We are still adjusting her medication. Her numbers were low so we
cut the meds in half and then she went too high so we'll try it at
3/4 dose and see what that gives.

On the plus side, it looks like our diabetic cat (Kita's youngest
daughter) is in remission after six or more years on insulin. If
all goes well, she will be off insulin in a month or two.

Nothing can beat this little guy. But he needs some oven mitts.

I have one like that, too. Shrimp or crabs, he's not picky. I had my
parents over one time and had peeled steamed shrimp on the table and he
kept jumping up to get some, to the horror of my dad. It was impossible
to keep him away so I had to give him his own portion in a bowl in the
kitchen to keep him away but even when he gobbled those down he was back
looking for more. He must be limited because he'll eat enough to get
sick if left to himself.

I have one countertop I allow them to jump to if they want to watch
cooking, but it's opposite the stove and nothing is hot there unless I'm
using the toaster oven. Honestly, they don't jump up there often but if
I'm in the kitchen for a long time, of course they will be curious.

You have a good instinct. Cats do so much better as far as behavior
when they have something that is just theirs. I use the same tactic to
keep them from scratching furniture. they have their own things to
scratch and go nuts on and they use them.

Baloney. I have always owned animals, and I have children and grandchildren
too. I didn't let any of them wander around on top of my counters and
tables, and they all had/have very good lives.

Funny video! I have to wonder why they had chicken nuggets in the

I suspect they're like a guy I used to work with (what I'd call a real
techie-type). He had web-cams in his house and the back yard (he had a
dog door, don'tcha know) so he could see what his dog was up to when he
was at work. They probably were at home, just watching on the monitor
in another room.

According to the comment(s) posted by the owner/slave on youtube, he is
actually a she - named Lucy.

Enjoyed the video very much - and thank goodness my dogs were both napping
when I viewed it ;-)

They said it had happened before and somehow the roast got out of the oven
so they set it up to see what happened.

Glad to hear they are on the improve, I'm guessing the remission in
diabetes is due to diet?

I feed my girls a mixture of raw meats (with kelp granules mixed in)
and keep them off any dry cat food.

It would appear that a good number of cats go into remission but I'm not
sure anybody really knows why. Diet would not be the primary cause. More
likely, the cat is on insulin long enough that its pancreas kicks back in.
The numbers indicate she is now producing enough insulin on her own.

Well that's good news and I'm pleased to hear that a pancreas can in
fact get back to producing insulin like that.

I hope you have that cat off all dry food. Get the cat on low-carb wet food. I got mine off insulin after two months of Friskies Pate.

She's on a special high-protein diet. She has not had regular cat food in
ages (except what she can cadge from the other cats' bowls). The vet
recommended a dry food (also special diet) but we only used a pinch on her
morning meal and occasionally a small amount when she was still hungry
later on in the day.

Lately we have gone with a chicken and brown rice dry food for the morning
pinch as the other stuff costs an arm and a leg, but she is still on the
special wet food for the time being. Of course the other cats like the dry
food too.

Oh dear. I never thought she was. You were talking about her medical
issues ...

I'm not a vet, but I'd steer clear of any type of dry food (as Kalmia
suggests). Also pay attention to 'wet' cat food, as they often add
starch.

I know it's not convenient, but I make up my own food for my two girls
- a combination of raw beef, horse, possum and wallaby with some kelp
granules added. Took a while before my older cat would eat it, but now
theres no stopping her and now she doesnt like canned cat food

When my cat started exhibiting diabetic symptoms, I took her completely
off high carb kibble, and switched her to 9 Lives canned, and within a
day she had improved drastically. Cata are obligate carnivores, and
should not be fed grain based foods.

Choose only foods that are 10% or less calories from carbs.

Just like idiots on this NG keep stuffing themselves with starch and
shooting up insulin, people do the same thing to their cats.

Agreed. Also applies to us Hoomans (to a lesser degree).

Exactly.
The sooner you guys get rid of corn subsidies, the better too.
