Don't want smoke? Don't be so sloppy.

if I wanted to clean an oven by hand, I'd do it - but I DON'T and
that's why I have a self cleaning oven. Bring back exposed elements
if that's the only way to keep the self cleaning feature usable,
otherwise why bother including it? People buy cars with options and
they don't bat an eyelash, so make exposed elements and a usable self
cleaning feature an option too.

My oven is about 9 years old and about as cheap as you can get for self
cleaning. I have no issues with it and have only had to use the self
cleaning function perhaps 3-4 times. I do take precautions not to drip
stuff. I put foil or a pan underneath if I think there will be one. A few
times there have been a few splops. I just wait till it is cool and wipe
those up. If burned on, I throw salt on there. Keeps it from sticking.

Yes, the oven gets super hot and there can be a little bit of a smoky smell
but it's not bad unless you have a big mess in there.
