Default I'm Cooking! Update

We are managing pretty well in the kitchen. I found that I can cut up
veggies while sitting at the table and get some stuff out of the fridge
by wheeling the chair near it and standing on one leg. Figuring out how
to move stuff around as well. DH is helpful in following directions.

Tonight we are having roast beef as I got an eye round at Sam's the
other day. He also likes it cold for sandwiches. Last night we had
Michael Angelo's frozen chicken piccata which is not too salty and very
tasty for a frozen product. It has capers and artichokes. We made a
steamer bag of frozen broccoli as a side dish.

Ortho doc said I don't need surgery but I've got about 5 weeks or so
left with the immobility brace and not standing on my right leg. Then
I'll need more therapy.

Hoping to make chicken soup and matzoh balls for Passover. We will be at
a friend's home so that's all I'm doing, but I'm thinking that with some
help I should be okay.

I've had three therapy sessions and am getting really secure with the
walker, but it's tiring and hurts my hands and left hip which is taking
the brunt of my weight so I use the wheel chair in the house. Need the
walker for the potty, however.

Yesterday we tried the RV and I'm proud to say that I can get in by
sitting on the step. Out with the walker and a little help from DH.
It's a very small unit so I can hold on to lots of stuff to get around.

Cooking in the RV will be mostly microwave and eating out. If the
weather is good DH will send up some burnt offerings to the great god
barbeque and I'll make a salad and nuke some veggies for any nights we
are not at ball games. We have a couple of free days between the
ballgames and the RV club rally (where meals are provided) and one of
them will be spent dining with George and Becca (hooray!) at a local
restaurant.

We still haven't figured out the RV shower, but we will. I can do
"sponge" baths to stay clean but I need to wash my hair. I think the
shower head will reach from the shower to the sink. Being an RV shower
there is an on/off switch on the head. DH is going to measure the shower
to see if the shower chair will fit.

DH is thrilled that we are going to the Yankee games in Houston. He
promised me that before the first game we can go to Kenny and Ziggies to
eat. It's a New York style deli that is better than any I've had
outside the NY Metro area with the exception of a really good place near
San Diego many years ago. I think the other two baseball nights will be
stadium food as well. I could eat hot dogs every night :-) but a check
of the Minute Maid Park web site shows that there is lots to choose
from. I'm not all that familiar with the area around the ball park for
restaurants.

I'm still feeling sorry for myself every once in a while, but I'll tough
it out as best I can.

Thanks again for all your helpful hints and I'm sorry if I sounded kvetchy.

Sounds like you are quite normal. Important thing is, you are getting
things done and getting on with life. Won't be long you'll have
forgotten the down side of it!

Keep at it!

I agree! Kudos to Janet W. for managing things as well as she has.
She's had a lot of trials and tribulations to deal with. She's coping
very well and has a great attitude.

There is always the ol' baby powder in the scalp type of hair 'washing.' I know what you're going thru - can you bend over a sink or even make do with the shower head, if it's hand held?
I once went eleven days without a shampoo and it's pretty horrible. Nurses came running to my screams of delight when I finally could wash over the hospitalroom sink with some help.

Thanks.

I made mashed redskin potatoes tonight. DH had to bring me the spuds,
but I washed them and cut them and boiled them by myself standing on one
foot.

When they were done, he brought me the butter and cream and I mashed and
seasoned.

I amaze myself.

Doh!

I know the injury, well. My mom broke hers and was in phys-rehab home
fer 6 wks, our home being too small fer wheelchair. She was walking
good as new in 10-12 wks. This at age 82. Hang in there and don't
become discouraged.

That's what I will probably wind up doing in the RV. I am amazed at my

Thanks for the encouragement.

Having spent 3 weeks in an extended care hospital in October after 3
weeks in regular hospital, I have absolutely no desire to spend any more
of my life in a hospital, except maybe day surgery to get this fakokta
porta cath out of my chest.

Time to replace the &^%$#@* refrigerator that leaked the water from the
door dispenser. I have always hated that fridge. It's a side by side.

I think she's got the shower thing licked. Her husband got her a shower
chair and there is already a hand-held nozzle.

LOL about the flamingo! Do you know about no-rinse shampoo caps?
Similar to this but you can find them for less:

http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/no-...946583-product

When my mom was bedridden this is the sort of thing she used. Her hair
was longer than I'd ever seen it (shoulder length). You put the cap on,
massage well, then towel dry. No rinsing. Those caps did a remarkable job.

Also, Suave (brand) makes a Dry Shampoo spray. I use it myself from
time to time. It beats the heck out of using cornstarch or baby powder.
Much improved over the old Psssst!(tm) spray shampoo from the 1960's.

I was just thinking about that! Used it back then on hair as long or
longer than yours and it was awful.

The technology has certainly improved. I use the Suave version
occasionally. It doesn't weigh your hair down or make it look like you
sprinkled cornstarch on your head.

This is the one argument we are having. I insist that I wash my hair at
least every other day. I don't want to use products. I want my Dove
shampoo and water. On this I am adamant.

Just a couple of suggestions. Sorry it's not helpful. You're

Painful. I hope you heal quickly and properly.

If you have glazed tile they're not very safe in kitchens, usually
tiles with a matte finish are used... unless you're going to change
the tiles I strongly suggest non-skid mats. I have hardwood floors in
my kitchen and I still have non skid mats in work areas. Lowe's has
nice ones, heavy duty rubber with strong carpeted top surface. Easy
to clean, vacuum indoors, wash outdoors with a garden hose and hang
over a fence in the sun to dry, and they last a very long time... mine
are ten years old and still look like new. When I bought them they
were stacked high at the inside entranceway, in two sizes; 3' X 4' and
3' X 5'... I have both sizes, they have beveled edges, and they do not
slip on the floor. They are very similar to this, may even be the
same brand but with a slightly different surface pattern. They also
allay fatigue from long periods of standing on a hard floor:
http://www.amazon.com/Guardian-EcoGu...ber+floor+mats
Also wear proper footwear.

What on earth are you going to do with 50 pounds of onions?

Thanks. I'm no kid, which is why things are a bit difficult.

Everyday I'm finding new abilities that I didn't know I had or was
afraid to try.

Today we went to the farm market and bought our 50 pounds of Texas 1015
onions. I was very pleased with my walker abilities on uneven ground.

Then we did the supermarket with me in the electric cart, which I am
getting much better at. I didn't even hit anyone today :-)

After that to Walgreens. The pharmacy and vitamin area is all the way
in the store and it was pretty far, but I did it. They had a basket for
the front of the walker so we bought it. We put it on and put my purse
in it. It was too heavy for me to move the walker, so we returned it.
What good is having a basket if I can't lift the front of the walker??

I just made a pot of hard boiled eggs and they are now sitting in the
ice bath. I'm going to sit at the kitchen table later with celery and
onions and cut them up in itty bitty pieces for egg salad, tuna salad
and chicken salad for our trip.

We have an abundance of mushrooms so I will attempt chicken and
mushrooms tonight. Wish me luck.

thanks, I'll go look. Baxter (dog) is getting old and slips easily
(and can't get back up) on the wood and tile floors. My current throw
rugs are wearing out.

Use them. They keep pretty well and are amazing when caramelized. They
went up this year and were $28 for 50 pounds.Last year we paid $24

1015 onions (named for the time the onion sets are planted) are children
of the Bermuda onion that Texas A&M adapted to grow here in the lower
Rio Grande Valley. They are very sweet and juicy but also work well in
cooking.

There are very few dishes or salads and no soups that I make that don't
contain onion.

We also bring them to friends when we are traveling in the RV. George
and Becca will be getting some.

I'm really plain about my hair and don't much get into beauty parlor, hair
dresser and hair stylist - HOWEVER - one of the worst moments of my life was
when I had one shoulder incapacitated and had to have my precious DH assist.
Never again (quote the Raven.) I might as well have gone out in the back
pasture and used the garden hose. Would it be possible to hie thee to an
honest-to-goodness hair dresser? Polly

I've heard from my sister that the porta cath is a pain in the ass. She
will never be able to get rid of hers now. Her cancer metastasized and
is in her bloodstream and lungs, this after a year of being declared
cancer free.

Do the rubber bottoms stain the hardwood at all? That's what I worry
about. Around the house I wear socks with non-skid soles to keep me
from slipping, though it doesn't keep me from tripping over my "dead" foot.

That looks like a good thing to put in an emergency kit. Even if you're
evacuated you'd want to wash your hair. Thanks for the idea.
