I used to wonder what all those people were doing, poking at their phones and showing them while smiling and laughing to the person sitting next to them. And now that I have a smart phone, I still do. I still take a book with me if I have to wait somewhere. Yes, the smart phone is useful to me but I don't find it amusing. And unless I am expecting something, I'd rather wait until I get home to check my email. |

That's too bad. I am not close to my extended family, mainly because I didn't grow up with them and we don't know each other well. I do now have two cousins who live in this state but not nearby. One came to my parent's house and I think that was the second time in my life that I had ever seen him. I see the other one perhaps once a year to every other year. |

I don't *need* to give up Facebook. I happen to like it! I use it almost daily. The allure for me is that I can talk to several people at once. Either by making a post and replying to the responses or by starting a chat. I have two friends who I gave up on trying to call because they were never home when I did. And I generally won't call people past 10:00 p.m. unless I know they will be up and it won't wake other members of the family. But... I can talk to them both after 10:00 p.m. and the sound of our typing isn't annoying to the other family members as a late night phone call could be. As for Pinerest, what I can comprehend is that you are using it for something other than its intended purpose. Fine. I don't care. I only thought you might be interested in the hacks because people have been losing their pins. But you obviously don't so... *shrugs* |

I prefer to save stuff to *my* computer now and back it up with Carbonite. I lost a recipe that I really wanted because I had it saved on a website and then the website suddenly went away. That was my wakeup call. Have never found the recipe since. Was an egg free ravioli. |

The schools in this district went bookless a few years ago and everything is online. They do keep some books for hardship cases that have no access at all to a computer at home. Computers are available in the libraries but we don't have good bus service here so that's not always an option either. I guess the books were just getting too expensive and they seem to come out with new ones every few years. They would only have to pay once for the online book. Then the students are all given the log in code. Homework is often turned in online too at a website called turnitin.com. That way they can require stuff to be turned in on the weekends. |

We are one of the 'lucky' ones who have internet access/cell phone coverage at home - which can still be somewhat 'iffy' because living 'out of town' ourselves we have to rely on radio links and the such like for internet connectivity. Heh, sometimes I have to go out into the back yard to get a decent signal on my cell phone.) It would be very convenient if we could have 'bookless' schools; text books cost a bl**dy fortune here too (not to mention the exercise books and pens, pencils etc.) My daughter does have a netbook (which we bought her a couple of years ago) and of course a fancy smart phone too ;-) -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

It said that it may send them a response. Huh? Are you sure you use Facebook? It said and I quote: When you *comment on a post*, you can link to someone in your response by following the same steps as above. IOW it's a thread and you are replying to a post, probably to someone upstream. FB doesn't do subthreads, it's just one long conversation. If you comment on a friend's post, there are often many people involved that you don't know because they are your friend's friends. Maybe you are replying directly to a comment upstream. How will that person know you're replying to him/her if you don't tag them? Maybe you've unsubscribed from notifications of new comments on the thread - which I do when they are long and active with lots of participants I don't know and I'm tired of the subject. How are you going to know someone has replied to one of your comments without being tagged? Like I said, FB gives you the notification and then it's up to you to read and reply. > If I want to send someone a message, I just send it! How are you going to email them if you aren't on their FB friends list? My settings are for friends only and I don't want to "friend" some stranger just so they can send me a private email. Ain't gonna happen. -- Good Food. Good Friends. Good Memories. |

I have no idea what upstream means. I don't know what subthreads means. I have never tagged anyone and AFIAK nobody has ever tagged me. Mostly when I talk to people on FB I chat with them. If I want to comment on a post, I just comment. I don't know about subscribing or unsubscribing from notifications. AFAIK whenever there is a reply to a comment I have made, whever someone else has commented on it, I get that little pinging noise so long as I am online. Whatever you are doing, you are making things complicated in my mind. You and I obviously don't use FB in the same way. And whatever you are doing is not something I'd want to do. Seems to me that you are wanting it to be more like a forum and it's not. My memory isn't all that bad. If I comment on a post and I really want to go back and see responses, I'll just go look at that post. That isn't hard to do. I hate being notified of things. > >> If I want to send someone a message, I just send it! > > How are you going to email them if you aren't on their FB friends > list? My settings are for friends only and I don't want to "friend" > some stranger just so they can send me a private email. Ain't gonna > happen. You don't email them! You send them a message via FB. You tell me that *I* don't know how to use it but it sounds like *you* don't know how to use it. You don't post to their wall. You just send a message. That way only *they* see it. That's why the message button is on there. *Walks away shaking head* |

As far as I know, they've never contacted anybody in my address book. It's a good thing too cause then I'd have to send out apology emails to these people. Not good because it's a loss of face and I don't like losing face. LinkedIn does not have my permission to use my address book. OTOH, Facebook and Google + have my address book because it wouldn't make sense not to. Spoof email is pretty common these days and easy to ignore but if it's from somebody you know, you should let them know about it. That's what I do. Hopefully, they'll return the favor. |
