Default King Cake

We're about to decorate our Gambino's king cake - $5.99 at Kroger. It
came with containers of white icing, green sugar, purple sugar, and
yellow sugar.

It looks identical to the one below, which is $49.00 with shipping for
the cake and a few souvenirs.

I wish I were in New Orleans, but I'm not! Lets all have a wonderful
Mardi Gras, wherever we are!

I considered ordering one this year, but $50 is a lot of money
for something like that.

I hope your cake is wonderful!

For $5.99, I'd buy the "cake" and ignore the frosting. I wonder what
it's called the rest of the year?

BTW: I had all the ingredients out and warmed up to make ricotta lemon
pound cake, when hubby asked what I was making. He was decidedly
uninterested in a cake and requested lemon bars, so lemon bars it was.
I combined a couple of recipes, doubled the amount of lemon juice,
added an extra egg and it was almost perfect. Next time, I will use
just 1T of cornstarch instead of 2. Still haven't figured out why I
need to use it at all, because I make cheesecake without adding any
flour or cornstarch to the filling and it's fine.

King Cake is something that always leaves me scratching my head.
What's so wonderful about it? It's extremely ugly, so it has to taste
great.

I love king crab legs. They are way too expensive. There are lots of
things I like that are a lot cheaper.

It's basically a cinnamon roll cake- I just made 6 of them. Yes, ugly but delicious!

Thanks - I found a Taste of Home recipe that had a poppy seed filling,
but it definitely was not the norm. I saved that recipe - so I'll
call it something else if I ever make it.

Those cakes have the most horrible combination of colors imaginable. The good news is that you can spot a king cake a mile away. Have a good one!

My understanding is that they're the only cakes that can be seen from the International Space Station with the naked eye.
