The title (since ziti is used), but most important...that's an outrageous
price for that meal.

It calls for ****ghetti and then switches to ziti. duh
You can do that dish at home for two for like $10, even include a
glass of dago red.

1 lb box pasta - $1.25
Jarred sauce - $1
6 meat-a-balles - $3
Garlic bread - $2
Dago red, 2 glasses, $1.50
Tip - $1.25

Could be mixed pasta. They actually did that where my dad was staying!
Used up all the dregs. Macaroni mixed with farfalle and spaghetti. All
have different cook times so I'm sure that was rather unpleasant and hard to
eat!

It would be interesting to see what they are serving your mother. It
could spur people who have loved ones in rest homes to become aware of
what their loved ones are being fed (in accordance with doctor's
orders) and to ask better questions about how it is prepared.

I dunno. I guess one could say that they always take the cheap-O route. Italian food is gross and cheap.

Do you *know* what they're serving your mom every day?

Those who don't like these posts don't have to read them.

I'm making spaghetti & meatballs for dinner tonight, if that helps. It
won't cost $17 and it won't be served on ziti.

You can hold the pasta, I'll have my meat-a-balles with peppers, parm
style (lotsa melty mozz), on a toasted kiaser roll. Actually that's
typical here when passing Pauls on the way home, take out one with
meat-a-balles, one with saw-seege, half of each each. Hmm, web site
is down but they do have darn good 'talian vittles:

The menu at the Olive Garden and the typical pizza/pasta house is
crappy... but real Italian food is superb... mostly good seafood, veal
dishes, wonderful salamis, hams, roast beef, even bologna (Mortadella
is the king of cold cuts), and Italian deserts are fabulous,
especially from a real dago bakery, canolis to die for, wonderful
liquor drenched pastries, cookies, cakes, and the best breads on the
planet.

TARTOFFU

Tartoffu is a dome-shaped Italian ice cream confection, generally
served as a dessert but can be eaten alone as a snack, usually served
with demi-tasse. Tartoffu can be prepared in various sized portions;
for single serving, for six, eight, as many as you'd like.

Here we go...

Choose an appropriate sized [round-bottomed] glass bowl, one large or
several small bowls. Line bowls with plastic wrap leaving extra
lapping over the rim. Place lined bowl(s) in fridge.

Next melt bittersweet chocolate, how much depending upon bowl size(s)
- you can never have too much chocolate - actually how much will
become apparent shortly.

Coat inside of cold lined bowl(s) with melted chocolate. A fairly
thick coat is required, approximately 1/8" thick - you may need to
apply 2-3 coats chilling bowl(s) in freezer between coats.

Chocolate bowl(s) will be filled with ice cream, so begin preparing
ice cream filling ahead.

Here is the traditional ice cream recipe; prepare a quantity which
will suffice. Again, the method whereby this recipe is used for
Tartoffu will become apparent

Spumoni©

I think it would be very hard to find a spumoni mold nowadays, so
instead, use a large 3/4-quart jello mold.

First Mixtu

2 cups milk
3/4 cups sugar
5 egg yolks
1/2 tsp vanilla (or you can use any flavoring you wish)

Combine milk, sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla in a saucepan and cook
over very low heat, stirring constantly until mixture is thick. Cool,
then place in a metal bowl and freeze until mixture is medium hard,
about two hours. Mixture should be soft enough to be spooned out
easily.

Second Mixtu

1 cup heavy cream beaten stiff
1/4 cup sugar
9 maraschino cherries, cut into small pieces
1 tbsp. candied orange peel cut fine
2 tbsp blanched slivered almonds

Gently mix all of the ingredients together, and chill in refrigerator.
Chill your mold well. When first mixture is ready, line the inside of
the mold with it, leaving a hole big enough for the second mixture in
the center. Fill hole with second mixture, and cover with wax paper,
or plastic wrap and freeze for two hours. Dip in warm water quickly to
unmold. Cut into portions of 6 to 8
------

Now fill your chocolate lined bowl(s) with ice cream, leaving 1/4"
space at top. Place filled bowl(s) into freezer to set up, about 1
hour. Meanwhile re-heat or melt more chocolate. Then fill the 1/4"
space with a thick coating of chocolate - this will become the
Tartoffu bottom. Cover Tartoffu(s) with plastic wrap and place back
into freezer until ready to serve.

To serve remove from freezer and peel back plastic wrap. Invert
Tartoffu(s) onto appropriate serving plate(s) and unmold gently and
peel off remaining plastic wrap.
Place one half a glacè cherry on top of each Tartoffu - Mangia!

Ha! I was going to make spaghetti & meatballs for dinner last night.
Then I got invited to the Club. Same dinner specials as the night
before. The DRM (dining room manager) set the sheet with the specials
in front of me and I started laughing. When I pointed out spaghetti
isn't ziti, he exclaimed "OH! I did not notice that!" He hastily took
it away and a minute later I noticed he had gathered up all the sheets
with the dinner specials and headed off to the kitchen. A few minutes
later a guy wearing chefs whites (not Chef Penn, who so far has been
invisible) walked by and said, "I'm not the one who wrote that!" LOL I
didn't bother to ask which is it, spaghetti or ziti. I ordered a burger
and a cup of crab bisque. The burger was fine. The crab bisque was superb!

Ziti pasta is redundant, and the price is outrageous.

Actually the world's finest cooks are illiterate. It's completely
unnecessary to have the ability to read to cook... one doesn't need
the ability to read to be a concert pianist, Michael Angelo most
likely couldn't read, didn't need to for painting the 'cistern'
chapel. Most fine cooks aren't formally educated. Many of the tool
and diemakers I worked with couldn't read, they couldn't sign their
name, all they needed to know was how to do math. That's why many
people with no formal education gravitate to highly technical
occupations, so long as they are good with numbers they don't need to
know how to read. Don't need to know how to read to build a house,
just decipher the drawings and know numbers.

That's Michelangelo, and the Sistine Chapel.

He was also an architect, engineer, acclaimed poet, prodigious writer..
evidently far more literate (and cultured) than yourself.

WTF do you think I added 'those'... you very obviously possess an
extrodinarilly low IQ, a humongous volume of bitterness, and
absolutely no sense of humor... it sucks to be you. And to date
you've contributed nothing on topic to rfc... you're just a common
shit stirrer.

The price. That's the reason I don't go out for Italian food. It is easy
enough to make at home and costs a fraction of that price.

It took you a long time to come up with that, Dave!

My bad. I had changed my sorting for another thread and ended up with
Jill's unread post next on the list. But I stand by what I said.
different shapes of pasta, a variation of a tomato sauce and a small
amount of meat, minimal labour.... jack up the price because people like
Italian food and restaurants can jack up the prices and make a
substantial profit because they can sell it a little cheaper than the
meals that require more work and more expensive ingredients.

I'm sorry - did you miss the other 1500 times the concept of a restaurant has been explained to you? Wages, overhead, staff insurance, professional insurance and on and on. You're ****ing stupid, aren't you?

It's not a restaurant. It's a Country Club. And a very nice one at that. Those places don't get built and maintained on the cheap. And they're not for money-pinching old queens like Sheldon. I'm not at all put off by the prices. I am put off by the variable quality Jill has experienced. And of course the menus have questionable combinations and horrible usage mistakes. Their prices do lead to an expectation of quality and it doesn't sound like they live up to that.

Turning ****gets into zitz is what's wrong.
I've ordered pasta out... everytime I've been to Little Italy I've
ordered spaghetti with scungilli.

Only a little over a year late. I'd quite forgotten about this
thread. Spaghetti and ziti are both pasta, but I wouldn't call
meatballs served over ziti "spaghetti and meatballs". And yes, they
seem to have some standard templates. That often causes some comical
screw-ups because no one seems to proof read them. Ain't life grand?
