Default Best mandoline under $100

I want a mandoline. Anthony B swears by 'em and I want to make my
own sweet potato chips. I had a Farberware V-slicer and it was junk.
I'll pay good $$$$ for a good product, but I don't have $300! Any
recomendations for a < $100 all SS mandy. No, I won't buy an Oxo or
Benriner. What say ye?

from HMart Asian Market.

Hmmmm......

My Cuisinart comes with a 2mm slicer. They make a 1mm "ultra-thin"
slicer, but only fer huge 25 C commercial models. Dya think if I fed
yams/sweettaters into the 2mm slicer with very little feed pressure,
they'd come out thin enough fer chips? I'll be deep frying in peanut
oil.

Just out of curiosity, why _not_ OXO? I've been satisfied with all my OXO
purchases, including my mandoline. Is there something I don't know about
OXO, like maybe they use forced child labor in Botswanaland to produce
their product?

My Magimix came with a set of different thickness slicer discs,
graters (different sizes) and a julienne stripper.

Some pics here of what it can do in seconds

I really, really recommend Magimix.. my first one lasted 30 years.

OXO is a very mixed bag for me. Many of the "Good Grips" items I bought
wound up getting "mushy" connects to the handles after only a short time. I
know I am not the only one who had this problem. My dad bought a set for my
aunt and she complained of the same thing. Not sure who made my mandoline
but it may well have been OXO. I just looked and am pretty sure that is it.
Although I bought it a couple of years ago it is very similar to if not
exactly this one:

http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Hand...=oxo+mandoline

I can't remember for sure what it looks like because I was all thumbs when I
tried to use it. Daughter fared much better with it but even she had some
trouble with the potatoes because they tended to slip out of her hands. I
wound up using a knife.

I offered a Bron for about $100 in perfect condition here about six
months ago, before our move, and got no takers.

heh heh....

No, it's jes been my experience their products are rubbish. I
recently tossed an Oxo veggie peeler and an Oxo pizza cutter is cheap
junk I wouldn't pay eight cents for. Perhaps the older stuff was
better, but the crappy stuff I've seen would probably benefit from
some forced labor in Botswanaland.

Likewise. Still, I use my FP more than I used to. Grinds meat
perfectly. Semi-freeze, then chop. Perfect burger. While I also use
a knife for cole slaw (unless I'm gonna do a lot), my FP has been
perfect for deviled ham, which is now my mainstay snack.

I used my first one so seldom, I gave it to my daughter when I moved.
I use my new one much more often. I need to work on some patés.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

My box grater has one side that makes perfect slices as fast as you
can stroke... three blades so three slices each stroke... would be
perfect for sweet potato chips. I use it a lot for cuke salad, and
makes quick work of carrots too. I have no need for a mandoline,
whatever I need I can do with a knife or my box grater... it's a lot
safer to slice sweet potatoes with a chefs knife, and just as fast as
a mandoline. As an aside, graters are stamped so there is always a
burr on the cutting edges... a few minutes with a jeweler's file fixes
that.

Most home cooks buy an expensive mandoline and for for what, most
times it sits idle, then the one time a year it's used it slices the
tip off a finger.

All I need for chips is this:
http://i44.tinypic.com/102w28m.jpg
Produces chips three at a time as fast as I can stroke. I use it
often for cuke salad and makes fast work of carrots. It makes 1/16"
thk slices, you don't want sweet potato chips any thinner or they'll
burn.

How would I get started growing herbs and/or spices inside? I'm not a
plant person. Truth be told, I'm a plant murderer. Despite all my good
intentions I overwater or starve them or ignore them to death.

I would love to be able to grow some stuff to use in cooking. I could
have a huge garden outside, but I've never done that and can't imagine
starting now. I'd love to learn more about growing inside. TIA.

The only thing I don't have luck with is basil.

Good luck. I won't use one they scare the heck out me. I'm pretty good with a knife and that will have to do.

However, it's true that once proficient there's no replacement for a good mandolin.

I remember reading a joke on this subject many years ago. I believe it
was on this group, but I can't say for sure. But, in light of the
current thread I think it can stand repeating.

Went something like this: "I bought myself a new mandolin but every
time I try to play it my fingers get shorter".

Sorry ;-).

Well, be that way then. :-P I'm quite happy with my Benriner -- I
bought it at an Asian market maybe three years ago. Works fine. Maybe
$30. And who is Mandy? You holding out on us, NB?

I should be so lucky!

So ....1mm equals .040". I jes miked a buncha crinkle cut sweet
potato chips. Most are about .040-.070", or about 1.5mm at their thickest. I think if
I feed a yam --lightly!-- into a 2mm FP slicer, I should get about 1.5mm
slices. We'll see.

I'm not allowed to have a mandoline. If I went out and bought one, my
husband would probably return it.

I do a good enough job on my fingers with a knife.
