Default Dataw Island Valentine's Dinner 2014

"Dataw Island Club will be hosting Valentine's Dinner in The Pub, as we
did in 2013, for couples and small groups.

To make Reservations for this event, please call" (snipped)
"no walk-in service will be available this evening."

God forbid you should be single and want to eat out on Valentine's Day!

Here's the menu. Sorry, they sent it in a .gif format again.

Is this posted here because you are trying to drum up business for them?

Or just to show us what a rip their pretentious fare is?

It might be good for her mental health to lay off this stuff for a month or
two and find other things in life. Just sayin'.

You don't seem to care much about your own mental health, so why do you
pretend to be concerned about hers?

I suppose I'm in the same boat - no life. 8-)
I enjoy menus as inspiration and history; I periodically browse/search the
online menu collection of the New York Public Library. If not for that
source, I'd not know that, in the early 1900s, several railroads offered
jelly omelets in their dining cars, as did a number of hotels.

I think it is somewhat comical that this place, which appears to nice
venue, makes such a lame attempt to provide foods befitting the setting.
It is mostly greasy spoon food at inflated prices. I sympathize with
Jill being required to spend her yearly assessment on the sort of crap
they offer.

Of course I could kill file, now that she is better at including Dataw in
the subject line. But if you had a friend in person who was constantly
bitching about something like this, wouldn't you tell her to get over it?
Think about it - would you and your friends really keep inviting her along
on your lunch outings if she was certain to moan and groan about the same
damn thing over and over (Dataw, bad spouse, ungrateful kids, Richard
Nixon - it doesn't matter the subject)? Or would you politely tell her she
is doing herself no favors? Or maybe you would egg her on and watch the
downward spiral - is that what you would do?

You could go with your friend and if they complain you could always sniff
and say 'It is legal nowadays you know!'
Not sure about your reputation after that though <g> OR you could go with a
small group?

LOL! We could split the cost, sure.

> Not sure about your reputation after that though <g>

As you've probably surmised, I don't much care about my "reputation".
I remember my mom telling me (years before I moved here) there were
<whispered> "*** guys" living up the street. LOL

> OR you could go with a small group?
>

I don't know what constitutes a small group. Four people? Most of the
people I know aren't even in town. For some silly reason they go back
to the North in the winter.

I really don't want to get sucked into a "group". They've tried!

I have very little in common with most of the people I've met here.
Most don't like to cook. Lots like gardening. That's not me. If you
say you like to read they press you to join a "book club". No, sorry.
No one is going to assign me a book to read and then schedule a time to
meet and discuss. That's not fun, it's high school literature class in
someone's living room.

I'll just cook for myself, save $60. I'll find another way to spend
it another day, sans the restrictions.

Seems to me they won't turn business away so long as one person isn't
clogging up a table that could be used for a few people But, if they don't
have many bookings ...

No, I am not a fan of groups either.

I bet you enjoy it better too The rare time I can be persuaded to go out
to eat I am always disappointed ... BUT remember those costs you pay
anyway!!

I'll offer you something from Steve's Pantry:

Dirsek:
A preserved vegetable used when fresh is unavailable or for trail
rations. Often made from turnips, beets, carrots, or parsnips.

Ah, thanks for that.
Tell them it's Coquille Saint-Jacques and they should at least tell
how they prepare it.
I also like the "lightly dusted with [...] peppercorns" ....
Lightly dusted with pepper, OK. Lightly sprinkled with peppercorns, OK.

Cheers,

I'd call it "delusions of grandeur" ...
That's why I find Jills reports of that overpriced restaurant so
entertaining.

No argument there, all the more so given they seem to be little more
than a glorified cafeteria for seniors...

And what's wrong with that ?
It's about cooking.

Contrary to All-Merkin topics like :

Or the histrionics of some of the posters here.
Or the endless ramblings of some bovine posters ...

I will, Michael. Not all of the menus are interesting. This one
struck me as funny. They usually make silly mistakes in their attempts
to make things sound like haute cuisine.

I wonder if the wait staff are as dull at the "chef". Ask then "What is
the soupe du jour?" and they answer "soup of the day".

You may laugh, but:

To make extra money, Dale and Whyman break up the large icebergs and
harvest the smaller pieces, selling these "bergy bits" to water bottling
plants.

They need a French spellcheck. Maybe you can volunteer to eye-ball their menus?

As to wanting to eat there solo on Valentine's Day, I can imagine pleasanter prospects.

How are you doing on eating up that assessment so far for 2014?

I'd venture a guess and say she hasn't spent her monthly allotment in
the dining room yet... which means either she's going to do more take
out than usual or she's going to give up her money with nothing in
return at the end of this year too. I'm rooting for her, but she
needs to start strong if she wants to get her money's worth out of
"the Club" this year.
