Dataw Island Lunch Specials 2/18/2014

Grilled Ham and Cheese
Served on Wheat
Choice of Side
$7.50

Crab Cake Sandwich
With Tartar Sauce, Lettuce and
Tomato on a Soft Bun
Choice of Side
$9.75

Blue Plate Special
Pear and Blue Cheese Salad
Served with Grilled Chicken
$9.50

As far as the Club goes, I've pretty much decided, except for an
occasional meal here and there... I'll just buy a small wine rack.

Something very simple, similar to this:

tiny:

Buying a bottle of wine or two each month, it wouldn't take much to use
up that assessment. I'd be stashing away wine to cook with. :)

Yep:) And if you advertise your wine cellar, imagine all the visitors you

I don't get the association between club meals and a Kohls wine
rack... I'm sure you can buy all those wines for less than half the
Club price at a local package store... yeah, like you'll be stashing
away all that wine for cooking. hehe

Did they happen to mention what 'choice of side' was on offer (and if
said 'side' might have contained truffles or caviar - or some such)?

I ask this because my two children made 9 grilled ham, cheese *and* tomato
sandwiches today for the family (all of which were served on wheat bread)
- and the ingredients cost USD7.28

The only association is I'd be buying wine towards the assessment and
would need a way to store it.

The Kohl's wine rack was merely an example I found online. I've never
shopped at Khol's. It wasn't an endorsement. That one looked rather
sturdy.

>I'm sure you can buy all those wines for less than half the

Package store? Wow. Sorry, no package stores around here.

Yes, I could buy the wine for less. But then I'd still owe the Club
money for the dining assessment. You really don't grasp this, do you?

>yeah, like you'll be stashing away all that wine for cooking. hehe

Hehe yourself. I like to cook with wine. The idea of having wine
stashed on a rack which also helps me meet the dining assessment is a
good thing.

Exactly, and let's face it, if you don't spend that assessment on something,
it is money lost to you! At least this way you are seeing something for it.

LOL No truffles or caviar.

Sandwiches are usually served with russet or sweet potato "french
fries". The problem is, their "fries" are awful.

Hmmm be interesting to know just how expensive. If you could afford it, it
is a nice piece of furniture and you can get plenty in it.

That particular one is table height (they call a mini-bar). I only
posted it for illustration purposes to show how one could be
transformed into a useful piece of furniture. There are inexpensive
wine racks all over the internet. IKEA has one that holds 9 bottles
for $10. Put two of those together with a slab of wood or "something"
on top and there ya go.

Except if you are storing wine, putting it in your living space is the LAST
thing you'd want to do. Wine should be stored in stable temperature and cool
conditions at around 14C.

You won't find any one level X's without making them yourself, but
what you could do (or have made) is cut dowels to the correct height
and glue them mid-shelf. You'd only need one smallish dowel, do the
math. Better a little more space between wine bottles than less.

That sounds perfect!!! It will look really good too:) I have this thing
"Use what you got" and will always try to do that before I buy new! You
know that bookcase fits, you have a space for it ... what more could you
want:) I am sure you will be able to get the racks to fit. They come in
all shapes and sizes. Good luck:)) (btw I don't do gewgaws either ;-)

Why does that not surprise me? <g>

But talking about fries - I'm fairly sure (our local) McDonald's potato
fries must be preserved/processed with formaldehyde - or something really
close...

I came to this conclusion because my son sometimes goes to one of the McDs
outlets here and buys a burger and fries for lunch... And one time - when
he was doing his weekly cleaning out of his car - he found a half a packet
of fries he didn't finish under his seat (guess it slipped down there
somehow and must have been there for at least three or four days...)

Anyway, he came to show these fries to me (shaking his head in amazement)
because there was no mold and/or other 'furry' stuff growing on them; in
fact they didn't look (or smell) any different from when one buys them
'fresh'. I guess I'm a sucker for punishment, because I still buy and eat
them sometimes myself. ;-)

A 12 bottle wine cooler costs only a few dollars more than that
fercocktah 12 bottle rack from Kohls:
http://www.amazon.com/AVANTI-12-BOTT...ds=wine+cooler

And a 36 bottle wine cooler is not very expensive:
http://www.amazon.com/Danby-Bottle-F...ds=wine+cooler

And were I serious about a wine cooler for cheap I'd check out a local
used appliance dealer, you can probably find a 12 cu ft used bare
bones fridge for under a $100... any fridge can be set at wine cooler
temperature. I've bought lots of appliances at the used appliance
store, never had a problem and saved a lot of dollars... why spend a
$1,000+ for a brand new stove/refrigerator-freezer for a tenent when a
used one at $100 works perfectly... often they work better than new
because they are totally top to bottom reconditioned. My 2nd
fridge-freezer that's in my basement is 17 cu ft, it's bare bones with
wire shelves, no ice maker but works perfectly and has been working
perfectly for the more than ten years I've had it... was delivered
with a 1 year warranty on the compressor, for $100.
http://www.lounsburyappliance.com/
Most small appliance stores also sell used, they recondition the ones
they remove. On Lung Guyland there were several dealers who only sold
used.

Of course I know that Jill doesn't need a wine cooler, she drinks her
vino in the rocks. hehe

(snippety)

I've bought used appliances in the past. Washers & dryers. They worked
just fine. But I don't want an old refrigerator in my living room.

I like their fries, but I stopped order their milkshakes the day I
didn't finish one and a few hours later (sitting at room temperature)
it looked exactly the same.

You're not buying collectible wines and they won't be stored for
decades, so buy them and drink them. Modern wines at the $30 and
below level (I'm guessing Dataw marks up their wine 3-4 times, which
means your $60 bottle is $20 or under at the retail level) are
formulated to "drink now"... so do it with impunity.

I hear they make them with real dairy these days, but you know how
hard it is to convince consumers things are different. I'm living
proof that once you've lost business, it's hard to get it back. The
only drinks I order at McDonald's are tap water and coffee.

The cross pieces may be available, but you can often just get away with
vertical separators and stack the bottles on on top of the other. Of
course, you will still need them cut to size. Any way you can get wood
cut to length to make partitions?

I use an old entertainment center that used to be my son's when he was a
teenager. I just added some home made partitions and it works for me,
but is not visible to others so appearance is not a factor. I also
bought a 36 bottle cooler when Hope Depot had them for $79 a few years
back.

That can work, but some of us like to have a selection on hand. I keep
about 100 bottles at any time and usually buy by the case to save $$$.
I also buyh from a particular winery a couple of times a year. I've I'm
going to make a 100 mile round trip, I want to make it worth while with
both a lunch or dinner on the waterfront as well as the winery trip.

So true. I ate at McDonalds a few times when I was working on the road
and realized risk of eating that food without a toilet nearby. I
quickly learned to avoid them. It wasn't always possible because
sometimes I was with other guys and it was the only place nearby that
most wanted to go to.

I keep hearing from people that McDonald's coffee is good these days. I
remember it being really bad. My riding teacher used to come in with
McD's coffee and said how good it was. I quit riding lessons more than 4
years ago and I still haven't gone there to try it.

Once bitten twice shy.

It may vary by region, but around here in CT they server Newman's Own, a
pretty good bean. I don't drink coffee often, but this is pretty good.
When my wife has to go for a blood test every couple of weeks we go to
McD for breakfast after.

LOL I didn't say I was planning to buy one! Cute old video. :) Yes, I
know you can have appliances painted. Some 20 years ago I had a
