Is there no way another person could take it on? If not, could someone
create another?

I hadn't done anything like that in years, but I did it with both my
wallet and my car keys (different stores, different days) this week.

I don't think so, but I didn't subscribe so I didn't notice
if there was some resolution. Sure doesn't sound like it.

Seems to me there would be a backup moderator in the event
something happened to the person?

Would the ptb who allow these things to be set up not allow someone else to
take over. Does anyone know how to contact them?

I remember that Om had offered to moderate it before the person who
abandoned it took over - but wasn't accepted due to something about
software.

Unless I'm supposed to be somewhere on time, I enjoy
getting 'lost' ... I just love driving around. You see
stuff you didn't know was there. Unless I'm lost in
the desert or something, I'll find my way back no problem.

And men suffer from "requestdirectionphobia". ;-)

I have a pretty good sense of direction. Maybe it is because I was in
the reserves and had to learn map reading. I spent most of the 28 years
of my career driving around this region and I have a map of it in my
head. I can picture where I am, where I am going and the roads I need
to take there.

My wife is really bad at directions. It was even a challenge to get her
a GPS because he his as technologically challenged as she is
geographically challenged.

When we were driving around Europe I really maps, but since I was
driving I relied on her to read the maps and navigate. Big mistake.
Whenever she told me which way to turn I would immediately ask if she
was sure. More often than not she would correct herself.

Things were worse in the Netherlands. I had accidentally purchased a map
of central Holland, an area about the size of the Niagara peninsula, but
the map was the same size as an Ontario road map, so the scale was much
greater. We were looking for a small town near Arnhem and as we were
crossing a bridge she told me that our exit was about 1 mile from the
river. It turned out to be about 100 yards, so I missed. She said we
would have to go about 10 miles to turn around. It was about 1 mile.

That did happen to me once. When I was travelling with my brothers and
their wives. My SiL was supposed to be navigating and she got us totally
lost. We has been staying in Garmische-Partenkirchen and want to go to
Fussen, which involved slipping down into Austria, west and back north
back into Germany. We made it there okay. On the way back we were
totally messed up. I eventually stopped as a gas station and went in
with the map to ask for directions. When I asked, in very rusty German,
where we were I was surprised at the answer. We were about 50 km from
where I thought we were.

My new car does not have one and I don't really need it. If there is an
occasion for one I can use my wife's. The only problem is that our son
has been using it this week. He is staying with us for a few weeks until
his new apartment becomes available. He has just moved back to this
area. He had moved away when he we went to university and had never
travelled much around her. He is working in a nearby city that can be
challenging enough even to locals.

That's different. Here we just swipe our cards, there's no "reader" to
leave it in. At least none I've ever encountered.

Those are available here but I don't want one!

Cue everyone telling me how wonderful they are and how easy they are to use
.... but I don't care! I don't want one!

After John and I were at an art show in Burnsville, MN, we went over the
same bridge (scary, it was the one that collapsed) at least three times.
I kept telling him, there's the off ramp! It's right there! He kept
driving right past it. Dammit, when I say hang right, hang a right!

No GPS. I'm good at maps and navigating. He's not as good at following
directions.

See, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have anything
special. I just swipe my debit/credit card through a reader, it
registers, I put the card back in my wallet. That's all there is to it,
except sometimes entering my PIN.

My husband wasn't convinced that GPS could be useful, because he'd
read a map and then write the directions on a piece of paper that he
would pull out of his pocket to consult.

I hate driving around cities I've never been in looking for a store.
It's too distracting to be looking for the turn, reading your set of
directions blah, blah, blah... you know how it goes. I was on the
verge of buying a portable GPS for myself that I could throw in the
glove compartment to pull out whenever I needed it when we bought a
new car. Partly due to my incessant harping (and the fact that it was
a killer deal), he had the package with GPS, satellite radio and a
fancy CD player (which was the one item he wanted, but couldn't get
without the other two) installed.

Well, I LOVE my GPS and satellite radio and since our tour of the USA,
he does too. We'd just program the GPS for our destination and got
there without needing to pull over to consult a map. We could also
drive all day long without needing to search for yet another local
channel (that we could agree on) with better reception. Life is good!

It's a fun old series. This episode came out the year I was born.
(1960) I just love old black & white television and old movies.

Yes, it doesn't count as 'lost' unless there's a time factor involved!

N, would you *please* figure out how to quote when you reply? I rarely
know what or who you're replying to. In this case it *might* be related
to purses and shopping carts.

We swipe at the grocery and other retail stores, have readers at the
ATM and gas pump. Looks like our credit card industry may finally
catch up to the rest of the world now that so many large companies
have been breeched.

Seems a lot of people here are like me, unlike me they are not given a

Stupid things can happen when you are doing things on the fly. Back in
September we drove up to visit with our son who was on an 18 week
training course for his job. We had planned to go most of the way and
then stop for the night in a town along the way and do some sightseeing.
We got tangled up in detour traffic resulting from a major truck
accident.... three hours worth. We decided to go little further. When we
got to the city at which we had to go north we started looking for a
hotel and when we had no luck we got out the GPS. It directed us to a
Comfort Inn that would suit our purposes.... nothing special but a
reliable place to spend the night without spending a fortune.

It turned out to be further than we had expected.... about 15 minutes
east from that city. If we had instead gone 15 minutes north we would
have been at the final destination and could have stayed in a hotel.

The joys of travel delays and frustration.

Now I am thinking you think people are talking about those cards you
just wave over the reader.

When people say they swipe their card, it is through a reader. The
kind of reader that doesn't require your card to leave your hand,
therefore you won't forget it in the machine.

I like Comfort Inn. We quickly discovered (on our travel the USA
trip) that the hotels we liked best were Comfort Inns. The beds and
pillows are perfect for me, it's always well maintained and clean and
they have laundry facilities for their guests to use - so we joined
their Choice rewards program and ended up with several free nights.

In fact we just used up almost all of our leftover points on a
pleasant mini-vacation in Caramel. I would have never chosen that
hotel if we hadn't been using up points because it was a couple of
miles outside of Carmel proper, but the hotel turned out to be filled
with international guests, had a very attentive staff and they served
the best "included" breakfast I've ever eaten outside of a B&B. It
made a good impression on me, so I figured it was a great way to
introduce international travelers to American style breakfast foods.

Uh, no. I swipe it through the reader. It asks for my PIN if I select
