Default Dinner Tonight 3/12/2014 will be

Pork loin chops
boiled new potatoes
steamed Fordhook lima beans

I haven't decided yet but I'll probably just bake the chops. Seasoned
with a little S&P, a good sprinkling of Penzey's adobo seasoning.

You?

I roasted a rack of pork loin, with roast potatoes, carrots and cabbage!

I thought I was going to cook a pork butt in the oven and pull it, but
hubby told me DD was cooking tonight - so I don't know now.

That's my favorite dinner - one that somebody else cooks. Unfortunately, nobody around here cooks. OTOH, I suspect that one day I'll get my wish and have my meals cooked for me and spoon fed to me. That's going to be a real drag. You have to be careful about what you wish for.

Ah... Penzey's adobo seasoning on pork is my favorite.

It's cold and rainy and about to become snow and I feel kind of lazy
so dinner will be a frozen pepperoni pizza.

I prefer pork chops grilled on the gas BBQ or done in the cast iron
grill pan. All they need is salt and pepper.

Dinner for us tonight is cheese tortellini. It is one of the few
prepared foods I buy. I made the sauce but used a jar of tomato sauce
and half a can of tomato paste.

Cold and rainy? You are almost directly east of me. If you missed the
snow you can consider yourself lucky. I am looking out the window at
snow that is going sideways instead of down. The snow around my cars is
up to my knees.

To each their own. I don't own a "grill pan" and I don't really want
grilled or fried pork chops.

I occasionally buy some tortellini. I haven't done that in a while.

I won't make you justify your attitude about grilled pork chops. I
certainly had my share of badly fried chops over the years, but when
they are done right they are really good.

They are tasty. There isn't much chance that I would ever make them by hand.

No attitude intended. All I really meant is I didn't want grilled pork
chops *tonight*. I've certainly grilled them in the past. It's windy
and rainy. I don't own a grill pan. Doesn't matter, I'm not the type
grill outdoors in any and every kind of weather.

I wouldn't make them by hand, either. I do like the "fresh" cheese
tortellini they sell in the refrigerator case. Nice when tossed with a
warm basil pesto. The problem with a good garlic/basil pesto is pine
nuts are so friggin expensive.

It turned out to be hubby's wishful thinking. We had pulled pork,
coleslaw and baked beans - followed by a slice of Zanze's cheesecake.
It's like eating a cloud... think of a classic New York cheesecake.
This is the polar opposite.

This evening it will be pasta with sauce left over from the other day. Not
sure if we will get out today for beans. DH has hurt his back and I don't
like to leave him. Still it might clear up by this afternoon.

My husband strains his back easily too. Has the Dr. given him any
exercises to do to prevent it and/or help with the pain after he does
it (yet again for the umptheenth time)?

I either know my limits or have good back habits, not sure which - but
I rarely have any back pain at all and what little I get is easily
babied away.

Well, it's not a regular thing for him. He must have done something to
strain it. He has been doing heavy stuff around the house though (renewing
stuff) so maybe he did it then.

You're in luck! Ham and black eyed peas go together very well. I do
need to warn you that they aren't as "bland" as white beans are. I
happen to love them, but some people don't... so don't swear off beans
if they don't appeal to you.

Yes, again... I can't help you with how long to cook them in your slow
cooker. I'd make the recipe entirely on the stove top or at least get
them started there.

Get started with it early because you can always turn it off if it
cooks in the time allotted and reheat for dinner, but pushing dinner
back can be problematic when you have no idea how long it will take.

Do you think I ought to do it on the stove then? I gave the peas 3 washes
and now they are soaking. I got a big piece of smoked gammon out of the
freezer and it is now defrosting. heh i've even taken pics <g> If you think
I should do it on the stove and are happy to guide me, I will.

I don't necessarily need it for dinner tomorrow. Will it keep ok in the
fridge once cooked?

I was just talking to a guy that was in a rehab hospital. It was most
depressing. He said people in the place would be face down in their food
in the dining hall and he preferred to eat on his bed. When he tried to
get up and walk to the toilet one night, alarms went off and he was told
that everybody had to do their business in their diapers. I said "holy
smokes!" Yes sir, we ought to be happy with what we have right now.

The thing about eating your own food is that there's no element of
discovery about the cook. Learning new things is something I don't get
much of.

Last night I made teriyaki chicken with brown rice. The brown rice is
something new for me. I've never liked brown rice. That's some faddish
stuff! I cook it in the automatic rice cooker using about 60% more
water. Adding some chicken flavoring to the water makes it not to bad at
all.

That is what it is about for me ... learning about new foods and how to cook
them) You might enjoy trying new things out?

assuming it is muscle related. If it is spine related - Lord help him! Try
aspirin, Celebrex, alcohol.

Yes you are right. First thing he couldn't stand let alone make his way to
the shower. I've been rubbing his back with Ibuprofen gel and he has been
taking Ibuprofen tablets which has eased it a bit so at least he has been
walking with the help of crutches. I gave him a nice glass of whisky this
evening to cheer him up Are you supposed to drink alcohol with those
meds? Who knows but it has put a smile on his face) If he is suffering
badly in the morning, I will have him see the doc. Oh I mentioned the shower
and he will get in before he goes to bed Thanks.

It is not something he usually suffers with but he has been doing some heavy
work during the past few days and I reckon he has overdone it

Thanks but no, I am certain it isn't spine. The pain in localised down the
left side of his back and hip.

If his back is bad it's NOT going to clear up in an afternoon. BTDT.

Long hot showers (several in an evening) or long hot baths. The hot
being just as hot as he can stand. It really does help. My doctor
told me that...very hot wet heat works good for back muscles. Heating
pads (dry heat) not so much.

LOL I might just give him another and tell him it came from you)

All passed on) Yes, I knew they relaxed the muscles too as well as being
pain killers. I think the massage with the gel is helping too.

This problem today with his back is not a regular occurrence, but I am
passing on your advice

Many thanks from us both)

I saw this posted in another group recently, but the doctor also suggested
it for my dh last year. He thinks its helps with his problem, don't know
about your dh, but couldn't hurt to try.
