Tried to look it up and someone said Cliff Smith. Another person said it wasn't Smith. Still another said Craig and Craig sounds familiar. But still another says Craig is now a counselor for abused kids. I know there were allegations but was anything ever proven? And I hope that Craig (if that was his name) was not abused. I am just even more confused now! I also loved the Two Hot Tamales and that one older guy who was a Cajun chef. He was funny! |

Most of them have adopted some of the worst aspects of "reality" shows, but sticking in a bunch of drama queens. There is usually someone whose mother or sister has just died and they fake a few teats while saying they are going to win it to make their recently deceased proud of them. I used to like the dinner party shows until the contestants got too weird, snooping through peoples closets and learning that they are cross dressers and crap like that. In one show there was a contestant who had never cooked before. Rather than bombing and being taken off the air, there were clones of the show. |

> Top Chef and TC Masters are all on Bravo, not the FN or Cooking Channel. I mentioned them as significant references to cooking-as-competition. I think they were the earliest and most successful, and inspired the conversion of many other shows: "So you think you can cook" and "so you want to be a FN star" and "world's worst cook" and some of that other claptrap. I liked another competitive show "The Restaurant" (I gather from a wiki article) from Britain that featured a French cook, Raymond Blanc as the MC/judge. I thought it was named something else when it appeared in the US. Anyway, in this competition a couple are given an opportunity to open their own restaurant and are slowly "voted off the island" by their performance. The winner gets to open a restaurant with Blanc. It was damned interesting, though much of the interest had to do with the machinations involved with running a restaurant: Purchasing, effective use of resources, menu planning, efficiency of service, and making a profit. Very little could be said to be about cooking, per se. It was damned entertaining, but after a while the competition were so hapless and incompetent, as with several seasons of Hell's Kitchen, that the show didn't really offer anything of value regarding either cooking or rooting for a particular participant. I play guitar and other musical instruments and when I'm not actually playing, I like reading books about music, pursuing repertoire, reading guitar methods, learning unrelated instruments, and other "non-playing" type stuff. I think it helps keep my mind in that world even when I'm not doing it per se. Similarly I like shows that *relate to cooking* even though they are not recipe production shows. That said, many of these shows are pitiful by any measure of entertainment. |

He's not that old. I believe I first saw him around maybe 1996 or so. And it was the very early days of Food TV when they had no budget to speak of. Back then they mostly played reruns of Julia Child and Graham Kerr. I remember they were so desperate they had a nobody cooking instructor on doing a French pastry show with a Swizz guest chef who looke dlike he just got off the plane. The "host" kept butting in and trying to add ingredients and the chef kept batting his hand away. It was hilarious. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! The earliest show I remember that featured him was on PBS in 1993. It was over the airwaves because my city wasn't wired for cable back then (why it took so long when all the surrounding areas had it, I don't know). In any case, he made Shrimp etouffee and a Louisiana crab & crawfish boil. I remember it because I'd never heard of etouffee before and I'd never seen a propane burner like that. http://video.pbs.org/video/1094273768/ -- "Corporations aren't people, they're Republicans" (Rev Al Sharpton 10/7/2011) |

I'm pretty sure I'm missing at least one, but I bought what I was interested in owning and ended up with a collection - not because I'd set out to, it just ended up that way. -- "Corporations aren't people, they're Republicans" (Rev Al Sharpton 10/7/2011) |

Cable wasn't invented then? We had cable when I was 8! So like 46 years it was around. Was the show older than that? |
