(Same thing with driving all over to shop at different grocery stores... not that I've ever lived in a place with a glut of grocery stores and specialty shops.) Back in the day the pump jockeys also used to check the oil and wash your windows. When I lived in one area just outside the Memphis city limits (circa 1995), there was a gas station on the corner. It had a full serve and a self serve island. Your choice. The full-serve had one those hoses you run over, it rings a bell to alert the attendant. Remember those? Ding ding! This "gas station" also had two service garage bays. They did oil changes, patched tires, etc. I can't say I've seen any place like it in years. Jill |

Studies have shown that the bottom of a woman's purse has more bacteria and germs in general than a toilet.
It doesn't matter how often a restaurant floor is swept; what about what is carried in on the bottom of people's shoes? My God, think about what has been on the sidewalks, parking lots and streets! N. |

I've been using one constantly since I was 12 and prior to that, most of the time my mom made me carry a little one or a clutch. I can't get Angela into the habit of carrying one unless we go shopping but... At school she has a giant backpack with lots of pockets and in high school they are allowed to bring them into the classrooms. Not sure why but they were not allowed to bring them to class in Jr. High. |

And after I posted all that stuff, I did a stupid thing yesterday. Went shopping at Winco. Angela was going to come with me but at the last minute she refused to go. You have to bag your own groceries here so she would usually begin the bagging process then I would help her after I'd paid. But since I was on my own, I decided to go bag some things up while the cashier continued to ring stuff up. After I filled two bags, I went back near the register where I was horrified to see that I had laid my wallet there where one would write checks. Eek! I did the very thing that I accused others of doing and yet I wasn't even aware that I had done it. |

Probably in the same drawer as the tweezers and nail clippers. > Band Aid is in the glove box of the car. > They are not useless to me! When you have a kid, you need such things. Heck, even I need such things. Okay, I never or rarely use Bandaids myself. I am prone to psoriasis which is why I don't. They cause flares for me. But psoriasis is one reason I need those ointments and creams. Hives that come seemingly out of nowhere is another. I also have eye problems where I need to use drops. I don't use nail clippers on my nails either. I have a file for that. I keep one in my purse and another in the van. But they have come in handy countless times when I had some sort of package that was supposed to be easy to open but then wasn't. Little kids often get tiny things stuck in weird places and tweezers are great for that. I also used them in lieu of pliers to fix part of one purse I had that would frequently come undone. And they can be used to repair jewelry on the fly. > My pockets have some money, keys, handkerchief and wallet. Most women's clothes do not have pockets. At least mine don't. And even if they did, I wouldn't put stuff in there. |

But on occasion, I won't be able to get to one. They are all at least 6-7 miles from where I live and unless I just happen to be by one, I won't go there just for gas. So on the odd occasion where I just need some gas to get me by, I pay no mind to the cost with the exception of one place that manages to get away with charging vastly more than the other stations. Their gas has been as much as 20 cents more per gallon. Only thing I can figure is that they are right before the freeway entrance so perhaps they catch people on their way to Canada who realize that the need gas. I rarely fill my tank anywhere but Costco. But I might put in $5-10 worth just to get me by. |

I was actually shocked to see one today that did. Just one stall but it was there! When I was a kid, they were called service stations. These days there is no service except for perhaps ringing up your sale or putting a few items in a bag because most have stores attached. Unlike the old days where if they sold any food at all, it was a stale bag of peanuts or some Nabs and they might have a soda machine if you were lucky! |

If you wait long enough, you can see the movie in the convenience of your own home for free and you can even eat good popcorn and not have to heft around a beverage that is an accident waiting to happen! I haven't been to the movies in over a year now. But for some reason, my mom really loves going to them and Angela seemed to like them too. The appeal wore off for Angela though once I got her Netflix. We just weren't able to go what with all the stuff that was going on with my dad. We did want to go to some shows (plays and dance shows) but were unable to do those things either. Just too much else going on. I did not miss the movies though! My mom used to insist on going to the first showing because at some (but not all) theaters, the movie was cheaper. The concessions were not cheaper though and because it was earlier in the morning than we would normally even be up on the weekends, we wound up either sneaking some food in or eating popcorn for breakfast. And most of the time I'd wind up just falling asleep in there anyway. So a big waste of money for me! |

Gas station margins are razor thin. I've yet to see a self service petrol (gas) station where I live. All the ones I use have attendants to do it for you. They also wash your windscreen and check your oil and water (if you want them to). I'm quite cool with that - and always give them a tip. Besides - it creates jobs for people who might otherwise be amongst the unemployed and saves me having to get up close and personal with the petrol which stinks and gives me a throbbing headache if I inhale the fumes - Ugh! -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

And I even know some males that suffer from it too. I have a GPS gizmo which I keep either in my handbag or in the glove compartment of my car. If it wasn't for that gizmo I'd probably have ended up in a neighboring country by mistake more than once... When buying a new car here nowadays, most of the 'fancier' models have a GPS 'built in'. If/when I can afford it, I'm getting me one of those thar cars ;-) -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

And even though I took a break from reading/posting to this group, the webmaster email address kept working - and still does. i.e. webmaster(at)recfoodcooking(dot)com - just change the obvious - or click on one the of webmaster links on the site. I've had a few requests sent through to add people to the In Memoriam page (which is how I found out about Boli and a couple of others) - and much to my dismay, I believe Andy (the Breakfast King) seems to have died too... If this is true, I'll have to do something about that as well. Does anybody know for sure? Anyway, I rely on the other subscribers of the group to send in content when they feel the urge to - so if you want anything added to it, e.g. your Mugshot, a Signature Dish of yours, something useful for the Hints 'n Tips page etc., then please drop me a mail and I'll happily put it up. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

I seem to recall a NG called rec.food.recipes, maybe that's the one you're thinking about? Haven't looked at that NG in... years. But the last time I did, there was nothing much happening, just a few spam posts (handbags/shoes for sale, etc.) My guess is that the moderator(s) just gave up on it. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

The way I remember it, people were still interested in the newsgroup but the moderator disappeared, not asking if anyone else wanted to take on the task. Strange. nancy |

I suppose WalMart would be an exception with the self-checkouts. It doesn't affect me since I don't shop there. Jill |
