Default I hit the jackpot at Smart & Final!

I've been complaining about not being able to buy Sara Lee English
muffins at any of the major and local grocery chains + mom & pop
stores in my area. Someone (probably in my local usenet group)
mentioned before Christmas that I could find it at Smart & Final, so I
made a note of it. Then I was trying to find True Lemon, but the
stores I went to or called only carried True Lemon Lemonade, but
someone posted a link to where I could actually check to see which
True Lemon product was carried by my local stores and once again,
Smart & Final was the hero... so I went today and by golly they had
BOTH in stock! Ca-Ching! The icing on the cake was in the spice
aisle... they have a 4 different peppercorns mix (not listed
individually by name, but a visual count) : black, white, green and
pink.... 8 oz for less than $7. http://oi40.tinypic.com/2hci0c5.jpg

That's interesting. I would try that if I could access it here at a
store. Have you had it before? How does it compare to plain black
peppercorns?

Times like this make me realize that things in southern California must be
expensive. We can get similar (imported) quality peppercorn mix here for
half that price ;-)

Anyway, looks great, hope you enjoy it!

It's pretty pepper, that's all. If you don't have a clear pepper
grinder (I have several), don't waste your money on multi colored
peppercorns.

That was downright cheap for a non-internet price! Here is the first
hit from Amazon (there's only one left, so hopefully you'll be able to
see they want almost $20 for 8oz - which is par for the course at
grocery stores here).
http://www.amazon.com/Swissmar-Multi.../dp/B000OJ3LY4

The cost of land, labor and housing (where $500,000+, 800 square foot
shacks in need of extensive remodeling are not uncommon) have
something to do with it. We often pay more where I live because we
can afford to pay more and the market will bear it. If I stand on the
right "hill", I can see oil refineries across the Bay without using a
pair of binoculars and yet I live in one of the two most expensive
gasoline markets in the nation. <shrug> That's life. I choose to
live where I live, not because the cost of living is cheap - but
because I like it here.

I can get a lot of regular things at Cash and Carry (Smart and Final)
that I can't find in my supermarkets. The nice thing is that it is on
route to my regular Winco. C&C is where I tour the aisles.

The pink peppercorns we've got in a pepper mill taste *conspicuously*
different than mainstream black peppercorn. It's not even a
peppercorn; I think it's a kind of berry.

The white pepper (though I've never had it whole for grinding)
certainly tastes different to me, but in a dish it's still just pepper.

Costco in Canada will sell 580g peppercorn mix for $16.00 so i imagine
that's cheaper in the US. 580g is 20.5 ounces according to google.
I've never seen a coupon for it though.

it's 4 colour too, but the white peppercorns do indeed seem to be the
least in the container.

Housing is absurdly high in So Cal. That's why you hear of some ppl making an ungodly 2 hour each way commute to work.

Try Hawaii if you REALLY wanna see a high cost of living.

That product doesn't list the ratio of peppercorns and you have no
idea of quality or how ancient.

I blend my own... I have several pepper mills, each with a different
peppercorn... or you can make up your own blend.

Americans may use a different ounce than the Commonwealth so I dunno if
I converted grams to ounces right.

Needless to say check Costco for peppercorn mix if its a place you stop
by from time to time

I did exactly that! Love going up and down their aisles.

It's off the beaten track for me, but as I said above, they remodeled
just before Christmas and it's gorgeous... you could even call it
upscale. Their property is next to a shopping center that has a Lucky
store in it and I go to Lucky when I want lamb because they stock
American lamb, not NZ or Aus. They also have beef flap meat at a not
too heart stopping price - in fact, the entire meat section is enough
different from the dozen+ Safeway stores I have nearer to me to make
the trip worth it every now and then. Anyway, I think the newly
remodeled Smart & Final will end up having a symbiotic relationship
(each helps the other) with Lucky's in the same sense that one of the
Trader Joe's near my house has with a Safeway in the same shopping
center: go there to shop at one and make it a twofer.

Believe me, I've tried Costco and looked again within the last couple
of weeks but there was none to be found. Not even a shelf tag during
the Christmas season.

Your reality isn't mine. First of all, a four color mix is not
commonly found at my grocery stores these days and all of the multi
color mixes *here* are heavy on the black peppercorns (mainly black
peppercorns with a spot of another color here or there and no green,
ever), so I was particularly excited to see how well balanced the mix
I found was. <shrug>

When you have to drive 4 hours a day it certainly bumps the cost of
living by an extravagant amount. I love how the official inflation
rate in the US is defined by first removing the cost of food and fuel.
It certainly makes the number more tidy.

Hey you have to take things when you find them. There's no value in
touring the town to check something out and then going back to the
original place. If you are satisfied with what you see, you want it,
you can afford it, get it then. Anyway, that's my motto.

If memory serves me right, she doesn't live in southern California,
she's in San Francisco.

Unlike certain people here who think the earth revolves around them,
I don't expect someone who lives half way around the world and hasn't
checked in here for months to remember a detail like that. I figured
you were doing well enough to remember I lived on the West Coast.
Yes, coastal California is very expensive, even in rural areas.
Everybody wants to live on or near the coast and they can afford it:
first homes, second homes and vacation properties, Open space:
viticulture, lumber and even some real pasture land is protected by
the state or else the entire California coast would have been wall to
wall housing developments as of 30-40 years ago.

Coastal towns are more expensive here [South Africa] too for most food
stuffs - and property, because the climate is temperate year round. Only
thing I can think of that's slightly cheaper here on the coast is petrol
(gasoline) - because (most of) it arrives via those huge tankers...

Anyway, seems clear to me you enjoy living where you do - more power to
you!
