Who wanted to see something I got "to go" from the Club?

This is what I ate for Thanksgiving dinner. It's one of the meals I
bought last month to stash in the freezer.

http://s1342.photobucket.com/user/ji...854f7.jpg.html

Osso bucco made with lamb shanks. (Yeah, yeah, should be veal shanks,
get over it. I love lamb shanks.) I added some white cheddar to the
potato gratin because it was rather bland. Those three puny spears of
grilled asparagus are the green vegetable side.

The lamb was delicious. It was a whole lamb shank. I had to take it
off the bone to fit it into the divided freezer plate. Not hard to do
as it was falling off the bone already.

IMO it'd be better with the lamb shanks anyway...

Yes, I did! The lamb was tasty. The potatoes needed a small boost but
no big deal.

I find it interesting this is (for now) a permanent item on the menu in
the Pub Room. Chef Penn Ten Eyck claims to try to use fresh, local
ingredients whenever possible. That's great! It's also funny, since
this isn't lamb/sheep country. I'm not sure but I don't think there are
asparagus farmers around here, either.

I did some searching. Apparently our chef is more interested in
pastries. He's classified as a pastry chef at a restaurant in Beaufort
(the main town near where I live).

http://www.zoominfo.com/p/Penn-Eyck/1860191945

Perhaps he's thinking of moving on to his true passion. Me, I never
order dessert.

Shouldn't have posted a picture, the trio of asparagus look sad, very
sad. The potatoes look like old dried puke. And that meat looks like
a diseased vagina.

Beats me. I do remember my father always bitching about the constant
changing of chefs and menus. I could not guess what that chef is being
paid. He may well have two jobs. Maybe not. It's speculation.

The meat does look a bit obscene in that pic. :-)

I've been wanting to try making lamb osso buco... there is also a pork
version of osso buco from what I've read. Osso buco translates as
"hole in the bone" - so using a different beast isn't blasphemy, IMO.

Probably just used to make it sound more attractive like 'pan fried' etc.
Probably doesn't think anyone will remember all that))

That would be me and I thank you for doing so. A description is nice
but a picture added is always nicer. I hope you didn't plate that just
for a picture and then put in your freezer container. Next time take a
pic of the meal in the container they send home with you. They must
use a divided container as I don't see any of the meat juice on the
potatoes or asparagus.

Oh ok...so you ate that one. Unlike other comments here, it looks and
sounds very tasty to me. My only criticism is that they're a bit
stingy with the asparagus. heheh IMO, 5-6 spears would have been more
appropriate.

I looked up a recipe to see how it was made. Sounds nice to me and
better using lamb rather than veal. Please send more in the future.
Pay no attention to the bad comments from the peanut gallery
here....they had fun cutting it down. Sounds like we all enjoyed your
picture. :-D

what is wrong is a restaurant calling their dish simply "osso bucco" without
specifying if the meat is other than veal.

I never do either. A good meal can stand alone and be satisfying.
Same thing with drinking wine. Good as a separate activity but TIAD to
serve with a good dinner.

He posts food pics often enough. He seems to think everyone should
otherwise he calls us LIARS. So I took a picture. What the heck...
it's food I brought home in a take-out container, repackaged in a
divided freezer plate and froze. Then thawed, reheated and plated. I
don't see how anyone could expect it to look like a work of art.

Oh take no notice. You didn't even cook it anyway, you told us it came from

He does, often.

I'm making chicken vegetable noodle soup today. It tastes very good
and is very healthy. It's cooling on the back porch right now. I'll
take a pic and give the basic recipe later today or tommorrow.

I've often wondered why people take pictures of food they're eating in a
restaurant. All they did was order it. LOL I don't carry a camera
around with me. The point of the meal, whether at home or in/from a
restaurant, isn't to capture it in a photo. It's all about whether or
not you enjoyed the food.

the turkey stew I just made for the dog is out there on the concrete
of the front walk to cool -- Mama raccoon and her babies had better
not mess with it.

LOL! Sorry...the raccoon ran off when I went outside to take a pic.
But here is two pics of the darn soup. (links below)

I started with a base of concentrated homemade chicken broth.
To that I added:
- 2 bay leaves
- some tarragon
- some thyme
- lots of basil
- little bit of s&p

Fresh veggies we
- 2 chopped sweet potatoes
- 3 very long carrots, chopped
- 2 chopped onions
- one medium potato, chopped small
- one roma tomato
- a good wedge of chopped cabbage

Frozen veggies:
- about 1/2 cup of frozen corn
- 16 oz package of frozen mixed vegetables

At the end I threw in noodles only from 2 ramen soup packs. I was out
of egg noodles that I usually add.

Here's the soup cooling on the back porch.
http://i40.tinypic.com/1z706qo.jpg

Then I brought it inside and poured it into a large pyrex bowl so you
could see it better.

The soup is delicious and I hope this story amuses you all. )

I love cabbage in vegetable soup! Your soup sounds just right for a
November weekend. Crackers or cornbread?

No. The point is that if you describe a meal, then a pic is a nice
enhancement.

Well, I'm glad you feel you got SOME return on your 800 a year or whatever it is.

Nothing like freshly steamed asparagus tho, huh. That DOES look pretty weak.

Yes, Gary, I get that. I'm just not sure why anyone should care about
pictures of food prepared by someone else. All I did was thaw and
reheat it.

A cup of the soup with a slice of fresh buttered white bread.

It was allegedly grilled asparagus. Pretty puny, eh? Thank you so much
for THREE spears! LOLOL

At least the lamb tasted quite nice. As did the potato gratin after I
added a little crumbled white NY cheddar and some pepper before
reheating it.

Thank you! No, I don't have a cellar full of wine. That was the day I
got my car out of the shop. By the time I got home the overpriced wine
sale was over.
