

They also seem to get the people who are in there just to steal food. Like
the guy who salted and ate a hard boiled egg from the salad bar right there
in front of us! Or the ones who get a bowl of food to eat in there.

Yes, they sell Tom's shoes and some clothing but... We have so many other,
better, cheaper places to shop in this area.

PCC is the same concept but smaller. Better produce, no salad bar but
probably as much prepared foods including gelato and hot pizza. Almost
everything they sell is organic and they cater to people with celiac and
food allergies. Much better prices on most things.

Then there is Central Market. They offer the best of both worlds. Cheap
non-organic stuff and mainstream things like Fritos. They also cater to
people with celiac and food allergies and have a salad bar, other food bars
and some prepared food, although perhaps not as much as Whole Foods. They
do not have pizza.

Then there is Granolas. They seem to no longer sell prepared foods although
they did for a little while. Just one small case of them. They do have a
small freezer of vegan and gluten free stuff. And a few aisles of shelf
stable things, mainly for those on a special diet. Mostly they sell
supplements. I do not know how they stay in business. They are within
walking distance of Central Market, even for a disabled person like me.
They sell most of the same things although they do have some books and gift
type items that Central Market does not have.

There is also a Super Supplements close to Whole Foods.

And *all* of the grocery stores are selling more and more gluten free and
organic foods. Winco doesn't have too much in the way of organics but they
do have some. Frankly I am seeing less need to buy organic. I used to be
really big on that but... There is so much crap around us otherwise. It's
in the dirt and the rain water and that's bound to get into the organic
stuff even if the farmer doesn't add anything. *shrugs*

But... There is a small percentage of the population who seems to think if
it is more expensive, it is better. I know people who will buy some sort of
mainstream item, say... Del Monte canned green beans and they will think
they have a better product if they pay $1.89 for a can rather than $1.29 at
some other store. I don't get it.

We have several WF's here in SF, but I haven't seen what you say
you've seen. I also don't see them selling shoes or clothing, like
Walmart or Super Target.

They don't sell a lot. They do sell some Tom's shoes and we've been able to
get the new ones there when they are out at Nordstom. They do not keep a lot
of pairs in the sales floor. We used to assume that was all they had.
Nope. Last time we asked and they had the needed size in the back.

As for the clothing, it is organic and I think there are only a few peghooks
of them. I think they also sell socks. But again, not a lot of them.

PCC has similar clothing but no shoes.

Central Market has a large selection of aprons but AFAIK, that is the only
thing that could be considered clothing.

But they do have carmelita bars. I wouldn't make a special trip
but I always manage to get one or two when I shop there.

Hmmm...there is a WF adjacent to the lobby of my workplace, I will check that out.

I spend a lotta time peeps - watching in the lobby, many of the WH customers eat their pizza and salad bar stuff or whatever there. Me, I still can't really afford WH, have purchased very little there. But I will check out the carmelita bars out per your sugestion...

;-)

There is a senior lunch program where I work, they have coffee and pastries and such before lunch for the "social hour" -- all provided by WH. And at the end of lunch they put out a *huge* spread of WH baked goods (about to expire, they have to get rid of them eventually in any case) for the peeps to take for free, I have scored a LOT of great WH bread 'n stuff that way, lol...

BTW, I am off to Aldi to make a "chocolate run"...they have German chocolate *really* cheap. Gifted a co-worker with some the other day, she said, "OH! That's my very favorite chocolate!.". They have these cute little packs of five mini-bars, makes a lovely little gift - *or* for yourself!

Ha, I have no idea if you like that kind of thing. Oat bar with carmel,
chocolate and nuts. I'm fond of them. They cost $2.29 where I live
(just so happen to have one handy) no matter the size. I guess my store
is too lazy to weigh each piece.

It's not cheap, for sure. They have decent sales and the meats and fish
really are better than other places around here. They have things I
can't find elsewhere that conveniently. Like kombucha tea. Heh.
I like their crackers.

They do have nice bread! Heh. It would certainly be easier for them to
toss it all, so I appreciate that they make the effort.

That is an okay price for a nice treat...will check it out.

Interestingly, a lot of homeless/street people are in the lobby (mostly younger kids, it is a social service agency...), the open entrance between the lobby and the WH is sorta like a "Berlin Wall" of class, a barrier 'twixt the well - off who can shop there and the less well - off who can only ogle the WH victuals on display from afar. It is a *very* interesting "juxtaposition"...and makes for *great* people - watching...!!!

I have sampled pretty much all of their breads...sometimes they put out close to a hundred baked items, attendance at the lunch can run in the 40 - 75 range. It helps out the older folks who are on a budget, a nice gesture fer sure.

Two of my co-workers - part of a lovely group I call "my girls" - washed and ironed and STARCHED some dress shirts for me so I'd look "sharp" during my first days on the job. Can you beat that? So, yeah, I shoot a little chocolate their way now and then..."sweets for the sweets", I say to them...

;-)

[Need I add that I ADORE my co - workers? Very cool, smart, and professional...!!! Sometimes I feel like I'm in a *dream*...]

There's a Whole Foods the next town over. It's a pretty cool place. Ms.
Maclean's WF sounds just awful. The parking lot is as as laid-back and
non-combative/competitive as any that I've seen and there's even free
charging stations for electric cars. What a country!

Working there is good gig to get, I hear. The pay is good and health
benefits are available immediately after you're hired. My daughter's BF
was trying to get a job there. He'd probably fit in nicely but my
understanding is that when the restaurant he works at heard about this,
they promoted him to a chef position. Thanks, Whole Foods.

I am old enough to remember that there was some talk of such a fad. I
see from the linked article that it was a short loved fad. I don't
remember anyone actually buying and wearing the stuff.

I don't, either. But I heard about it. Seems like the fad sprung out
of the "hippie" culture. Recyclable clothing? I call it cotton.

Back in the 6o's I wore disposable paper knickers for travel in the
Sahara.
The material is still commonly used as disposable hospital gowns
here.

LOLOL.

At least green clothing is good for St.Patricks Day.

And speaking of days.... tomorrow (thursday) is Pirate's Day.
Dress like a pirate if you want to be cool.
Arrrrrrrr.

Have you seen the latest pirate movie?
It's rated ARRRRR.

I didn't think about those paper gowns! You're right, they still use
