What are apricot Kernels? Are they the pits (stones)? "Common knowledge"

It doesn't look like apricot kernels are absolutely necessary, so
switch them to almonds and proceed. I am going to try that recipe,
but I see no reason why I should add nuts to the marinade. I'll just
use them as a garnish - if I use them at all.

On can consume a small amount of apricot kernels. They were frequently
combined with almonds in old recipes. HOWEVER, this recipe does not
give specific amounts. Therefore, I would consider it too risky to
proceed with it.
