Sure sounds like. Just hate to give up their independence. Not easy form
family though!

Exactly! Thank you. To me it's a case of Famous Last Words.
Just ask Dave. Oh, it's a simple procedure, next thing you
know you hear Oops.

Think positive thoughts. If she's going to Cornell, the chances will
be slim to none that a problem like Dave's will happen.

Thanks very much. This is a heart thing.

She pretty much lives on tofu and rice, so this is kind of a
surprise.

Particularly if it was white. One of my friends who is now a diabetic had a
stent put in. Actually I think it was more than one. She always ate well.
Her husband manages a grocery store and she herself works at a store with a
grocery department. She eats tons of salad and other good, wholesome foods
but her downfall was Pepsi. Regular Pepsi. She would easily drink 6, 2
liter bottles a day. Why she was not any larger than she was, is beyond me.
Not thin, but not obese either. Just a little overweight. We always told
her that Pepsi would come back to haunt her. That's what excess carbs can
do. Particularly of the refined nature.

Weaning herself from the Pepsi was hard for her to do but necessary for the
diabetes.

Thank you both, I will tell my mother that and to ask her
doctor.

Being Japanese, she thinks rice is what you eat.

Thanks very much, and I apologize to Nan, I didn't mean to

I don't even remember if I told her that people seem to like
the Heart Association cookbook. Think I did.

As always, it is what you are raised eating. I think it might be an awful

I think that's the way it is with things that aren't good for you,
especially carbs/sugar. You crave them.

The Dr. is going to tell her to add vegetables... lots of them. Hubby
had to cut way back on his white rice intake and learn to like brown
rice. I still make white occasionally when brown would be weird with
what I'm serving, but it's brown rice, half of a small potato, quinoa
or Israeli couscous for everyday eating now. He doesn't like them as
much as he likes white rice (when I make it, it's medium grain - which
he doesn't like as much as he likes long grain), so it's easier for
him to limit his amounts without feeling deprived.

She won't have to stop it completely, just change the type she uses
everyday and cut back on the amount. Ask dsi1 what a typical amount
of rice is for Hawaiians to eat and that's pretty much the case for
Japanese and Pacific Islanders too.

I know people for whom rice is a native staple. But they no longer eat it
like they used to. Now they eat it more like a condiment. Just a few bites
with the meal.

Just looked. They have lots of cookbooks for sale online and several
sample recipes from each book. I see carbs and fat, so it's not a
deprivation diet - it's the same common sense approach dietitians
teach people in person. Googling, it looks like your mom might be
told to add omega-3 rich fish like tuna, mackerel, and salmon to her
diet too.

She really doesn't need advice from a land whale like you.

Default New Diet?

thank you Ed for the good suggestions. Actually I haven't changed much in our food repetoire. Most of it was pretty healthy, and his cholesterol is low. I am just using less salt, and we are adjusting our taste buds, altho I was not a big salter to start with. I was pretty Panicced when I wrote that first post, but am quite relieved now as he is doing well. Now that the kids have gone home and the holiday is over, we can get back to some semblance of normalcy.

I think we will do fine. We got a bare bones list of foods to avoid and eat in moderation when we left the hospital.

The drink is out. This whole thing was caused by him quitting drinking cold turkey. Drs say he shocked his heart. They also said alcohol is a cardiac toxin!! So we're both on the wagon from now on, and that's ok!! Maybe I will lose some weight too.

Thanks for your suggestions and encouragement.
