Dataw Island Club Lunch Specials

Tuna Salad
Served in a Pita Pocket with
Lettuce and Tomato
Choice of Side
$8.00

Egg Salad Sandwich
On Croissant with Bacon and Tomato
Choice of Side
$8.00

Blue Plate Special
Curry Lamb Stew
Served Over Rice Pilaf
$10.00

Hmmm, none of that appeals. And that's still not a Blue Plate Special.

They seem to have moved on to pita pockets and "wraps", although the
croissant is a fairly new twist.

For what she's paying per year for this food, these menus are pretty lame. Tuna salad? Egg salad? Really?

Quite so. There is a spiel about 'The Club' dining room on the Dataw
website; apparently:

<quote> the culinary staff does not take their role lightly. The team is
regarded as one of the best in the area and they prove that night after
night with each meal they serve. </quote>

http://www.dataw.org/Default.aspx?p=...28 1522&vnf=1

Guess they have to pay big salaries for the 'best' culinary staff - so
they hike up the prices of the (boring) food accordingly <laugh>

I could see serving those things for lunch. But not for those prices!

Hopefully they are more "gourmet" versions, rather than plain old tuna
or egg salad. Keep in mind too that you are not only paying for the
food but also "renting" some real estate while you are dining there.
That's a very nice looking clubhouse/restaurant there. In reality,
take-out prices should be priced a bit less, imo.

Those prices are only a little higher than what I'd pay for a similar
lunch at a decent restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A lunch counter
would probably be cheaper. Of course, I wouldn't order egg salad
or tuna salad in a restaurant; I'd make them at home.

Tuna salad at Zingerman's deli is $4.50 for a small, $8.50 for a large,
and that's just the sandwich. No table service, no side dish. Of
course, they're renowned for huge, expensive (and delicious) sandwiches.

Of course there are regular menus for each of the dining rooms. All
items priced considerably higher, naturally.

As for the staff not taking their roles lightly, *maybe* not the kitchen
staff. The servers? Ha! Remember when I ordered fish & chips to go?
Got home, opened the takeout container to eat my dinner... I had fish
but no chips! I called to complain and the person who answered the
phone seemed to think it was funny. I was not amused.

I have seen pictures of the place. It looks really nice so I would
expect to pay a little more. I would also expect their specials to be
something better than tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches.

Hmmm, "gourmet" egg salad? Interesting concept. I used to work with
a woman in I.T. (information technology, for those technically
challenged) whose real goal was to become a pastry chef. (She
eventually did quit the computer gig to work in a restaurant). She
thought putting grapes and chopped walnuts in chicken salad made it much
more fru-fru. Hoity-toity. Whatever. Some might agree. Me, I thought
it was overkill. YMMV.

Peacock eggs? The only thing that would make it in anyway gourmet would
be a dash of herb of spice, perhaps freshly made mayo.

I don't remember that one (must have happened before I 'returned') - but
from some of the other goings on there you've posted about, it doesn't
surprise me in the least.

I have put capers in egg salad. And chicken salad with fruit and nuts is
really common. I don't generally like fruit in things like that but back
when I could eat chicken salad, I would put walnuts in it.

Right! It's a beautiful place, but that food, what a rip!
