Normally vegetable oil, canola oil, peanut oil.
Deep frying, either in a deep fryer or just in a dedicated saucepan,
doesn't make much of a mess at all.

I agree and I use vegetable oil in mine too. I have an electric deep fryer
which I think is much safer.

Their are benefits to some "deprivations".

Likely relates to the user: I can make a mess eating a bowl of cereal.

I no longer deep fry at home, I go out to eat deep fried food, much
safer. I actually see no reason for a deep fryer at home... most
anything that's deep fried can be cooked otherwise with almost as good
results and sometimes better. I'm not a big fan of french fries
anyway, and there are dozens of kinds in the frozen food aisle, most
exactly the same as served in restos. But I much prefer roasted
potatoes; thinly sliced into wedges, lightly coated with oil, and oven
roasted till golden and puffed like pillows makes excellent potatoes,
much better than deep fried. I also like pan fried potatoes, half
inch diced and slowly pan fried until browned and crispy. And anyway
most young folks today have never eaten a real french fried potato to
compare, all they've ever eaten are reconstituted dehys, extruded
frozen fries. Sadly there are very few eateries today that that deep
fry real potatoes.

Trailer Park Boys, episode 4 (act 2) - "The ****in' Way She Goes"

Later that night, the barbeque is in full swing. Julian, Ray, Bubbles,
Cory, and Trevor visit a strip joint. Sarah takes Trinity home and
Lucy and Ricky hang out. Ricky burns some potates and goes inside
Ray's trailer to make french fries. Then Ricky and Lucy drive off in
the shitmobile, leaving the grease pot on the stove. It catches fire.

I make fries with fresh potatoes and I prepare good cod with beer batter and
my husband says they are better than in any eatery. I agree so I am happy
to make them. I certainly don't deep fry everything or even every day.
Just good fish and chips))

That is one of the funniest shows ever. I had a hard time watching it
the first few times because of the profanity... almost every second
word... really. Then I realized how funny the whole thing was.

Never could stand any of those characters, the show and the whole atmosphere of the series.

I use canola oil. I know, deep fried is lard or some other fat.

No. Deep frying is any kind of oil that is deep.

Those are 2 of my favorite ways to cook potatoes but I limit the fried
ones to about once a month or less. Roasted are delicious.

Yup, roasted spuds are far better than fried:

Not really. You can't beat good fried potatoes.

I like them both but I really have to be in the mood for fried. Tonight we
had some faux Tater Tots. I baked them rather than fried although it was
apparent from the dark color that they had been fried prior. I will not
cheap out on these things again. I paid something like $1.34 for these when
the real ones were $2.54. These didn't taste right and they didn't taste
very good. Nor did they get crisp like Tater Tots will, even when baked.

I really don't eat potatoes much anymore at all, but I do know what you mean
with the cheapies compared to Tater Tots.

Arrghh! Cheri! You don't eat potatoes much anymore? How could you
skip those? Or maybe you diabetes and are forced to?

I did buy generic tater tots once and they didn't taste good at all so
now I only buy the official (TM) ones. It's sw's fault that I even
eat them now. My daughter loved them as a young child so I would make
them for her. I rarely had any. But once he mentioned it, I bought
some for myself and found that I like them.

Yes, I am forced to (by me) with the DM, but...there are many other things
to eat. Luckily I do like cauliflower cooked all ways. :-)

Show me. I bet the best fried potatoes you've ever eaten came with a
Happy Meal. LOL

Looks pretty good, but I'd want to eat freshly fried fish immediately. Seems like the batter would be soggy if reheated etc., no?

Why do you detest tartar sauce?

Not if you reheat it in the oven when you get home. It's not as if I
waited for *days* to reheat it.

> Why do you detest tartar sauce?

I dislike mayonnaise. To be fair, I did dip a finger in it and taste
it, thinking maybe my tastes have changed. Nope. I still don't like
tartar sauce.

I'm not fond of the usual condiments in general: Mustard, mayo,
ketchup. As far as seafood goes, I'm not a dipper. Give me a
sprinkling of malt vinegar for the fish & chips.

I *do* use mayo in cooking. For example, when I make salmon patties.
The recipe calls for sour cream but I don't usually have that on hand.
It's only about a Tablespoon and mayo is an acceptable substitute. But
I dislike things where mayonaisse is the primary ingredient.

I'm actually a good cook, and I ain't ascared to post pictures of my
cooking. People like Dave Smith are phonies, he's never
cooked anything other than with his keyboard.

Your pics of the food you cook definitely look good, but seriously, pictures
do not mean it tastes good, just means it looks good. I do imagine your food
is good. I imagine Dave is a good cook too.

I think for 2014 I'll make a resolution not to take any photos of what
I've cooked. You're pretty much damned if you do and damned if you
don't.

Don't worry Jill. You are not quick to call other people a liar and I
assume that is because you are honest. If you say you cooked something
I will believe you.... unless you say you made your own phyllo pastry ;-)

LOLOL! I actually looked at some frozen phyllo the last time I was at
the grocery store. Sure, I could make Spanikopita. Or a sweet like
Baklava. Not going to happen. Even with prepared phyllo/filo, those
are the types of things I leave to people who have been making them for
years.

That's RFC for you. You can't put yourself in a position to be
criticized if you're thin skinned. <shrug> Those who do (criticize)
are those who "don't" (cook - even if they claim they do) - and they
are not worth a second thought.
