Default The Dataw Closeout Sale Dec. 31, 2013

They're calling it the "Quick Stop 'n Shop". Tomorrow is the last
chance to have food/beverage items applied to the 2013 Dining Minimum.
Available for purchase in the lobby of the Club House from 10AM-3PM:

Drink Tokens [applied to the 2013 minimum but may be used in 2014.]
Chicken Noodle Soup (Quart) $20
Kansas City Steak Soup (Quart) $20
French Onion Soup (Quart) $20
Tomato Basil Soup (Quart) $20 [note, they *really need a proof-reader.
This was typed 'Tomato Basi Soupl' in the email LOL]
Clam Chowder (Quart) $22
Corn & Chicken Chowder (Quart) $22
Apple Pie $24
Pecan Pie $24
Assorted Wines and Champagnes (priced per bottle)

I don't know how this is set up. Not that I'm planning to pay $20 for a
quart of soup, but I can't quite picture the arrangement.

Surely they don't have quart containers of soup sitting on tables in the
lobby for five hours. There's no room for them to set up stations to
keep all those pots of soup hot in the lobby, either. I also wonder,
how *old* are those $24 pies? (Most likely frozen, right?) I'm really
curious so I'll call tomorrow to ask for particulars.

Aye! Can any of those things be applied to the dining minimum?? The booze
sounds good if so)
The soups might be if they are not kept just warm!

I didn't think you were a drinker.

Yes, that's the list of things any member may purchase tomorrow and it
will apply to this year's minimum.

> The soups might be if they are not kept just warm!

I'll admit I'm confused about the number of soups. Did they make all
these soups just for us to use up our dining minimum? Doubtful (I'm a
cynic). I'll give them a call. Just to ask a few questions. No point
in wasting gasoline to drive over and look at something I'm not going to
buy. Well, maybe a bottle of wine.

Send me a check, pay for dried ice packaging and shipping. I'll be glad
to drive to the Club and pick up whichever you want. Quanities are

I don't blame you. I thought about buying some premium soups sold in one
liter jars (darned close to a quart) but lost interest when I saw that
they were charging $6.95 for it. You are being charged almost three
times what I thought was too much.

The corner bakery sells really nice pies for $12. They are made with a
butter pastry and do not use canned fillings.

I am curious to see what you learn. At least they are making some attempt
to let people not completely waste their unused DMs.

Not exactly. She has to spend a certain amount per year. By charging
outrageous prices for the soup they are really putting the screws to the
resident/members.

I understand that. But it is either get some soup, or get nothing. The DMs
are already set and she is stuck with the situation. So, on December 31,
the soup is free.

Okay... the force them to pay a minimum amount.... and then then they
gouge them.... $20 for a quart of soup???? We are going to force you to
spend a minimum amount of money, but we aren't going to give you a
decent amount.

Bottom line: Did you manage to use up your yearly fee with food

Given the outrageous price of the soup, I would hate to imagine the
markup they have on the wine?

Looks like you need to start in January and have a plan to either "use
x amount by this time" or treat your neighbor to lunch.

You do what you have to do in order to not just hand them the cash.

Sure, I'd rather have some food to stash in the freezer. For the 2013
assessment, the items on the list are the *only* items that will still
apply to the current year. $20 for a quart of soup sticks in my craw.

Maybe the chef is following the Hogmanay tradition and is cleaning out
the freezer.

Yes, I'll have to plan on that. My neighbor won't let me treat her to
lunch... she has to use up her assessment, too!

Jill

~~~~~~~~
I would grab some of that soup if I understand their system correctly. You
have to pay even if you don't eat, don't you? So, if it isn't actually
costing any extra, I would get some soup and freeze it in individual
meal-size containers at home. I would guess that they will put soup into
quart containers after you arrive. Hope so!
Liquor laws must be different there. Licensed bars here cannot sell
alcohol to go. I wonder what sort of cheap wine they offer there that it
cannot be cellared until the next season.
Those soup prices remind me of an experience I had the last time I went
to a local winery restaurant. I had sticker shock at the prices. Bear
in mind this was probably at least 10 years ago...... $14.95 for a bowl
of vegetable soup. What the hell could go into vegetable soup that would
make it worth $14.95 a bowl?
2014 will only be worse than 2013, O. Fact and out of my control. We
had a great Christmas with the kids in Duluth. LaKid is 12 and a nice
kid. We had Chris with us by way of Apple's FaceTime and it was a kick:
"Sam, move Uncle Chris over there so he can watch Dad open his gift."
"Sam, turn Uncle Chris towards Grrr." It was almost as good as having
him with us IRL. Peace and prosperity to you and yours. I think of
you more often than I act on it, believe me.
The law probably isn't the same because she took a bottle home once before.
shouldn't you have at least bought up wine or any food? As someone
here said, it would be "free" since you have to pay anyway. I can't
believe you just didn't buy something to reach that limit that you
have to pay for. That makes no sense to me.
Silly prices but....You could have had them both for free but you
chose to pay the fee anyway and get nothing. WTH? Are your roots
blonde?
Something is seriously wrong with this story. I refuse to believe that
Jill is that stupid to pay for hundreds of dollars worth of food and
not get any of it...or at least drinks for the next year. WTF?
How does paying $20 for a quart of soup that you didn't even get feel
to your craw?
G.
You get your butt down to that restaurant and buy up all of your food
allotment before it's too late tonight. Why in the world would you
willingly pay for it and not get the food? My freezer would be packed
with overpriced pies, soup, meals....and enough kaiser rolls to last
for 6 months. heheh
I went there around 2:00 this afternoon. They were all out of soup
except for Chicken Noodle. Sorry, I'm still not paying $20 for chicken
noodle soup. I did buy three bottles of chardonnay to stash away.
I bought a bottle of wine when I went there for lunch earlier this
month. Today I picked up three bottles of wine for my 'cellar'.
The thing is I don't really enjoy eating restaurant food.
